WUOC Long course. I was pretty happy with the first half of the course. I made only small errors up until the spectator control. If only the course had ended there... I was getting pretty tired and dehydrated at this point. They didn't give much water at the water stops, and I was really starting to feel it. I made a couple of large but recoverable mistakes. Then on the way to 14, I found a Swiss girl who was sitting on the ground crying saying she couldn't move her leg. I stopped to help her for a while, but someone had already gone back to get the ambulance, and she kept telling me that she couldn't move and that she didn't want me to stay with her until help came, so I continued on. This really threw off my concentration, and I spent a lot of the rest of the course thinking I should have stayed with her even though she kept telling me to leave. I didn't have a very good idea of where I was going to 14, but miraculously pushed through a huge swath of green mess to come out right at the control. 15 went well, but things went downhill from there. By the end I was so tired that I found the GO control by listening to the announcer at the finish. I came out into the finish field outside the finish shoot and had to get inside it to get to the GO control. I didn't have enough dexterity to open up the streamers, so I ended up sort of bouncing off of them and falling to the ground. I finally got through and then fell down this steep hill. I punched the control and then started running up the longest finish shoot ever. I had been having trouble breathing for the whole course because of the cold that I was still trying to get over, and my inhaler only lasts for 3 or 4 hours, and I was pretty much at the end of that. I ended up having an asthma attack in the finish shoot, which was not fun at all and collapsed as soon as I crossed the finish line. At this point, it was kind of funny because mostly people were really concerned about me and trying to help me out, but the epunch person, really wanted me to download. She actually came over to me with the download box while I was still on the ground and sort of put the download box over my epunch.

Training at Kuka park. The bugs were pretty bad again even with the copious amount of DEET that I slathered all over myself. I felt much better today and actually got to al of the controls that I planned on going to. I didn't make any large mistakes but my heels were really hurting out there even with tape over them and the bugs were extremely distracting.
Running 10:00 [3]

Run back from number 9, where I decided to stop, to the finish.

Afternoon training at Karsa park. I decided to just do the lower 2/3 of the course. It was mostly ok, although the first control I went to (number 6) was placed incorrectly and no one actually found the ribbon for number 9, so I wasted a lot of time on both of those controls. I also decided not to go all the way to number 11 because it was in a big thicket, which screwed me up for number 12. The bugs were much better, though.

Did the long training at Piigaste park. The orienteering was very difficult with lots of marshes and uncrossable vegetation and thousands of flies and mosquitoes. I was planning on doing the first half and then the last 2 controls, skipping the two legs that took you the entire way across the map, but got completely lost going to number 6. I met up with Rosalind, an Irish girl going to number 5. We were extremely confused and continued to be confused going to number 6. We think we found an unmapped, recently clear-cut field out there because we ended back up at the main road way sooner than we would have had we been at any of the mapped fields. Once we were on the main road, we just decided to run back. Unfortunately I forgot to tape my heels before going out, so now I have blisters.

Luckily the training in the afternoon was a sprint around Polva. I don't think I could have taken pushing through more vegetation and dealing with the copious bugs again. I made a couple of very small errors, but I didn't make any large mistakes until I went from number 8 to number 6 instead of 8 to 9. I guess that's the problem with looking at the numbers upside down. The sprint was a lot of fun and more or less bug-free, which was a big plus.

After 24 hours of travel, I am finally here! I snuck into the hostel last night and freaked out a woman who walked in and didn't expect me to be there. Went for my first training run in Estonia. The forest was very, very thick and completely full of marshes. I was still feeling kind of sick, and there was another course in the afternoon, so I decided to take it easy and not attempt to cross the marsh. This left me with only 4 possible controls. I basically used this as time to get used to the terrain here.

I spent 1.5 hours getting to and from the morning training, but probably only 30 minutes or so of that was running. It was supposedly 2km away from Polva, but I think it was farther than that. I had to run down this random highway with basically no shoulder, which was uncomfortable. I got stared at by people, barked at by dogs, and crowed at by roosters.

Orienteering felt a lot better this afternoon. They drove us to the forest this time, which was a definite improvement. I made more of an effort to avoid the dense vegetation this time, which made my life easier. I also found the flies that Pia warned me about. I will wear bug repellant next time. I was pretty in touch with the map, although I need to start relying more on the contours and less on the trails and vegetation boundaries, since at least the trails are questionably marked.

Strength 15:00 [3]
Strenth training at physical therapy before I leave for Europe!

Monday Jul 21

Strength 15:00 [3]
Strength training at physical therapy: lunges with 16lbs, back extensions with 10lbs, squats without weights this time but on a round thing that's hard to balance on, knee tucks, leg presses, and clams.

I have been sick since Saturday (fever, sore throat, stuffy head, nauseous), so I went to the doctor today. It is probably not strep, and the doctor told me to take the day off and rest today, so I am at home drinking liquids. Hopefully I will be better by Wednesday!

Friday Jul 18

Running 22:27 [3] 2.6 mi (8:38 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Running
Went running around Carmel Valley again. The smoke was really, really bad today. My eyes were stinging and my throat and chest were killing me. I was coughing pretty much the entire time. With the lack of oxygen/presence of lots of extra particulates, I was feeling pretty slow. It will be nice to get back to the nice, clean Boston air :-). The fire camp was all packed up and gone. Maybe they decided to move somewhere a little farther from the fires...

Running 21:48 [3] 2.6 mi (8:23 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Running
Went running up by the firefighter camp again. It was really, really smokey this morning, which made breathing uncomfortable. My legs were also sore from yesterday, which I guess isn't that surprising. I saw some more exciting colored fire trucks, too (yellow, white with a red stripe, lots of green). There were also lots of Navajo fire trucks. There are apparently 900 firefighters living in the camp.

Tuesday Jul 15

Strength 22:30 [3]
shoes: Brooks Running
Did conditioning this morning. The smoke was really bad this morning and breathing was really uncomfortable. Did butt kicks, knee lifts, lunges, power skips, calf raises, 1-legged squats, murphies, and then my normal core work out with a couple of extras and some extra reps.

Monday Jul 14

Running 20:20 [3] 2.3 mi (8:51 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Running
I'm in CA at a flute master class, which so far has been a lot of fun. I went for a run this morning, which was pretty nice. I was feeling the altitude a bit (we are in the mountains), but it was cool to see the tops of the mountains in and above the clouds. I also saw lots and lots of fire trucks from several different countries. We are quite near the fires here. Apparently in some countries fire trucks are green.
Strength 6:00 [3]
Normal core workout.

Friday Jul 11

Elliptical 32:10 [3] 3.0 mi (10:43 / mi)
My running off day, so I went to the gym to elliptical instead. I was a bit sore from the strength training in physical therapy today, but in general it felt pretty good.
Strength 10:00 [3]
Strength training at physical therapy: leg presses, squats with weights, lunges with weights, bridges, and knee-to-chest's.

Thursday Jul 10

Running 20:00 [3] 2.45 mi (8:09 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Running
Moved up to 20 minutes today. I was feeling a little sore from the strength training yesterday, but it eased up once I started running. Ran from my apartment to the Charles and then did the JFK to River St. loop except that it was really shady on the Boston side of the river and really sunny on the Cambridge side, so I didn't actually cross the River St. bridge and just ran twice on the Boston side of the river. I also forgot to take my inhaler before running. Luckily it was cooler and less humid.
Strength 6:00 [3]
Normal core workout.

Wednesday Jul 9

Strength 10:00 [3]
Did strength training at the physical therapist this morning: leg presses, squats with weights, lunges with weights, bridges, and "knee-to-chest"s (I'm not sure what these are supposed to actually do as they didn't seem to stretch anything or feel like there was any strength involved. Everything felt fine except for some pain on the lunges with weights. Afterword my right piriformus was feeling tired-sore, which is greatly preferable to the sharp stabbing pains. I have also been moved up to 20 minute runs every other day!

Monday Jul 7

Running 15:00 [3] 1.83 mi (8:12 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Running
Got to move up to 15 minutes of running today! I wasn't in pain at all, but it felt fairly awful because of the heat and humidity. I wasn't moving as fast as I have been.

Friday Jul 4

Running 10:00 [3] 1.3 mi (7:41 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Running
Went on my first run with Presto!!! I'm on my second 10 minute run. My next run can be 15 minutes. Unfortunately I don't think that this particular run was exactly what the physical therapist had in mind. Presto has really latched on to my dad, so I was having to give him tugs on the leash every time he wanted to go back with my dad. He did seem to eventually get the idea, though. He's a great dog!

Wednesday Jul 2

Running 10:00 [3] 1.26 mi (7:56 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Running
I went to the physical therapist that Pia recommended today. She was MUCH better than anyone else I have gone to see. Thanks Pia! They said that my piriformis was tight and gave me some stretches as well as a plan to get back running. Today I was allowed to run 10 minutes with a 5 minute walking warm-up and cool down. It felt pretty good.

Tuesday Jul 1

Biking 24:00 [3] 4.6 mi (5:13 / mi)
Biking to the CSU training at Pine Hill.
Orienteering 1:04:41 [3] **** 4 km (16:10 / km)
shoes: New Balance Orienteering
Went to the CSU training at Pine Hill. Brendan set up a Line-O, which was a lot of fun and worked well since I still am not supposed to run. I found the streamers, and I felt like I was sticking line pretty well, so the walking paid off at least a bit. I ran a tiny bit, which felt fine. I'm going to the physical therapist tomorrow, so hopefully I can start running for real soon!
