Hiking 1:30:00 [3] 5.0 mi (18:00 / mi) +400m 14:25 / mi
shoes: Brooks Running 17

Hiking up the Cascade Falls trail on Mt Tam with Sam and Presto! Last weekend's longish and flat hike went well for my hip, so we decided to try short and steepish this week. We went up what was a surprisingly nice trail with lots of mossy rocks and trees and little water falls and then popped out onto a hill top with a really nice view of the Pacific Ocean.

My hip was starting to get a bit tired feeling by the top, but generally did quite well. I think it could have done more distance without a problem, but it was probably at it's limit for climb for today. Presto had a great time sniffing all the things, and Sam had a great time taking copious pictures. Fun, fun!

Computer day in lab with a run

Steps: 11075
Stairs: 104
Distance: 4.65 miles

My conclusion from this week spent mainly working at the computer is that my normal daily routine, which basically includes walking Presto, going to work, and going to music rehearsals adds up to about 6000 steps. On days when I also go for a run, that adds about 5000 additional steps. Or in other words, I am about as active during my 30 minutes of running in the evening as I am for the entire rest of the day combined. Eep.

If all goes as planned and my cells grow and whatnot, next week I'll get to add some days with lab work into the mix. I can only hope that improves my statistics a bit...

Computer day in lab with no running

Distance: ??

Running 24:00 [3] 2.5 mi (9:36 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Running 17

2 min run/1 min walk with Sam and Presto! Sam decided that 2 min run/1 min walk was close enough to actually running that he would join me tonight :-). It was nice to run with human company. My legs were feeling a bit funny tonight, but generally fine. Nice evening for a run!

Strength 5:00 [3]

Coming in from the run, I automatically started doing tuck-ups without thinking about it, and only realized what I was doing partway through the first set. I decided to just do one set of 30 instead of my usual two and then continued on with crunches, side crunches, and planks.

I started feeling something slightly odd in my hip towards the end of the set of 30 tuck-ups but at least at the beginning they clearly felt completely normal since I didn't even notice that I was doing them!

Stretching 10:00 [3]

Normal stretching.

Mostly computer day in lab with about 2 hours of bench work plus a run

Steps: 11391
Floors: 116
Distance: 4.64 miles (but the distance on the run was 0.8 miles short on a 3.1 mile loop, so...yeah...)

Computer day in lab with no running

Steps: 5743
Floors: 57 (hah...)
Distance: 2.1 miles

Running 24:00 [3] 2.5 mi (9:36 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Running 17

2 min run/1 min walk with Presto! Presto was super excited tonight. My hip was not quite as good as over the weekend, but I think sitting at a computer all day was probably the culprit.

Strength 5:00 [3]

Crunches, side crunches, plank, and side planks.

Stretching 10:00 [3]

Normal stretching.

Hiking 2:00:00 [3] 9.0 mi (13:20 / mi)
shoes: Brooks Running 17

Hiking along the Middle(?) Fork of the American River with Sam and Presto! We wanted to go hiking this weekend, but I wasn't sure that my hip was up for much climb, so we headed to Auburn for a nice hike along a river. It was quite pleasant, if not spectacular. The trail was mostly flat with some gentle rolling hills. My hip was mostly fine with a few twinges on some of the longer uphill sections. There were also an old mine that was kind of neat. Oh! And we saw a newt, which was super cute! Presto was very excited about the newt :-). We'll probably come back sometime once I'm healed for a trail run here. It will be cool in the spring when the river is at full flow!

Normal stretching back at home.
