Orienteering race 1:07:00 [5]
British Long O Champs - 3rd
2nd or maybe 3rd podium in JK/BOC indivodual champs in 40 + years. ....as far as my memory tells me. Result. (It's very tough being in the class of 57 :-( )
Next time I drive down the A7 I may just have to go and thank a cow for their contribution.
Switched to a base plate compass this week when out in Balfour and Birsemore and decided maybe it works better for me. Went with that.
Fair bit of work on the Blue Start in advance so not best preparation but very tolerable.
1: Went over the hill , but came down somewhat too low but not sure if I'd be quicker going round anyway. 1 mins down.
3: Could see this might be a key control so tooks this pretty carefully - lost some time being a little east of the control.
4: got lucky - another key control for potential time loss. Careful again and spot on.
5: stupidly hit the fence where i wanted to but saw what looked like a fence corner so thought I was somehow too far north so turned right. Back up to the other corner..whopps - the original was the crossing point - just hadnt noticed the kink under the purple crossing point markings. Another minute I guess.
8: Went round the east track but seemed to be slow
9: Slow and hesitated pretty much at the control. Stupidly expected it to be on the crag not the re-entrant. Confused until I saw it.
12: Very wary with the vegetation change but think I remembered it from previous event - went carefully through the re-entrant with another control on it.
15: Tired and too low. 1 minute
16: Tired and fearful of blowing things. Faffed.
A perfect run might have saved about 4 minutes but that would have been a big ask at Balmoral. Most disappointed with time loss to 5, 15 and 16. Well pleased overall though as don't think I could realistically have hoped for better. Nice to do well on home soil.
