‘Lochnagar the long way’ with SW
We didn’t fancy a routine virtual effort to replace London so something more motivating was required. Home to the top of NE Scotland’s most iconic top seemed appropriate.

Switched everything to Friday when the weekends weather forecast clearly wasn’t getting better, and when it became clear that essential friends and family, who’d offered to help, could put themselves out even more.

One of the best ever running days.

Close to being mangled on the road from Ballogie to Aboyne but from then on diversionary chatter with family and friends, some expected, some not so, was quite brilliant. T was there at refreshment stops, K ran a stretch, AT did a huge stint on the bike, FC also on a bike popped up out of nowhere. Then IW interrupted his mid ride coffee in Ballater to snatch a chat while he joined us for 400m, then another short bit with DC again on his bike up Glen Muick.

AT turned around at the bothy as we hit the real hill. Then it was JM, PM and CW All the way up doing the sherpa bit.

Time was no interest although a nominal 5 hours was in the mind. SW is way quicker than me but it’s to her credit that was completely incidental. Delighted to both be in good shape at the top.

Great route along DW and the quiet west side of Glen Muick.

A mite nippy on top and great to be joined by T, K, CB, DW, EW and TW. Good chat.

A few thoughts for absent friends.

Cambus Canters September virtually
With K except she put 15m on me in the first 800 and it stayed like that all the way. Not much I could do about it. Still, completed the 2020 set of three albeit with the slowest of them. Not done that many Canters in a year for quite an age.

Trouble is that all the seems to happen when you work hard on fitness at the higher age numbers is that in fact all you do is maintain fitness. And that is at best. Probably just slowing down the degradation whilst the pain seems to get worse. Certainly the gentle undulations at the back end of the Cambus route seem pretty mountainous these days.

Fairly gently round Cambus tracks before a stint on the start at the O. Steered clear of competing in the tough terrain today as legs a bit trashed from two hard “races” in last two days and a Cambus time trial to do tomorrow or Tuesday. Not a good time to break anything. O can start again with the night series.

Good chats with people not seen for an age. Even with people from “foreign” lands like FVO and MOR.
