skate skiing hills (with pack) 2:57:00 [3] ** 24.0 km (7:23 / km) +500m 6:41 / km

Another foggy day so we skied down to the birkie stadion. None of the cafes were open so we ate a quick lunch standing out in the wind.
Then the big climb back up to Nordseter. The first time of the whole trip that I heard Kestrel say he was tired.
I think still recovering from yesterday's long ski.

skate skiing long 5:15:00 [2] ** 42.0 km (7:30 / km) +400m 7:10 / km

Two sessions AM and pm.
Freezing rain in the am. Change others, lunch, nap
And go again at 3 pm.aiming for a 20 km loop.
Partway through changed to a different loop due to fresher grooming.
When almost back the gromming dead ended near the top of a small mountain. Dense fog and four feet of snow made misbehaving unwise, also 5:15 pm and darkness at 6. No headlamps.did some backtracking then a new loop but continued trouble of only some trails being groomed.
Then I remembered that the knife I had in the belt pack pocket had a pen light.with that confidence to read the map we continued on instead of bailing out to hitchhike. Back to the cabin at 6:30

running 28:00 [2] 2.0 mi (14:00 / mi) +80m 12:27 / mi

Very icy and slow.

skate skiing hills 1:00:00 [3] 6.0 mi (10:00 / mi) +120m 9:25 / mi

Nice to get to ski after a day of travelling. Wicked foggy and windy but warm, just below freezing.

skate skiing hills 30:00 [2] 6.0 km (5:00 / km) +50m 4:48 / km

Nice little area in Polva with a base of man-made snow.
Many of the trails weren't open yet. Only two inches of fresh on top of bare ground.

running warm up/down 22:00 [2] 2.0 mi (11:00 / mi) +5m 10:55 / mi

running warm up/down 11:00 [2] 1.0 mi (11:00 / mi) +20m 10:22 / mi

Pre race warm up on the icy road.

ski-orienteering race 37:44 [5] *** 7.0 km (5:23 / km) +60m 5:10 / km
spiked:15/16c (injured) (sick)

Fairly flat terrain. A dusting of snow slowed down the glide a little ,but the wide trails were still icy. And the little woods trails still littered with bare spots and downed logs.
Better speed than yesterday, but still fell into one black hole.
Lost about 6 minutes on that one.

classic skiing race 16:00 [5] 5.0 km (3:12 / km) +80m 2:58 / km

Felt uncoordinated with th kick and glide, but strong enough double poling.

classic skiing warm up/down 1:00:00 [3] 11.0 km (5:27 / km) +30m 5:23 / km

Skied down from work, getting to the race with about 4 minutes to spare.
Then skied home .

ski-orienteering race 1:18:26 [5] ** 15.0 km (5:14 / km) +100m 5:04 / km
spiked:13/17c

Slow to interpret the mismapped trails that were obscured by the start triangle. So Kestrel was faster than me to all 3 first controls. But I caught up eventually. I was the last starter and was the first finisher on the longest course. Lots of narrow trails were great practice for European skiO.

Ski down from work, around ruthies, the warm up for race. Easy ski of course after the race, then get pack and ski home. Still light at 5::30!

snowshoeing long 2:00:00 [2] 3.0 mi (40:00 / mi) +20m 39:11 / mi

Fun to wake up to 6 inches of new snow this morning. Three snowshoeing sessions for packing trails, shovelling the driveway, cutting and hauling firewood, picking up controls.from last weekend. A bit sore in the hips and shoulders from the classic marathon yesterday.

Saturday Feb 1, 2014 #

classic skiing race 3:27:00 [4] 48.0 km (4:19 / km) +800m 3:59 / km

4 laps. I had decent grip but poor glide. Never really pushed it hard except on some of th hills on th fourth lap before I rewaxed.
Horribly tragic that a skier died on th e course.
