backpacking hills (daypack) 8:00:00 [1] * 15.0 mi (32:00 / mi) +1500m 24:25 / mi

Hike up Baxter peak then Hamlin. Both on Kestrels list. Starting at 1000 ft makes 5200 feel a long way up. Full Sun all day made the afternoon descent hot. Hunt trail has about a mile where hands are needed for rock climbing like moves. Ascent is fun but the descent more challenging with a bit of exposure at times. Beautiful views with hours above treeline .

backpacking hills (daypack) 7:00:00 [1] * 11.0 mi (38:11 / mi) +1500m 26:49 / mi

3 peaks with fairly significant climb between them. North brother, south brother, and mt Coe.
The highlight was seeing a pine marten hanging out in a tree. Not at all scared of us. A major part of the descent was down the slidepath of mt Coe.
Very steep and slippery. An slow going.

kayaking (whitewater) 30:00 [2] ** 2.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

Big family splurge. Going rafting on the Kennebec on our way to Baxter.
So as well as paddling the raft I. The upper white water. On the lower section I spent quite a while in th I inflatable kayak. Fun to paddle solo, but a real pig with two people in it. I had one good surf in it.

running race (trail) 22:00 [5] 3.0 mi (7:20 / mi) +80m 6:46 / mi

The route started with wide trails, but most was single track. Sometimes that slowed me down to have look for footing with ferns etc leaning into the trail.
Felt fast at the beginning, keeping up with Zac and Steve, but they pulled away once it got narrow.

running long (and hilly) 1:18:00 [3] 12.0 km (6:30 / km) +550m 5:17 / km

My final run in Costa Rica. All the way to the of the road which was wicked steep. worked hard on the way back be cause I was meeting f Kestrel to run with him at 6:30am.
At our Spanish language graduation they had the CR vs Italy soccer game on.
We had to take a break for TH presentation of th certificates when CR scored their goal.
Then during our bus ride to the airport we heard that Costa Rica had won.
Th radio said that people were crowding the streets in celebration in Cartago so the driver took a detour. Lots of happy honking, flag waving, people wearing g red and blue jerseys, face paint. During one traffic jam I bought a flag from a street vendor out the window of the bus.
Finally made to the hotel to rest up for the early start for the 6 am flight.

First was body surfing in the Pacific. Then later a big pool on fresh water stream that a watefall landed in. At the beach we saw a coati , monkeys in The trees, a sloth slowing munching leaves, and many birds.

They gave me a machete today. Pretty continuous work chopping paths through grass, vines , brush. But had to be careful not to chop the target trees were weeding around. All my clothes were completely soaked with sweat by the time we got down the hill for lunch.

running 30:00 [3] ** 3.0 mi (10:00 / mi) +140m 8:44 / mi

Before coming to Costa Rica I had printed a map of the city , San isisdro el General, from mapquest. This morning I had to go exploring to figure out where I was on the map. Although much of th downtown is grid, there are enough unique turns and switchbacks on th steep hill near my host family,s house to match to the map. The dirt road I am living on isn't actually on the map. But most of th paved roads are so I know where I am.
