Note

A great week! Amazing weather, good accommodation, great company, good orienteering in varied terrain and a crackin hill race to put the icing on the cake. Orienteering was a bit rusty - I need to learn to slow down sometimes - but was particularly pleased with middle distance result when I did slow down!

Creag Dhubh hill race at Newtonmore Highland Games. Short race counter for both the British Fell running and the Scottish Hill runnining champs. 300 entries so it was a bit manic crossing all the obstacles after the start - two fences just to get out of the shinty field, another couple of fences, a river crossing, a ridiculously steep bank and another fence to get to the road crossing. Things settled down after that with a track run before reaching the foot of the hill. Nice gentle, runnable but narrow path up through the trees before a steep scramble to the top. Loop round the top and down a slightly different way before joining the original path for a fast descent. Felt I was running well, passing people on the climb. Lost a few places on the descent before crossing all the obstacles in reverse - much easier with less people around. Finished 1st V60 and with Bill Proctor of Helm Hill who was leading the championship only finishing 6th I may have sneaked a win in the British series! Still two races to go in the Scottish champs.
