Orienteering race 55:37 [3] **** 6.7 km (8:18 / km) +180m 7:19 / km
spiked:17/30c shoes: X-Talon 212 (SF)

CompassSport Trophy Final, Tankersley (near Barnsley), Blue Men. A rather frustrating run - made a mistake early on navigating from 3-4 when I should have been going from 2-3! By the time I realised, I wasn't sure where I was and had to relocate - this felt like it had taken ages but splits show I only(!) lost 2 mins - spent the rest of the race feeling like I was playing catch up so never relaxed or got any decent flow. This wasn't helped by a map which was difficult to read due to the fiddly contour detail which was obscured on large parts of the map by a green vegetation screen. IMO this wasn't helpful as it covered such a large area and didn't aid in navigation but just helped to hide the important detail - possibly worse for us RG colour blind sufferers? Was getting tired by the end and finished feeling very annoyed with my run but ultimately finished 12th on Blue - about 10 mins down on Clive Hallett, Quentin H and Tim T (5th M55 - 30s ahead of DonP ;-)) and 4th counter for the CST which was the important thing and not a disastrous result for RR (who finished 5th).
As team captain I was there early to help put the tent up and get the early starters organised - many of whom were relative novices - got cold and wet in the monsoon conditions (luckily it passed through relatively quickly and the weather was quite pleasant in the afternoon) and then stood around for 4 hours waiting for my start time - not ideal preparation. Calf survived more or less ok with only a few twinges.

Have just realised when checking splits that I was "penalised" 18s at the second last road crossing - it wasn't because I took my time, it was just the sheer volume of traffic - it cost me a place!
