British Championships, High Dam, M60. CHAMPION!
I have come to grief at High Dam in the past so that, combined with fears about my level of fitness after lambing time, made me adopt a very cautious approach. Decide not to run too hard and to take safe routes and be very careful "in the circle". Went high to 2 to get better running and a safer attack point and amazingly got a fastest split by 15s. Winsplits shows a 15s "mistake" at 6 - mainly down to hesitation and playing safe. Went well right 6-7, gambling on finding a trod along the side of the deer fence - worked a treat and I was able to run quite hard - 20+s fastest split. Again took the tracks and paths to the right on 8-9 and ran hard - 30+s. Backed off a bit on the loop from 10-16 and made sure I didn't make any fatal errors. Was very catious 14-15, frightened that I ran up the wrong stream/marsh and then I hesitated when I saw the wall ahead thinking I had overshot - just the scale catching me out - but Winsplits shows a 30s mistake - I can live with that! Ran harder from 16 and got a 30+s fastest split to 17. Tactics worked well and I still felt quite strong at the finish. PH 63.58, DonP 66.45, Olsoran 71.35

My first British title after 50 years of orienteering - it has been a long wait!
