Note

A great week! Amazing weather, good accommodation, great company, good orienteering in varied terrain and a crackin hill race to put the icing on the cake. Orienteering was a bit rusty - I need to learn to slow down sometimes - but was particularly pleased with middle distance result when I did slow down!

Hill running 36:39 [3] 5.68 km (6:27 / km) +349m 4:56 / km

Creag Dhubh hill race at Newtonmore Highland Games. Short race counter for both the British Fell running and the Scottish Hill runnining champs. 300 entries so it was a bit manic crossing all the obstacles after the start - two fences just to get out of the shinty field, another couple of fences, a river crossing, a ridiculously steep bank and another fence to get to the road crossing. Things settled down after that with a track run before reaching the foot of the hill. Nice gentle, runnable but narrow path up through the trees before a steep scramble to the top. Loop round the top and down a slightly different way before joining the original path for a fast descent. Felt I was running well, passing people on the climb. Lost a few places on the descent before crossing all the obstacles in reverse - much easier with less people around. Finished 1st V60 and with Bill Proctor of Helm Hill who was leading the championship only finishing 6th I may have sneaked a win in the British series! Still two races to go in the Scottish champs.

(rest day)

6 Day, Day 5, Craig a' Barns. Decided that a 10.05 start in CaB wasn't a good idea before an important hill race. Sorry to miss it but definitely a sensible decision. Helping set up starts at Grandtully.

6 Day, Day 4, Culteuchar & Dron, M60L. Open hillside and a bit of mediocre forest - knew it was going to be a burn up. Was pushing hard, too hard as I forgot to slow down at 9, the first one in the forest, and was too high and overshot. Lost 1m27s to Dixie who beat me into 2nd by 44s - such is life and particularly orienteering life.

(rest day)

6 Day rest day. Gentle stroll round Drummond Castle gardens and woodland walk - didn't take a coat and got a drookin! Evening walk round a wee loch near our accommodation in Glenalmond.

Orienteering race 28:14 [3] ***** 2.7 km (10:27 / km) +175m 7:54 / km

6 Day, Day3, Dundurn near St. Fillans at the east end of Loch Earn. M60L - middle distance. Have not done many middle distance races so decided to take it easy and try and not make too many mistakes. Strategy worked well - felt as though I was just at cruising speed and keeping in contact with the map. Only blip was at 6 where map didn't quite seem to fit with what I was expecting on the ground - not helped by me looking at the control description for 7 and thinking I was looking for a reentrant rather than a crag - ~30s. A very satisfying win by 1min1s. I could get to like this form of orienteering ;-).

Orienteering race 51:36 [3] *** 5.9 km (8:45 / km) +155m 7:44 / km

6 Day, Day 2, Edinchip (pronounced Edinkip!) M60L - a new area near Lochearnhead. Started off in a section of open hillside which I pushed hard on and was going well despite an earlyish start. There then followed a wee block of thickish coniferous forest(1 control), some fields a bigger block of mixed forest(1 control) and then out into some semi-open for another 4 controls. Got a bit ahead of myself going from 7-8 and misinterpreted the streams and blocks of trees and started looking for the control too soon. I the end had to bale out to a fence and come back in - 4 mins away. Had a nasty fall on the way down to 9 and skinned my nose with my glasses which amazingly escaped unscathed. Got a bit confused going from 11-12, firstly with a building which wasn't on the map and then by the "uncrossable" gorge/river - took a while to work out where I was allowed to go but was still a bit unsure about crossing walls and fences on the way. In the end this leg was removed on many courses due to lots of people ignoring the red/purple line and not all of them owning up to it. Then promptly was too low at 13, ~40s. 7th - 6 mins down on the Swede who won after being re-instated when leg 12 was removed. He had originally self declared tat he had crossed the stream. Only 1m17s behind Osloran in 2nd, 21s behind Dixie in 4th and 5s behind DonP in 5th.

Orienteering race 59:56 [3] 5.5 km (10:54 / km) +165m 9:29 / km
shoes: VJ irock2

Scottish 6 Day, Day 1, Auchingarrich. M60L
Possibly my least favourite forest - in the whole world! Was determined to not get defeated this time but promptly went walkabout at 2 and had to bale out to a fence - 4 mins away already. Got my head together after that and was fairly safe and steady for the next few until I got a bit offline and confused by the vegetation and ditches on the way to 11. This wasn't helped by drifting into navigating to 12 somewhere on the way and passing a control which "wasn't mine"! Fortunately I realised after a couple of hundred metres and turned back - another 4 mins binned. Relatively ok after that and was very surprised to finish 3rd - but a whopping 8 mins down!
