| Orienteering 19:40 [3]3.8 km (5:11 / km) | ||
| slept:6.0 shoes: Brooks trail shoes | ||
| Test run on the Minim Cove course to check distance and also check the map. I am inordinately proud of my first ever map :) Only minor changes to make, it was not that bad overall. Hopefully they won't set fire to anything else. | ||
| Roadie (commute) 20:00 [2]8.5 km (2:21 / km) | ||
| shoes: Mongoose Roadie | ||
| Wet, wet ride into work. Receptionists are all makeup-wearing 18 year-olds and think i am quite feral. They started my list an hour after i actually start today. I guess to make up for all the times they've booked my first patient for half an hour before i start. | ||

Sunday Mar 30 | ||
| Roadie (commute) 1:14:00 [3]36 km (2:03 / km) | ||
| slept:6.5 shoes: Mongoose Roadie | ||
| To kings park, 3x figure 8's then had breaky with grandma and rode home. She challenged me to do another lap of the park in the time it took her to walk from zamia to winthrop ave. It was a close one but i managed the win without having to run her over. | ||
| MTBO (training) 1:12:00 [2] | ||
| shoes: Rocky Mountain Instinct | ||
| Made up a short course at Langford Park and did some route choice practice. Lesson for the day is, it is rarely quicker to ride single track unless it is very significantly shorter. This applies to championship races only, because if you don't need to win then the extra fun is always worth the slower time. Had a play on some of the better trails out the back, practicing my route choice down the downhills. | ||
| MTB (intervals) 42:00 [2]13 km (3:14 / km) | ||
| shoes: Rocky Mountain Instinct | ||
| Met up with the ambos plus Ngaire and Robin for a night ride. We did a lap of the 12h track first, which took 1h40min! 42min ride time. It became an interval session, riding hard hard for 3min to keep up with cris who was on a mission, then stopping for 5 to wait for the slowies. Namely Scotto, who forgot his helmet light so could only see in straight lines (great for single track) and some other guy who was really unfit. Ngaire rode excellently for a first night ride, and smiled the whole time. Good fun. | ||
| MTB (fun fun fun) 48:00 [3] | ||
| shoes: Rocky Mountain Instinct | ||
| The others went off on the short loop and i did a longer and much more solid ride with Cris and Pete, skipping most of the 12h loop (which is quite boring) and did all the fun technical bits from the old days. Some bits were quite deep in honky nuts which was interesting- sort of like riding through the ball pit at ikea. Teeth-clenching stuff keeping up with those two on the downhills- lucky i have the new lights. And luckily did not break anything, John would probably not be impressed (and neither would my dad, who is our reserve for the keen race). | ||
Saturday Mar 29 | ||
| Note | ||
| slept:8.0 (rest day) | ||
| No even i can't justify logging putting out and collecting controls for a sprint event, or running around the block with the dog. Or carrying a boat around optimistically on top of my car but never getting it wet. Life got in the way today. | ||
Friday Mar 28 | ||
| Roadie (commute) 1:02:00 [2]26 km (2:23 / km) | ||
| slept:6.0 shoes: Mongoose Roadie | ||
| To work and back. | ||
| C • Joondalup Sprint 4 | ||
Thursday Mar 27 | ||
| Paddle 50:00 [3] | ||
| slept:6.0 shoes: Fenn XT | ||
| Meant to have a rest day but slept horribly so i had some extra time before work. Paddled hard into the strong easterly from matilda bay, then cruised back. | ||
Wednesday Mar 26 | ||
| Roadie (commute) 32:00 [2]13 km (2:28 / km) | ||
| slept:6.0 shoes: Mongoose Roadie | ||
| Slept badly due to dreaming about Ocad. So i gave up at 6am and did some Ocadding instead. Ocadding is not as fun as sleeping, although i did have a little smile when i inserted my boulder cluster from the weekend. | ||
| Roadie (commute) 29:00 [2]13 km (2:14 / km) | ||
| shoes: Mongoose Roadie | ||
| Home with the tailwind | ||
| Run long 1:50:00 [3]18 km (6:07 / km) | ||
| shoes: Metallic blue Asics | ||
| I had to be John for Wil tonight in the absence of John, which was good, forced me to do a long one. Ran with Hags to John's parents' to get the car, drove to the pool, ran around the golf course to drop off the dog at home. Then grass strips to the dog beach, up the beach to city beach, up Oceanic, over Reabold, over the limestone terrain loopy bit and back to the pool. Nice slow steady pace so it didn't hurt too much. Calves tight from the sandhills. | ||
Tuesday Mar 25 | ||
| Roadie (commute) 34:00 [2]13 km (2:37 / km) | ||
| slept:8.5 shoes: Mongoose Roadie | ||
| Feeling really crap again (sore throat etc. I have to stop hanging around sick people) so i skipped the group ride and rode very slowly into work instead. | ||
| Roadie (commute) 29:00 [2]13 km (2:14 / km) | ||
| shoes: Mongoose Roadie | ||
| Home with the tail wind | ||
| Run hills (SAS sandhill) 12:29 [5] | ||
| shoes: Brooks trail shoes | ||
| Oh yeah i love sandhill reps! Actually the SAS hill (although steep and evil) is not as steep as the ones at Myalup where you needed to use hands as well to get up. So it was ok. Big group today but they were all very very fast or very slow so i was all alone. Haggles joined me for half a rep before realising what a silly exercise it was.
2 sets of 3 reps with 30sec rest between reps and 3min between sets. 2.00 2.06 2.07 2.09 2.05 2.02 Legs all wobbly afterwards but felt good.
| Run warm up/down 22:00 [2] | ||
| shoes: Brooks trail shoes | ||
| Warm up and down from reabold | ||
Monday Mar 24 | ||
| Run (dog jog) 45:00 [3] | ||
| slept:7.5 shoes: Brooks trail shoes | ||
| John woke up early today and was really keen to do some training so we ran with Haggles to the beach, did 30sec on / 90sec off to the end of the dog beach and back, quick swim then ran home. | ||
| Walk (mapping) 2:30:00 [0] | ||
| shoes: Brooks trail shoes | ||
| Pottered around Minim Cove for most of the morning then spent twice as long wrestling with Ocad. I felt good until i was told that, no, you don't get much faster with experience, it will always be this frustrating. I thought that Minim cove wouldn't have a uni campus-style rate of change, but since i was there a month ago they have set fire to patches of green stuff (turning them into bare rocky ground), pulled up carefully drawn significant trees, built playgrounds, all sorts of crazy goings-on.
I went home for a lie-down after i got frighteningly excited by a small stream and a boulder cluster. Don't want to turn into a weirdo orienteer just yet.
Sunday Mar 23 | ||
| MTB (easter pootle) 50:00 [2] | ||
| slept:8.0 shoes: Rocky Mountain Instinct | ||
| With John, Soph and Hunter (who bludged on the back). Rode to the Myalup easter fair, where Pete proudly dug up an easter egg in the sandpit and a lot of people, who really didn't need to, ate large hot dogs. Then back home again so that Hunter and John could have naps (they get a bit tired and grumpy after too many clowns and bouncy castles) | ||
| Run long (sand, sand and sand) 1:25:00 [3] | ||
| shoes: Metallic blue Asics | ||
| Lovely long run with John to the beach, then through the dunes (over every steep sand hill. "so that we can see better" said John, "because i'm not sure of the way". Sure...) Then through a graveyard for old tyres, over some more sand hills, out across the causeway between the pink lakes and back and then for variety some more sandhills. Felt really good, and ready for more. I guess because of a week off running, or maybe the sea air. | ||
| Paddle intervals (myalup) 40:00 [3] | ||
| shoes: Fenn XT | ||
| Was a bit grumpy and didn't have much time, so i did 40 strokes on/ 20 off for about 25min, then cruised back with the waves (not so good for catching today). | ||
| MTB (night) 1:30:00 [3] | ||
| shoes: Rocky Mountain Instinct | ||
| Same ride as yesterday but in the opposite direction and sans pete. So it was solid but not quite as solidly solid. Tried out the new lights, which are brilliant. Literally. I'm not sure exactly what John said to the Ayup people to get the large discount and all the free stuff, so i'm a bit worried about what will happen if we don't do well in the keen race. | ||
Saturday Mar 22 | ||
| Paddle (ocean) 1:25:00 [3] | ||
| slept:8.0 shoes: Fenn XT | ||
| With John and Pete at "Mylup". Good fun - pretty hard paddling into the seabreeze for 45min trying to catch pete who had pessimistically given himself a 15min head start. He thought he'd be slow on Soph's little ski but forgot that he would still be using Pete's muscles. I don't think we actually gained on him at all until he stopped to wait.
Great fun on the way back and caught a few good runs. I love the big waves that start to break behind you, so you have to paddle really really fast and go "wheeeeeee". It is the yelling i think that keeps the ski upright. Got off on the wrong side of the boat and kneecapped myself, ouch.
| MTB (myalup) 1:30:00 [3] | ||
| shoes: Rocky Mountain Instinct | ||
| Rode with john and pete out along the sandy limestone corrugated road, and back into the seabreeze along the edge of the lake. Perfect evening for it, and really good fun. Bailed a bit early to, er, help Soph with dinner. Or at least, to sit on the couch. Lucky because i gather the final 20min were a bit of a testosterone-fest that was better off left alone. | ||
Friday Mar 21 | ||
| Orienteering 20:46 [5]4.06 km (5:07 / km) | ||
| slept:7.0 shoes: Metallic blue Asics | ||
| Trying out John's sprint course at Joondalup. Good fun, and well mapped (thanks carol and ken!) except where the work people keep moving the scaffolding. John walked it, and nearly didn't make it back after walking through the middle of the police academy lunch break, looking pretty shifty in a large floppy hat writing notes on a clipboard. | ||
| C • I was thinking about using ... 1 | ||
| Run 30:00 [2] | ||
| shoes: Feet | ||
| This counts a jog at joondalup looking for john, some jogging around UWA checking my course while john ran it, and also a jog up the beach and back instead of the beach session. | ||
| Swim 5:00 [2] | ||
| shoes: Feet | ||
| Beach session was pretty hardcore tonight. Only deb turned up, and she was about as keen as we were. Then Brian rolled up 10min late having been drinking wine for 5 hours. | ||
Thursday Mar 20 | ||
| Run (dark) 55:00 [3]10 km (5:30 / km) | ||
| slept:6.5 shoes: Brooks trail shoes | ||
| I've had enough of daylight saving now- should have ended 2 weeks ago. Vera and i started running at 6.15 and it was only just light when we finished. Felt good this morning. Wearing in new shoes which are really comfy already. | ||
Wednesday Mar 19 | ||
| Roadie (commute) 29:00 [2]13 km (2:14 / km) | ||
| slept:9.0 (sick) shoes: Mongoose Roadie | ||
| Still have lyme disease, but it is much better now. Its actually really fun riding to work after a couple of days off training - effortless and still my second fastest time ever. Got here 45min early. Not because of the riding, just a moment of idiocy. | ||
| Roadie (commute) 45:00 [2]19 km (2:22 / km) | ||
| shoes: Mongoose Roadie | ||
| Home. Thought about running but went to the movies instead which was far more fun. It was a documentary about a solo round the world yacht race during which all but one competitor went slowly mad. Awesome. Makes AR seem suddenly easy! Need to start training again one day though | ||
Tuesday Mar 18 | ||
| Roadie (commute) 22:00 [2]10 km (2:12 / km) | ||
| slept:8.0 (sick) shoes: Mongoose Roadie | ||
| To work 1 then to parents' for lunch - thought i'd have a nap here to avoid the cleaning lady but she is everywhere....
Wasn't going to credit a sore throat and a temperature with being sick, but it stopped me going riding this morning and anyway boltboi claims sickness if a loud noise makes his heart rate go up to 45... ;) I think i have caught sleeping sickness off the ticks from ngangaguringguring... but couldn't sleep anyway cos of the itching. John says if i don't stand still so much when in the bush i wouldn't get landed on so much. Fair call.
| C • Ticks jump 2 | ||
| Roadie (commute) 54:00 [2]21 km (2:34 / km) | ||
| shoes: Mongoose Roadie | ||
| To work 2 then home. Would have been all time inverse PB if it weren't for the lovely tailwind on the way home! Thought about running then had a nap instead, which was far more enjoyable. | ||
Monday Mar 17 | ||
| Roadie (commute) 30:00 [3]13 km (2:18 / km) | ||
| slept:8.0 (rest day) shoes: Mongoose Roadie | ||
| Nice pootle to work after a quick trip to the beach (beach was so lovely today) | ||
| Roadie (commute) 35:00 [2]14 km (2:30 / km) | ||
| shoes: Mongoose Roadie | ||
| Pootle home again. Had a tow this time from some overmuscled lycra-clad roadie hoon - amazingly all the way to my front gate | ||
Sunday Mar 16 | ||
| Roadie (commute) 24:00 [3]11 km (2:11 / km) | ||
| slept:6.0 shoes: Mongoose Roadie | ||
| To the train station. Its amazing how many bikes you can fit on a train! And also how much posturing can go on. | ||
| Roadie race (Freeway Bike Ride) 1:27:00 [4]59.3 km (1:28 / km) | ||
| shoes: Mongoose Roadie | ||
| Really good fun mass participation event from Kwinana to Joondalup. Once the real idiots got themselves out of the way (a lot of people taking such a silly, untimed race very seriously) we settled into the middle of a big pack and got sucked at 40+ to joondalup. Only a couple of people fell off. | ||
| Roadie (commute) 57:00 [3]26 km (2:12 / km) | ||
| shoes: Mongoose Roadie | ||
| Home from Joondalup | ||
| Roadie (commute) 24:00 [2]10 km (2:24 / km) | ||
| shoes: Mongoose Roadie | ||
| To parents for lunch. Slowing down now. | ||
| Paddle 1:37:00 [4] | ||
| shoes: Fenn XT | ||
| Oh that was hard work! But such a lovely day. First team training session for the GSAR. In fact, it was our first team training session for last year's caffeinated race too. It was a definite '4' effort, trying to stay within 50m of the other three as they cruised easily along, chatting. No, not bitter at all! I just wanted to get closer to Pete's rocky horror show tights. I seem to have caught john's numb leg thing, got really sore by the end and had to stop a couple of times to stretch. Probably just not used to paddling any more (and perhaps a bit stiff from 100km of riding in the morning?) | ||
Saturday Mar 15 | ||
| Orienteering (training) 1:20:00 [2]6.7 km (11:56 / km) | ||
| slept:6.0 shoes: Retro green Asics | ||
| Another practice loop (nice clover leaf one at Ngangaguringguring) set by LOST Richard again. Course was good, map not so great. I did a whole lot better than last week - learning to follow contours much better so i'm not running off into the distance any more. Went slowly and didn't mess up too much (will look at track later). Still have real trouble telling brown blobs from boulders. Seems a bit random sometimes which is mapped as what.
Lesson for the day is that O maps have such crazy scales, and you have always always gone further than you think. 1cm is only 100m. 1cm is bigger than you think, and 100m nowhere near as far as it seems. Ditto for MTBO maps. (It is probably becoming obvious that i am still far from clear on foot orienteering...)
| MTBO (route choice practice) 46:00 [3]10.5 km (4:23 / km) | ||
| shoes: Rocky Mountain Instinct | ||
| John and i did the medium course of an old event at gunjin, one leg at a time and taking different routes. Except for one leg which we rode together because john was dubious (?why) about the only alternate route which was 2km further and went 8 contours down to the river and back up. Some were quite similar. Some were singletrack vs longer firetrail, or hilly bitumen vs shorter soft gravel routes. Every time we were both right about which would be quicker, and every time the difference was only 30-60sec. So the lesson for the day is, just make a decision based on your first (educated) instinct and stick with it. Because stopping to think about it takes up more time that you will gain in the end. And John learned that trying to be lazy and heading straight back to the car through ankle-deep pea gravel instead of going to the last control on a nice rideable pine track, is not always faster. | ||
Friday Mar 14 | ||
| Roadie (commute) 1:27:00 [3]39 km (2:14 / km) | ||
| slept:6.0 shoes: Mongoose Roadie | ||
| Met a colleague (who rides a limited edition bianchi, which is dressed up as a ducati motorbike and looks like it has been polished more than ridden (or at least polished since it was ridden, unlike my bike). Very flash.) for the commute to work. Meant i tried a bit harder than usual and went a bit further, which is Good. Slow trip home due to a meander through subi. | ||
| Run (beach session) 35:00 [4] | ||
| shoes: Feet | ||
| Felt shattered again at the start but there were a heap of people tonight and some of them remembered that i had just sat on the beach last week. Ran ok, not that fast but kept strong (and even did 6 laps instead of 3 in the last set while waiting for people!)
The last run in the cardio set was hard, HR 180 at the end! I caught up with anthony when he ended up up to his chest in the ocean ("touch the edge of the water" were the instructions, i guess he was keen) and didn't want to give up my lead on the final lap.
| Strength/Core (beach session) 25:00 [3] | ||
| shoes: Feet | ||
| The other bits of the beach session | ||
| Note | ||
| Was going to log walking from the car to the beach and sitting on a towel for 10min while john swam, but pete won't let me. | ||
Thursday Mar 13 | ||
| Paddle (river) 1:00:00 [3] | ||
| slept:8.0 shoes: Fenn XT | ||
| At last a paddle! Braved peak hour traffic then paddled from Freshwater Bay to Minim Cove and back. Great to be back on the water, but arms not used to it any more. | ||
Wednesday Mar 12 | ||
| Swim (float) 2:00 [1] | ||
| slept:7.0 shoes: Feet | ||
| Took the dog to the beach. Ocean was pastel pink and there were dolphins. | ||
| Roadie (commute) 30:00 [3]13 km (2:18 / km) | ||
| shoes: Mongoose Roadie | ||
| Started out all sluggish but got riled up by a triathlete who had a race number on his leg (presumably from at least sunday - don't they wash?) | ||
| C • Total 3 | ||
| Roadie (commute) 32:00 [2]13 km (2:28 / km) | ||
| shoes: Mongoose Roadie | ||
| Home again | ||
| Run long (-ish) 1:05:00 [3]10.6 km (6:08 / km) | ||
| shoes: Retro green Asics | ||
| Nice run through Reabold etc with john's running squad (ie, me. Because will couldn't make it.) He says we went at "rogaine pace" but i've seen his rogaine pace and it is not true because we did not stop three times for lunch. | ||
Tuesday Mar 11 | ||
| Roadie (Floreat Group) 1:18:00 [4]38 km (2:03 / km) | ||
| slept:8.0 shoes: Mongoose Roadie | ||
| I struggled sooo much and still got dropped twice before freo - the first time some nice roadie gave me a push so i could catch up, and i fell off the back again minutes later. Felt crap, then looked at my speedo and was going 42 and not catching up. So i think perhaps the pace was up and i was not altogether crap. Kept up on McCabe, skipped the golf course hill and joined in for the rest. Bailed just before UWA so that the bakery would be on the way. | ||
| Roadie (commute) 15:00 [3]6.5 km (2:18 / km) | ||
| shoes: Mongoose Roadie | ||
| From parents' to work | ||
| Roadie (commute) 32:00 [2]13 km (2:28 / km) | ||
| shoes: Mongoose Roadie | ||
| Home again via a few errands. Got off work really early thanks to my last 4 patients being a family of south africans, all with the same first name, who turned up 45min early and were quick to deal with :)
| ||
| Run hills (evil parabolic hills) 12:59 [5]2.1 km (6:11 / km) | ||
| shoes: Retro green Asics | ||
| Evil, evil hills. Having said that, i only had to do five but still chose to do 6. Stupid hills. Couldn't feel my legs at all for most of it, and definitely couldn't run hard, but i'm told just running strongly is still beneficial. Didn't feel beneficial, only evil.
Oh and my splits for the 2 sets of three x 350m evil hills: 2.05 2.10 2.13 2.13 2.13 2.05
| Run warm up/down 35:00 [2] | ||
| shoes: Retro green Asics | ||
| warmups, recoveries etc | ||
Monday Mar 10 | ||
| Run (golf course TT) 23:59 [5]5 km (4:48 / km) | ||
| slept:7.0 shoes: Retro green Asics | ||
| John woke up with a sick hankering to do a 5k time trial so i joined in. Legs heavy i think from spin but i managed to push for most of it. Ran better up Durston than last time, but didn't have saz to push me for the first 4k so it evened out. | ||
| Run warm up/down 5:00 [2] | ||
| shoes: Retro green Asics | ||
| A couple of run throughs etc - not ideal doing the warmup on the bike | ||
| Roadie (commute) 31:00 [3]13 km (2:23 / km) | ||
| shoes: Mongoose Roadie | ||
| To the golf course and then to work. | ||
| Roadie (commute) 38:00 [3]14 km (2:43 / km) | ||
| shoes: Mongoose Roadie | ||
| Home via the pub and the shops. Only just in time to polish some furniture and have john's dinner ready so he wouldn't get angry again... | ||
Sunday Mar 9 | ||
| Run (dog jog) 20:00 [2] | ||
| slept:8.0 shoes: Retro green Asics | ||
| Pottered to the oval and back, with a tennis ball break in the middle. Haggles carried the ball all the way home today, with uncharacteristic focus. Only dropped it in the neighbours' hedge at the end. | ||
| Roadie (commute) 1:03:00 [3]23 km (2:44 / km) | ||
| shoes: Mongoose Roadie | ||
| To john's gym and back. Slower on the way home due to the head wind and the hills, apparently. Not due to waiting for the MTBer on my tail. | ||
| Roadie (spin) 1:00:00 [5]21 km (2:51 / km) | ||
| Spin class at john's gym. Hard work and very sweaty, if a little bit dodgily run - he would start a set with "the max intensity at 80rpm" then make you speed up. Which is impossible, by definition. I went a km less than john, so he ended up in northbridge. I guess. Also 120kcal less, which is why he ate all the wedding cake. | ||
| Swim (token) 12:00 [1]0.6 km (20:00 / km) | ||
| shoes: Feet | ||
| I really didn't want to do this before i got in the pool, and even less so once i was in the pool, so i got out while noone was watching. | ||
| Note | ||
| Have finally downloaded the GPS trace for yesterday's O course and my total stoppage time was 43min which is half the time! So my pace was quite respectable :) | ||
Saturday Mar 8 | ||
| Orienteering (training) 1:15:00 [2]6 km (12:30 / km) | ||
| slept:6.0 shoes: Retro green Asics | ||
| LOST Richard kindly organised a course for the easter people so we crashed it. It was my first bush course for a year, and i couldn't do it back then so i wasn't expecting to have improved much. And i hadn't. The GPS trace must be hilarious. I didn't get really lost though- just took it very slow and wobbled a lot. Walked 90% and stood still for the rest. All good practice, and it was lovely in the bush. Amazed there are not hundreds of people out there looking for bits of toilet paper on a saturday morning - what else could you possibly want to do?
I wish I learned things quickly, it's hard being such a plonker and a wee bit embarassing. Boltboi and Tooms seem to find everything so easy. I think I'll stick to mountain biking. The simplicity of just pedaling and following a track is more my style of complexity. Bike-bike-bikel. And i wish my subconscious couldn't type - i'm afraid that tooms will be upset when he is reminded (again) by my insenstive rambling how simple MTBing is. He is already so touchy about his kitten-like riding ability, and i try to make him feel better by pretending that he is not a total punter and that it is a difficult skill.
| MTB (fun circles) 1:00:00 [3]11 km (5:27 / km) | ||
| shoes: Rocky Mountain Instinct | ||
| Stopped at forsyth mill on the way home from mt billy and did a couple of laps of the single track. One with boltboi, and one with john. Although apparently john was there for both laps, but i never saw him on the first one. It is such a twisty little track and always good fun. | ||
Friday Mar 7 | ||
| Roadie (commute) 1:00:00 [3]25 km (2:24 / km) | ||
| slept:6.0 shoes: Mongoose Roadie | ||
| Oh today last weekend caught up with me in a big way. I felt great in the morning riding to work. Even sent john an sms saying how much i was looking fwd to the beach session. After a long day at work i struggled so much riding to the beach - at one point one of those speed-alert things flashed "22kph....okay" at me, which was so demoralising. Got to the beach in the middle of the session and couldn't make my legs move so i made my self useful shouting motivating stuff at the punters. I think they were very grateful. | ||
| Run (beach) 20:00 [3] | ||
| shoes: Feet | ||
| Beach jog. Stopped halfway for a chat. | ||
Thursday Mar 6 | ||
| Run 43:40 [3]7.3 km (5:59 / km) | ||
| slept:7.0 shoes: Retro green Asics | ||
| Early morning run with Vera, through UWA and Kings Park. | ||
| Note | ||
| Funny, when i was dreaming about my MTB last night i must have logged onto AP in my sleep....
PS to Jen's subconscious: what is an "imprinted gosling"?? John, perhaps you would know?

| Home again via the shops. Had to get clothes for john to wear for my cousin's wedding. Although it will be a who's who of triathlon, it is still not right to turn up in bike shorts. Met up with mum, which seemed far more sensible than taking john. | ||

| Sick today. Lovesick like a strongly imprinted gosling pining for its mother. Oh Rocky Mountain MTB, how I long to ride you, to admire your geometry, to lube your joints, to feel the caress of your tread on the sweet single trail once again.
Bike bike bike, that's what I like. xJ

| Felt ok when i got up, ok warming up, ok for the first chunk of the ride, then we hit a small hill, which hurt. I kept up ok til freo and along mccabe - i think the pace was down a bit because there were no maverick orienteers pushing the pace off the front (Where were all the orienteers today?? John I know about, he just piked when he found out that it was dark at 5.30 in the morning. Boltboi swore he would be there, and wil said he would start coming too. Or something, perhaps i misheard...) I was hurting so decided to skip the golf course hill. Rode through mosman park and up devil's elbow. Group hadn't caught me so i pottered through to christchurch. Still hadn't caught me and i was enjoying the ride more now so i kept going on my own. So I won the UWA sprint!
Award for the biggest tool of the day goes to the drop-in from the chase group. Someone asked why he was riding with the slow group (i think he probably told them to, so he had a chance to answer) and he said, loudly "well, i'm a bit fatigued from the hills in the pemberton road race on sunday so i thought i'd ride with this group today. Its better than staying in bed, and won't be much harder". Nice way to put down everyone around you. Unfortunately noone pushed him off his bike.

| Thought it would be dismal - not sore or puffed but couldn't push. Only thing that kept me running solidly was boltboi, i mean, saz running one pace behind me. She was doing it easily, then got bored of my trudging and passed me on durston. Given how my legs felt, only 30sec slower than last time is much better than expected. | ||

| Karri Cup
Started with an 8km paced stage - 150 impatient punters behind an erratically driven 4wd (was meant to be at 20kph but the gps says 15-36. Was interesting! Then they lead us onto the gravel, honked their horn and drove away. About 5min later most people had realised this was the official race start and by the time we hit the single track the rest had cottoned on too.
| MTB race (1st timed stage) 1:49:00 [5]28 km (3:54 / km) | ||
| shoes: Rocky Mountain Instinct | ||
| This one was really hard work - mostly short steep ups and downs with some creek crossings, soft sand, and also a token lap of the Boorara race track. That was good fun - i caught the roadie chick who was in 3rd at that stage - she indicated left, saw a short steep hill, stuck up her hand and shouted "slowing!" then rode into a rock and fell off. Swore at me when i asked if she was ok so i rode off and never saw her again, til she rolled into the finish 15min after me demanding medical attention for the graze on her elbow. She did, to her credit, finish the day, wearing her bandage and shouting "rock!" "log!" "left!" at useful intervals.
Sally passed me early on, i caught her on the single track too but never got past her. She had 'listen to your heart' printed on the back of her shorts. So i did, for ages, but it didn't help. She was still 30sec ahead at the finish line. Tough stage. Felt ok though at the end and had a huge long rest cos i started in the early group with saz (who got a flat on the start line, poor thing, had to start the ride with the sweep rider, then slowly pass punters all morning) and wil (who rode well, and smiled all day - said 'i thought racing would be hard but its not nearly as hard as a training ride with tooms) So. Finished stage 1 in 3rd. Steph was 15min ahead, she was amazingly strong.
| MTB race (2nd cruise stage) 1:15:00 [3]18 km (4:10 / km) | ||
| shoes: Rocky Mountain Instinct | ||
| Rode to the lunch spot with saz and wil (john, dalto and rhys had started in the later group). Loved the cruise stages - a bit hilly but we just pottered along and the forest was beautiful. | ||
| MTB race (2nd timed stage) 1:17:00 [5]32 km (2:24 / km) | ||
| shoes: Rocky Mountain Instinct | ||
| This stage was much faster, mostly undulating fire trail and farm boundary tracks. Sally was much too strong again - i kept her in sight for about 3/4 of it then lost her, didn't catch her on the tricky single track at the end either. Got stuck behind some roadies for a while which is so frustrating! They won't even let you past if you say 'please'. Legs stiff to start with and i didn't have a lot of power on the hills but kept reasonably strong. Bit sad to pass john who's back had given in and he had slowed right down and was ready to give up. Didn't see many people, it strung out a lot. Occasionally someone would pass and have a chat. Finished almost 2min behind Sally, unlikely to make that up in the 10km final stage! Steph put another 15min into us. 4th place now 20min behind which took the pressure off a bit | ||
| MTB (3rd cruise stage) 1:07:00 [3]15 km (4:28 / km) | ||

| Rode this one with John, who was still really sore and unkeen. I was a bit tired too - at one point i stopped to wait for him at the top of a hill, and didn't notice when he caught up and rode past. It was a lovely ride, or would have been in better circumstances, through the karri forest | ||
| MTB race (3rd timed stage) 34:00 [5]9 km (3:47 / km) | ||

| Fun little track up the hill and into the round-tuit loop then through the forest back to the rec ground to the finish. They set us off in groups of 10. I rode with Jude and her entourage, a couple of roadies and 2 kids. Me and the two 11y-olds rode away from the rest of the pack in the technical single-track, which was quite satisfying, then the 11y-olds rode away from me. A bit of a pattern with me but man they are fast, it is great to watch. They did the race in a team of 2, finished second in the juniors, but would have podium-placed in the men's teams too. Ha, the male teams on the podium were pretty happy to be told that :) | ||
| Note | ||
| So overall it was a lot of fun. Luckily with some encouraging words from dalto (after i just rode on from the last cruise stage into the last race stage) john had some food and got his mojo back, raced the last leg hard and came in smiling. Wil still smiling. Poor saz had a hard 2nd race stage and left to get back to perth in time. Dalto rode really well, so did rhys. Everyone happy. Dinner was good. Shower queues were long. I got to climb a hay bale to have my hand shaken (no prizes for this one- they said, "we shall send you certificates. Definitely. Within the next two weeks we shall mail out the certificates for this race and last year too". so i'm not holding my breath for a certificate!)
Came 3rd in the end, only 2.5min behind 2nd which i'm really happy with. Steph came 7th overall! Wow... I finished 32nd overall (of about 290). John 10 places and 10min ahead. I will catch him next time...

| They have a dirt crit on the saturday night to make the weekend seem more like a festival and less like a single race. Only about 8 of the 22 solo women entered. I managed to lead for about 3 laps after Steph fell off her bike halfway around lap 1, then she reeled me in and i stayed with her for the other 4. Thus starting the main event with a 5sec penalty. (To add to the 15min she won by in every other stage!) | ||
