cycling (road) 2:04:00 [3] +192m

road ride at the bend. 30 min of tempo.
finished in the dark. need lights.

good morning yoga

yoga (studio) 1:00:00 [1]

yoga for athletes class.
some long stretches, focus on spine and hips.

new class - instructor is just so so. maybe she'll settle into it soon. potential to be a great class.

Sunday Sep 28

cycling race (mtn) 4:02:00 [4] 44.0 mi (5:30 / mi) +923m 5:10 / mi

black bear rampage!
great race - few breathing issues!

nutrition & hydration great. no cramping. no bonking.

details to come...

Saturday Sep 27

yoga (studio) 45 [1]

short power yoga class this morning.
felt awesome - just want i needed (mind + body) before a race.
then the stupid boy stole my chi.
i've been tense all day now. damnit.

Friday Sep 26

yoga (home) 15:00 [1]

good morning yoga

cycling (road) 1:04:00 [3] +80m

easy'ish road, with some tempo thrown in. oh, and some gravel due to the "chip paving" crap they have on the roads. lovely.

anyways, felt good. need to hook up my cadence monitor i won!!

Thursday Sep 25

yoga (home) 10:00 [1]

good morning yoga

swim/row (pool) 1:00:00 [3] 1.25 mi (48:00 / mi)

unfortunately it was windy, so i had to stay inside for the swim. i actually did some drills tonight - not big time, as there's too much i don't know, but it helped to keep me focused and to actually track how many freakin laps of the 25m pool i did. (2000m specifically).

i saw a flyer about classes at the Y in the mornings... 6-7. stroke conditioning and technique. might have to check these out sometime so i don't feel so sloppy! i do feel i'm getting a little better though.

Wednesday Sep 24

strength (core) 6:00 [1]

cheryl's planks

running (road) 38:00 [3]

morning run on the road. temps 58. I AM REJUVENATED! oh and the legs/lungs felt good too!

running (trail) 1:43:00 [3] 9.0 mi (11:27 / mi)
shoes: Velocity 1

from SMMHS. SJ course.

i had the new monitor still hooked up, so i was going to have some fun with tonight's run (super curious to see what the numbers look like!) i started off "normal" and kept up with people for a lot longer this time. fell a bit back on some hills, still getting in my groove. some downhills came and my feet handled them well (getting them used to technical running again did not happen overnight!) after a solid 30 min, i started pushing it more. my breathing was ok.. like last night, it was consistent. one spot it got a bit crazy, but i sorta did that on purpose (hard push up a hill near the end).

a fantastic run!!! i almost feel like normal!!

Tuesday Sep 23

running (road) 30:00 [3]

nice morning run in the cool weather. standard route, but it felt better today.

cycling hills (road) 55:00 [4]

so today i got a holter monitor put on to check out the heart. i am to wear it for 24hrs, so i wanted to get a hard bike in. i had a mtg after work so i didn't get on the bike till 7, but got in a good hour on the hills i haven't been to since pre-pbville. the good news: i actually felt pretty ok! still got out of breath quicker than normal, but the effort felt sustained. and really, not too far off than when i did these 2 months ago. (this means that i might actually still race on sunday!)

halfway thru though, the monitor started beeping. actually, it was more like 1 long neverending beep. a call to the hospital had me on my way there tonight to get a new one. once there, the tech found that the sticker things were placed totally wrong on my chest, which would give an inaccurate reading. so the whole thing was redone and i have another 24hrs (without showering!! they'll love me at work). so tomorrow i'll get in lots of running and really try to attack some hills. quite interested to see what the numbers look like.

oh, and when she hooked up the faulty one to see what it recorded today, it only got the first 50min of the day, so no hill repeats! :(

Monday Sep 22

yoga (home) 15:00 [1]

good morning yoga

strength (core) 22:30 [2]

ATW for 35

i split up the pushups, doing half of those, then half plank leg lift, then the other half of both. i did all the pushups full! is this ok?

swim/row (open water) 45:00 [3] 1.0 mi (45:01 / mi)
weight:131.6lbs

open water days are numbered, so i took the opportunity to get one in since a friend was looking for a swimming buddy. no real drills per say, but the choppy surf had to count for something. it was definitely challenging, but fun too! i am still trying to convince myself swimming ain't so bad...

Sunday Sep 21

yoga (studio) 1:30:00 [2]

today was officially a rest day, but mentally i needed something (stupid guys). so i checked out the new yoga studio a friend is opening up and jumped into a class. just what the dr ordered. felt much better afterwards. also nice to get some of my poses corrected - after doing it at home for so long, some professional advice was needed!

Saturday Sep 20

swim/row race (flatwater paddle) 1:05:00 [4] 5.0 mi (13:00 / mi)

TN River Blueway Canoe & Kayak Race
upstream then down
headwind both ways i swear!

ended up not pairing up with the great paddler in the superfast boat, instead filling in on another tandem team in a big plastic sit on top that seemed to have an anchor already pitched. it was a great workout and fun though. 3rd place, recreational tandem.

run around the park

strength (core) 26:00 [2]

ATW for 35

yeah, not on the schedule. but hope it's ok to add in an extra core workout?? trying to get in the groove of meeting a friend twice a week in the mornings to do stuff.

also threw in some walking lunges. (40)

cycling (mountain bike) 2:14:00 [2] 15.0 mi (8:56 / mi)

raccoon mtn
estimated mileage

counter clockwise loop, skipping the rocks. took it easy. faster when gravity helped, slower when i felt things going uphill. technically i sucked when people were around. otherwise, it was a nice solo ride. got caught by the dark though... dang.

Wednesday Sep 17

yoga (home) 15:00 [1]

good morning yoga

running (road) 42:00 [2]

around the hood.

running (trail) 1:25:00 [3] 8.0 mi (10:37 / mi)
shoes: Velocity 1

guess on mileage...

run up at nolan on the stumpjump course
felt pretty good on normal stuff. on some of the big rollers/hills, my breathing felt strained, so i immediately went to a walk. was in control the whole time though. a pretty good run despite. my legs & feet are getting happier.

Tuesday Sep 16

strength (core) 6 [1]

cheryl's planks

running (road) 25:00 [2] 2.5 mi (10:00 / mi) +64m 9:16 / mi

easy run. 2 hills - kept the pace slow and felt ok on them.

cycling (commuting) 25:00 [2] 6.0 mi (4:10 / mi) +65m 4:02 / mi

biking to work and home

cycling (road) 2:04:00 [3] 32.5 mi (3:49 / mi) +127m 3:46 / mi

tues night ride, riding from my house for extra time. barely made it back before nightfall. rode alone. felt much better than last week, although still not "normal". did not do the mtn climb. felt pretty consistent throughout, although tired at the end.

Monday Sep 15

swim/row (open water swim) 32:00 [3] 0.5 mi (1:03:58 / mi)

estimate on distance & time, but i think i was close. felt pretty good... besides being sloppy :)

yoga (home) 20:00 [1]

morning yoga

strength (ATW) 28:00 [3]

ATW for 35.

did with a friend, so time not as efficient (but she loved them!)
still sucking on the pushups, but did more before dropping to knees. (25)

Sunday Sep 14

running (trail) 1:40:00 [2] 10.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Velocity 1

Norris Dam in Knox.

we started on the "warmup trails" - 45 min, mostly flat with some small rollers. felt ok, but easily fell behind when i was in my "safe" zone. when the group hit the hills, i went back towards the car and did the 2mile flat gravel loop 3 times until they got back. i tried to have a moderate pace here, although hard to tell timing since i had no watch :(

so, my goal was to get some time/mileage under me, but not stress my lungs too much. mission accomplished. but i could tell that i was probably at my max, which is quite a big bummer.

Saturday Sep 13

cycling (mtn) 1:30:00 [3] 6.0 mi (15:00 / mi)

haw ridge trails

totally estimated time & distance

i was led to believe someone in our group knew the trail system; but no. so we just hit the trails "hoping" for the best. we got to the first trail split... and a minute later it was quite obvious we made the wrong decision. straight up. i mean, unrideable up. another intersection, another bad choice. this kept going until we finally ran into a trailhead with a map. turns out we were deep within the center of the park, filled with expert trails. ha! this wouldn't have been so bad if i didn't have 2 beginners with me. even i had to walk a lot... i think they were in hell.

anyways, the workout was off an on. i tried to get in some good riding when i could , then i'd recover (my lungs) while i waited for the others. i was miffed that i actually had to recover. definitely get out of breath too easily, then it takes longer to recover. ugh.

Friday Sep 12

yoga (at home) 12:00 [1]

good morning yoga.

Thursday Sep 11

strength (core) 6:00 [1]

cheryl's planks

yoga (home) 12:00 [1]

good morning yoga

swim/row (paddle) 55:00 [2]

trying to take it easy, so i did a paddle since i still have the boat from last weekend. nice 30 minutes up river, 25min down. not much flow .... and i had a headwind both directions. lovely.

DR report: chest xray clear. breathing tests normal. yeah, i'm perfectly healthy. HA! wtf. so he gives me 2 new inhalers to try out, twice a day. i'm not happy with the diagnosis and don't think pumping my body with lots of drugs is the answer. i have an appt with my cardiologist on the 22 and from previous talks, he seems more in tune with "the athlete". i'll hopefully get some good recommendations from him.

until then, i'll play things by ear. felt better today, so i think i can start up on some running/riding this weekend. maybe give it a few days before throwing in some intensity, then do so carefully. i have a mtn bike race on the 28th i'd still like to do!

Wednesday Sep 10

Note
(rest day)

hardly slept. breathing still not great. took the day off.

Tuesday Sep 9

cycling (road) 1:30:00 [2] 26.0 mi (3:28 / mi)

i rode by myself and kept it my pace so i could keep the breathing under control. i did, but i was still worked over. going to the dr asap.

strength (core) 24:00 [2]

ATW for 35
still just 1/2 the pushups were full. grrr.

yoga (yoga) 15:00 [1]

good morning yoga poses

Monday Sep 8

yoga (yoga) 15:00 [1]

good morning yoga poses

swim/row (pool) 30:00 [2]

i knew i wouldn't be able to do the assigned workout - no watch to keep track of HR + time. plus still not breathing ok. so i hit the pool to just splash around. it was amazing how out of breath i got every 50-100m i'd have to rest and catch my breath. i was pretty tired after 30 minutes and called it quits. when it feels like you have a 20lb weight on your chest normally, the pressure under water is even greater.

conveniently as i was toweling off, the pool closed due to a freak storm that blew in. :P

Sunday Sep 7

cycling race (mtn) 1:04:00 [4] 12.0 mi (5:20 / mi)

RACE! Tsali Challenge, Team Relay.

i had the bike leg, which was the last one. our paddler came in just a few minutes after the lead female team (who had a ringer Kiwi rockstar in a carbon downriver boat). their team looked pretty stacked, but Jaclyn (our runner) found some speed despite her tired transrockies legs, and came out first out of the woods. on the bike i go, like a bat outta hell. i did get caught about 2/3 through. we rode together for a bit and i controlled the speed - no need to blow up with her right there. finally she passed and i tried to keep up, but she was just better at the one technical downhill and zoomed ahead. i did get close to her on 2 hills, but she'd pull away. once we got to the gravel road (signalling about 3 miles till the end), i let'r rip. never caught up, but was only 30 seconds down. not bad!

however, after the finish line, my breathing deteriorated (maybe the adrenaline kept me going before). it gets heavy, then just gets worse and worse and i can't get caught up. then a bit of anxiety sets in too. it was good to be around people this time, but i should have gotten a medic since they were there. oh well. it took about 30 min before i could breathe normally and talk. thought i was ok a few hours later to drive home, but after 15 min, i realized i shouldn't be behind a wheel and had to call one of my friends at the race to drive me back to TN. sux. the whole rest of the day it felt like i had a 20lb weight on my chest.

Saturday Sep 6

swim/row race (paddle) 27:00 [4] 2.5 mi (10:48 / mi)

RACE! Tsali Challenge, solo

write more later; ended up 4th, less than a minute behind 3rd place (who is a rockstar!!)

running race (trail) 42:00 [4] 4.5 mi (9:20 / mi) vdot: 32.8

cycling race (mtn) 1:08:00 [4] 12.0 mi (5:40 / mi)

Thursday Sep 4

strength (core) 6:00 [2]

cheryl's planks.
45sec x 4 poses x 2 sets

running intervals (track) 1:00:00 [4] 6.25 mi (9:36 / mi)

"speed work" at the track.

800 - 4.03
(400) - 2.35
1200 - 6.15

1200 - 6.26
(400)- 2.46
800 - 4.12
(400) - 2.37
400 - 1.59

it's interesting to see the splits. could never figure out how to do this on my watch :) enter the amazing iphone. so i had to stop, bend down, and hit lap each time (no adjustments made to above times). anyways, i think i was somewhat consistent. definitely not fast, but i felt solid the entire time and my breathing was under control. speed will come in time. i think.

Wednesday Sep 3

running (trail) 1:40:00 [3] 8.0 mi (12:30 / mi)
shoes: Velocity 1

route:
nolan - mushroom rock - swinging bridge - along the ridge. stopped before the last descent to suck creek. (and back!)

guessed at distance. not sure of elevation. (i'll be missing my watch until it gets fixed!)

i kept up with people until the bridge. (ok, some slower people with me, but i wasn't last :P) i took it easy on the climb up to the ridge, as i didn't want to get too out of breath. on the way back i slowed it down a bit, but still felt steady, which i think is my goal right now.

in all, a good run. i'm making fw progress!

Tuesday Sep 2

cycling (road) 1:30:00 [3] 28.0 mi (3:13 / mi)

red bank loop, no climb.

started off too hard (tried to stay with the pack). haha, not enough lung for that! rested a bit, then rode with a few people at a solid pace for most of the time. kept it flat/rolling. lungs needed to recover from yesterday's mishap. it went pretty well i think.

strength (core) 21:00 [2]

ATW for 35

only half of the pushups were full.... gotta get these nailed again!

Monday Sep 1

cycling (mtn bike) 3:45:00 [3] 28.0 mi (8:02 / mi)

tanasi trails
guessed at distance

pre-ride of the black bear course with hoff, shannon & star. it was a great ride actually - i'm feeling SO much better on the descents!

of course all good things come to an end. on the last half mile of singletrack my breathing was tested on a series of climbs. i got off to recover. stood there. still could not recover. inhaler didn't work (as in, not operational). i got a little panicky and of course my friends were now no where in sight. took me awhile, but i hiked it out and was able to cruise in. SUCKS!
