cycling (road) 2:13:00 [2] +227m
tues night ride. rode from home.
(will figure mileage later)
it was good, although no one was around due to threat of a storm. the first hour was ok. then the raw spot reallly started to hurt. towards the end i was standing a lot. :(
cycling (mtn) 1:30:00 [2] 10.6 mi (8:29 / mi) +366m 7:40 / mi
booker t. 2 loops.
ok, i know i was supposed to do a slow road ride... but since i was a little short yesterday i figured i could throw a little in. plus i was meeting someone to get a bunch of hammer products for the race, so it was a worthy ride.
fun little trail - first time here. very rooty, which meant super slick after yesterday's rain. i led so i could control the pace. i didn't push anything - tried to maintain a slow & steady pace.
cycling (road) 1:24:00 [2] 23.25 mi (3:37 / mi) +91m 3:34 / mi
thrasher pike to bakewell and back
so here's my easy slow road ride. it was HARD - because that damn seat on my mtn bike has now proceeded to tear off a chunk of skin on my sitbone. lovely. now i'm scrambling for something new to ride for the race - i can borrow (a newer version) of the saddle i recently retired - my butt is used to sitting on it for super long rides so it might be the safest bet.
cycling (mtn) 4:00:00 [3] 40.0 mi (6:00 / mi) +924m 5:36 / mi
not sure of distance... total guess
rode from Camp Ocoee (HQ of the race I put on in Oct) and explored some new forest service roads. didn't get any long extended climbs but it was rolling constantly. unfort a little shorter than anticipated. i even did a 30min addition, riding the road to where we ate lunch (my riding partner drove my car). wanted to double back on some of the FSR, but solo riding out here just isn't a good thing. esp when the bears are cruising around. (we scared one out of a tree, which scared the shit out of me!)
high points:
- bike felt GREAT. amazing how smooth the wheels are! and the shifting is smooth like butter.
- my body was SUPER sore from FMJ. hopefully it simulated the latter part of the race where my body will be hurting. but i think i still had a decent pace. in general, the body felt good.
- eating/nutrition totally fine.
low points:
- not happy with my saddle. think i'll bring 1 or 2 others with me and test in the next 2 weeks.
- the knife in the shoulder pain surfaced at hour 3 today. WTF!
- not thrilled that i never put new pedals on and can use my new shoes. (just not enough time to break 'em in, so i'll suffer with my old stuff. which makes my toes numb after awhile.)
cycling tempo (road) 1:02:00 [4] 16.75 mi (3:42 / mi) +92m 3:38 / mi
tempo ride on the road at raccoon
12min warm up, 40 min tempo, 10 min cooldown (added some one legged drills to this ending. i think i'm getting better!)
ALSO, picked up my mtn bike with HOTT new wheels! god they're gorgeous. and 1.2lbs LIGHTER than my old set. WOW! i'm going to be so fast now. and look fabulous. ;)
strength (FMJ) 36:00 [4]
full metal jacket.
ok, i went through that period of slacking funk, but i'm back on top of it and found a place to do these. wow. i'm going to be seriously paying for the slacking tomorrow. this workout is killer. i loved it in a sick sort of way. i can't wait to drag my friends into this. yeah, some of the moves are silly. the kids at the playground thought i was weird. who knows what the ultimate frisbee players thought. but who cares. i'll eat them for dessert. (the green berets are breakfast.) although it would have been nice if some of the hotties had helped me recover after the last sprint :)
i will admit i did not do item #3 on part #1. i was a bit confused with the jumping lunges on #2 (and think i did #3 instead). but my body just couldn't take anymore. i was face planting the pushups after 80. (no knees!) 120 was not in my vocabulary. maybe next time i'll do 3 sets of all instead of 4?
i think i might hate you tomorrow, but i'll get over it.
cycling (spin bike) 2:00 [3]
yeah, you read it right. spin bike. nasty storm blew in right at the end of the day. power out, tree fallen across my street... no road ride tonight. so to the gym i went and had a pretty solid spin session (although i forgot my ipod. bad move!) i worked hard, doing 15 min climbs every 30 min. i only did 2 hrs (not 2.5), but i was DEAD at the end of the time. i'm still whooped. more so than i've been in a long time. so a good workout despite the last minute change.
strength (core) 24:30 [4]
ATW for 35 (i think that is my highest rep yet!)
cranked it out - big difference between doing them in the morning and later in the day when i'm more awake :)
still, my pushup strength has deteriorated. half were full/ half on knees.
Note
got out of work when i wanted, jetted over to the lake to swim. raindrops? where did this come from? i waited with 3 other cars of swimmers, thinking the blue sky we could see across the way would head to us. well, no. instead we were given a lightning show to entertain us. lovely. it stuck around for a bit too (knocking off the power in the grocery store. nice.) workout day ruined.
cycling (road) 2:55:00 [3] +267m
finally, a good ride! went from home to the battlefield and all around. will try to figure out distance from the guys. great ride, consistent pace, mostly level 2. legs felt totally fine, which i was worried about after climbing so much in the evening yesterday.
someone, please send some nice weather this way. i'm suffocating! and my a/c is broken :(
cycling (mtn) 46:00 [3] 8.8 mi (5:14 / mi) +314m 4:42 / mi
short day so far, eh? today was bound for failure. my initial ride plans, doing the big frog loop at the ocoee (perfect race simulation) was canned because the people i was doing it were starting at 7am. (i just could not leave my house by 5am). my back up plans went into action - a day at raccoon, mixing up long road climbs with some singletrack. still a solid day...
i began with a fast descent so i could start the day with a killer climb. at the bottom my drivetrain was acting funky... just not engaging. i fiddled, and it worked. hmmm.... i had a good climb up, and took a brief break in the shaded lot before moving to the dirt. saw a friend with bike wrenching knowledge so i asked him what was up. on cue, the bike acted up again for him. and just wouldn't get back to normal. turns out my rear hub is GONE. dead. no good. i knew it was on it's way out (and really expected to have my new wheelset yesterday), but had no idea its death would be so quick.
so, here i am. it is just about the hottest part of the day. 94 expected. air quality is shitty - smog/haze. lovely training weather.
i'm taking a brief break, then will go out on my road bike for some more action (friend gets off work at 4 so we'll get a few hours in together).
between this, the bee stings, and some general scheduling/work conflicts lately, i've been in a funk. i hope it gets out of my system soon.
cycling (road) 2:15:00 [3] 37.0 mi (3:39 / mi)
not totally sure of distance.
riding the river gorge race loop, minus the climb up raccoon.
good ride with jim & carol... pushed the hills. jim commented that my climbing was looking good - steady pace, higher cadence, smooth. :) yeah! felt pretty good out there today. happy that i can see!!
Note
(injured) (rest day)
woke up, eye nearly swollen shut. *lovely* can't put in my contacts which renders me useless. went home from work early. hopefully going to bed early. sigh.
crossing my fingers i'm halfway normal tomorrow.
strength (core) 26:00 [1]
ATW for 30
uhh... yeah, it's been a few weeks. pushups & side planks hurt!
running (trail) 1:00:00 [3] 4.75 mi (12:38 / mi)
hilly trail run from the whortons house on lookout. this was partially for a story the local paper is doing on our trail club. not 5 min into the video shoot, something with a big stinger nails me. left lower eye socket. seriously. hurt like a bitch. (can they photoshop that out?) not much swelling (yet), so we continued on our post-interview run.
then, not 30 min into that one, BAM, we run through another nest. i get stung again on my cheek (um, not the one near my eye). the two guys behind me both got nailed 4 times each, so i guess i'm lucky.
that sorta killed the rest of my day though. had brought the bike for that race pace session. just couldn't deal with much at that point. yeah, i'm a wimp :)
cycling race (road) 1:22:00 [5] 42 km (1:57 / km)
chattanooga waterfront triathlon
did the relay, bike portion. we won the female relay division!
5 min before my jumping on the bike, the sky opened up and it was pouring. yucko. the course was simple - a there and back with minimal turns. the problem was it was long swooping ups and downs (not sure of elevation) on a main highway. luckily i avoided oil slicks and stayed upright (was nervous though!)
i used my road bike with no aero bars and just cranked away. when i got off, i could hardly move - my sit bones seemed bruised and the muscles all around were cramping. i couldn't sit, bend over & stretch, or anything! serious pain (ok, maybe not pain but discomfort) for hours. i'm sure this is attributed to the fact i was in my drops the whole time, which i seldom do, so my positioning on the bike was way different. but still, that sit bone pain is what i experienced on day 3 of my leadville trip, so that is troublesome. (same pain; diff bike & diff saddles). hmmm....
i was about 1.5min faster this year on the bike than last... surprising, as i thought i would have kicked last years out of the water. maybe i'll attribute it to the bit of conservation due to wet roads??
cycling hills (road) 2:31:00 [3] 28.5 mi (5:18 / mi)
hills at raccoon!
started off in the rain, but luckily it ended quick. the first descent was wet (ie. slick and slow). things dried out for the second big descent.
did 3 reservoir loops (each has 1 "decent" climb, but only about .6 mile); then 1 ascent up elder mtn rd and 1 ascent up raccoon mtn road (lake access).
a bit sore from yesterday's run and seemed to get a bit lightheaded. but it was muggier than hell out.
running (trail) 1:22:00 [2] 7.0 mi (11:43 / mi)
guild trail (twice) from falls to ochs, plus whiteside and alley trails.
started in the rain but it let up early on.
felt STIFF! i haven't run in what, 2 weeks? eek...
the positive: i picked a quart of blackberries after. still a bit tart, but the bushes are about to explode!
