Orienteering race 1:16:45 [5]

Same technique as Middle, but more confidence led to stronger/smoother pace - very clean on #1-5.

#6. Just past trail, immediate 4 m rock face really bothered me - even way to close to trail. Carefully drifted forward - found big 'pond' - hoped and attacked - yes! Lost 3 minutes.

#8. 2 km leg. Went right of line through woods; mild swamp; sloppy swamp; open woods (caught and passed Linda Kohn); trail run beyond big bend; bearing to knoll; swamp; white knoll; swamp; didn't see cross-trail but it rock-face/boulders head on. Robbie + 1 barrel by also find trail. I ran without pace count and left trail came way too fast - confused. Drifted straight quite a ways - couldn't distinguish big vs. medium trails - seemed to be too many trail junctions. Turned left; stopped at trail jjunction again; saw huge tree; checked map, yes, 'distinct tree' symbol but 2 of them - yes, 2 are there! Carefully took trails to #8. Great leg Mike! lost 3-5 minutes.

Running warm up/down 13:00 [1]

Two easy warm-up jogs.

Orienteering 35:00 [2]

Picked up clump of 6 controls. Claimed a '2' intensity: jogged in; lugged 6 ident stands out:)

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2]

Jogged first half to start.

Walking warm up/down 13:00 [1]

Walked briskly 2nd half to Start.

Orienteering race 44:01 [5]

Middle Distance at Rocky Ridge. Very careful to pace count, check off features and plan route. Only messed up not knowing where I hit trail network on way to #9 - then wandered - lost 3 minutes. Cautious, but excellent to maintain map contact onthis terrain - built my confidence.

Orienteering 1:05:00 [2]

Wlaked and jogged on Model event. Very ragged at first, then got feel for map. Trust rock; one-line contour features are 'invisible. Lesson 1: this map IS 'doable'. Lesson 2: be careful out there!

Running warm up/down 10:00 [2]

Orienteering race 16:00 [4]

NAOC Sprint at McMaster. Alexander Gebhard had a hard time finding McMaster, but Sprint went well. Flat and fast - looked ahead on nearly all legs - no bobbles. Chose popular left route to #6, Walter was 15 sec faster around right. Not used to Srint pace - probably could have pushed just a bit harder.
