Orienteering race 2:05:27 [4]

Great weather for Short Possum. Seemed cold and windy at start - put on 4 layers, dropped 2 at #5. Even hands warmed up quickly.

With Short, Trot, and Green overlapping in many ways, I've never been passed by so many runners (at least 30 I believe). Still finished the Short 3rd overall Matt Barret and Jessica Plunkett. (1st, 3rd, and 2nd male in the first three Short Trots!)

S-1: Looked like possible skip but hadn't looked at course yet. Mass start - time to run! Started running south along field - hmm, in first and nearly alone - that's weird! Hmm, rest were reading their maps! Down to trail. Intended to skirt spur left but climbed it. As I crossed spur - saw 'everyone else' nearing control. They'd gone due east and saved climb and distance. Bad route choice but lost at most 1 minute.

1-2: Went too far on trail, came right back - very minor bobble.

3-4-5-6: Clean. I'd looked for skips. 5 was feasible but 16 or 17 stood out. 10 saved most distance but was all field running - very easy and fast. 4-6 wasn't that great and 5-6 was nice run on top.

6-7: Came down hill way too far west. Longer and slow going. Bit confused. Lose 1+ minute. Distracted by fast but erratic guy in bright O-suit.

8-13: Clean. Low left on 8; follow crowd around spur on 9 worked well.

13-14: 14 looked challenging - did not see any safe route. Chose power line (I was expecting 'paved road'). I left at stream and contoured. Lots of big boulders in thick cedars. Very confused and alone. Pushed west. Hit unmapped mountain bike trail. Saw Fritz+ go into control 20 m away - lucky! Lost 2-3 minutes perhaps. Looking ahead, skip 16 or 17 seemed pretty equal - chose 17.

15-16-18: Alone at last (first time except for cedars). Still reading map and executing well.

18-19: Saw several runners (Green and Orange?) - no one seemed to be Short Trot. Tried to maintain pace - cramping bad on 2 falls. Stream looked like it could be tough to cross. Angled right to bridge. Stream was very shallow. Lost a bit of time perhaps to 'straight'.

19-20: Cautious - bit confusing - very tired. Okay.

20-F: Very steep. Half way up hill, saw Nathan and Melissa at bottom. I "knew" I could hold them off. Did!

Looking at splits, Jessica beat me by 5 minutes, but we played tag a lot early and we were tied at 14. Nathan skipped 5, building a lead from 30s to 8 minutes. But I gained 15 minutes when I skipped 17 - looks like Nathan struggled with both 16 and 17 where Melissa caught him. Both gained 3 minutes on me coming in, but I held them off.

Inside left thigh cramped on drive home. Only quads hurt in evening.

Overall - very pleased with 2nd place and no big errors on hard 2-hour push. Looking again at map, I realized that my tiredness (party from Saturday event) led to 'tunnel vision'. I chose a route, stuck to it, good execution, but I wasn't looking ahead and wasn't looking for alternatives (eg better route to 7; straighter on 4-5; use rock face on stream to attack #14).

Orienteering race 33:47 [4]

Great campus for a sprint with a well-designed course. Seemed to harder later in race - tough challenge! Over 50 starts.

Solid run - 12th of 17 in over 40 male - tough competition. Not much pace, one error, several bobbles. I read map very well (in terms of special features such as underpasses) and looked ahead for numerous sets of controls.

1-8: Ran clean. 4-5: Went right, didn't see left. With 4 at top of stairs, look pretty equal.

8-9: Saw left via stair; right via zig-zag. Chose 'clever' right route. Walker went left and got there at same time. Bobble.

10-11: Got 2/3 past building on right side - hesitated - "Missed Walkway?" No, finished leg. Bobble. Did ignore lots of basketball fans streaming towards KU victory over #2 OSU.

11-12: Tempted to go south around building. Did not want to lose elevation. Went north on west-side. Went left of targeted building, then parallel to road. Worked well. Did not see approach from south (even though I chose it as way to exit 12).

12-13: South looked clever and faster. Fran left just ahead of me and went left. She got to 13 just ahead of me - I was surprised I hadn't passed her.

13-14: Found 'straight south' route. Hit parking lot then guard-rail - What? Where am I? Didn't expect it to be unmapped and drop-off was very steep. Wandered left ended up east of 15 until I relocated. Saw Fran leaving 14. Lost 1.5-2 minutes? Being tired, confusion led me to wander, not to stop, look around, and verify location (building near #13 had not moved).

14-15-16: 15 clean. 16 circle looked confusing, so chose right. Worked well but extra distance cost 20-30 seconds.

16-F: Clean finish - pleased I found best route to 17.

Running warm up/down 6:00 [2]

2 short warm-ups - definitely helped.

Machines 18:00 [2]

Cut short at 6 machines to meet with colleague for a 'goodbye' lunch. 10 years ago, Mikela and I were part of the 'lunch bunch' - the few faculty who would venture to cafeteria to eat lunch.

Stair step 24:00 [3]

75/110 spm. Felt easier than expected for 24 minutes. With no running in past week, that's a bit weird.
