Canoeing 2:00:00 [3]

Mark was tired and it was a hot, sunny day. Only 4 miles on the Jacks Fork from Eminence to Shawnee Creek. No capsizing today with similar challenges of logs and rocks. A nice save when we turned a corner around an island and found a tree horizontal across the stream at about 3 feet. Stopped and lined the canoe through.

Walking 40:00 [1]

On the way home, we stopped to meander around Maramec Springs Park near St. James -- owned by the James Foundation. We walked the spring trail [seeing lots of bred rainbows], lots of time in its history museum of the ironworks etc, and drove the Historic Drive. Museum: diorama of ironworks was excellent; Native Americans and slaves' roles were included.

Canoeing 3:30:00 [3]

8 miles from Alley Spring to Eminence on the Jacks Fork. We capsized once -- a log turned us, then hit a rock sideways. Fairly easy recovery. With a weaker paddler, leader Mark W capsized twice and struggled to get canoe out -- so we cut it down from a 12-mile day. Water was navigable but low -- quite a few 'minor' obstacles - rocks and logs. Great weather.

Walking 1:00:00 [3]

In all my stays at Current River SP for SC trail maintenance, I'd never hiked its trails. We stopped to hike the Centennial Bluff trail. The historical plaques about its role as an early park were very interesting. Nice climb to the bluff. And a the pond, we checked out the 3 barn swallow nests on its raft/pavilion.
