Event: British Relays

Running warm up/down 20:00 [1] 1 km (20:00 / km)
shoes: Swoops
Warmup for relay, running around the waiting pen for Tom then a pile of stretching while watching the run in
Orienteering race 32:50 [5]**** 4.5 km (7:18 / km) +85m 6:40 / km

Mark M on first leg, solid run (12th). TomR on 2nd leg, another solid run - I was pleasantly surprised when I saw him appear out of the forest because I knew he would be chuffed with his time. He pulled us up to 3rd, damn nice.

Mark had given one bit of advice - avoid running through the green stuff at all costs.

Got a shout from a guy as I set off - 'I'm coming right after you'. Shit. Well that spurred me on, didn't want him following me so decided to blast the first 3 after glancing at the map. Nailed all 3, good stuff. Settled into my rythym after that, then came my battle with the green section, so I followed Mark's advice and went round. I actually looped round my 7 on the way to 6, attacking 6 from the white gave me a perfect attack point about 30m from the control so I nailed it. I then decided I was confident enough to stay in the green for number 7, wobbled ever so slightly when I saw a control I had persuaded myself was in the right place, but got my focus back fast and went on to nail the control from there.
Was pretty easy after that, just had issues with keeping the pace up as I was tiring, 16km yesterday was taking its toll, as well as my right foot blister going mental.. Blocked that out and pushed.

Hitting 11 I heard some rustling beside me and a guy came careering out of the forest and punched just after me. Was worried he was on my course and final leg too so just put my head down and ran, got my line bang on into 12 and after that was a tape-following exercise. Turns out he wasn't on my course (nor was the guy in front I wasn't able to catch) but I stayed in front of him anyway.

We were a bit confused when finishing as to where we'd finished, we got announced but none of heard.. Results went up, 3rd. Yay.

3 of us were pretty chuffed to get 3rd, BOC bronze medals and a mug each. Been a while since I've won an O medal :D

Shame for Tom and Mark we don't have another regular M18 runner as they'd be really competitive in the M18 relays. None of this 'running with an old boy' malarkey. I think the 18s were running the same courses today, we'd have been 3rd in that class too.

Blister is now excruciatingly painful. When I took the taping off the compede came too, the skin of the blister attached taking a chunk of skin off my foot too. Can hardly walk at the moment. Lucky I'm not running much this week due to organising the World Schools si.

run to start, running back and forth along track there doing dynamic stretching.

being really really careful with my calf, dunno why!

then a warm down 1km or so afterwards, couldn't face any more
Orienteering race 2:05:12 [5]***** 15.7 km (7:58 / km) +350m 7:10 / km

Damn that was fun.

Calf held up brilliantly, I was shocked. Had decided beforehand to jog the first 3 controls, pick a couple of bail-out points 'just in case'. first couple of controls were scrappy as a result. Settled down into a good pace after that, faffed about after 5 after hitting an un-mapped ride and getting confused.

My final bail-out was 16 and I was feeling ace so I just kept plugging away at my slow pace. Legs were struggling when I hit the shitty green section at the end (after about 1hr50 of running in gorgeous white forest) but I kept it slow and hit the controls well.

Culbin is stunning.

Was 40th on M21E, which I'm pretty chuffed about (uk cup points, woop) as I've been injured / lazy for the last 2 years so finally getting back into my 'O' is brilliant. Beat a pile of people I knew I'd struggle to beat, only pity about this run was not breaking 2hrs, but hey, I enjoyed it immensely and was pleased with my run. Picked up 2 blisters on the instep of my foot, right was especially bad - compeed and strapping required for tomorrow, didn't really affect run today.

Much improvement to be done in running ability, getting passed by old men (no offence if Graeme reads this!) was a bit frustrating!

Oli J won in 81 mins, silly-fast time.
