Saturday Jun 21

Note
(injured) (rest day)
The first true rest day in a while.
Feels good.

Best news is that I've been selected for the Irish WUOC team.
Sooo happy (",)

Thursday Jun 19

Orienteering long 1:20:12 [3]5 km (16:02 / km)
ahr:143 max:164 (injured) shoes: VJ Twister
Being that the 10.3km course was planned on a 1:10000 map which was thought to be 1:15000, the classic training wasn't so long.
I decided to test the ankle in either a walk or run.
Feels ok on flats, but terrains a different matter.
Mainly walked round the course, cutting it short about 3/4s round. Tried a bit of running when I could. Was happy enough with the distance I managed. Good sign.
Note
Bruising and swelling has come up on the ankle.
Gladly doesn't feel as bad as it looks!

Wednesday Jun 18

Orienteering (Map-memory) 1:25:22 [4]6.4 km (13:20 / km)
ahr:154 max:178 shoes: VJ Twister
Kirsten and I did alternating map-memory legs until control 12.
Found I underestimated distances and didn't take in enough map features.
Neither of us were able to follow the current leg while trying to memorise our next leg.
Did progressively improve as the course went on. But cut it short as we were quite slow, and was all in good time as the thunder and lightning began shortly after we headed back!
Orienteering (Street Sprint) 20:26 [5]2.3 km (8:53 / km)
ahr:173 max:186 (injured) shoes: Saucony Grid Fusion
Felt quite ploddy on this "sprint" around Tartu after all the weeks training.
But all was going well, until a bit of confusion near control 12 at the playpark. I legged it down a hill when I solved the confusion, but went over my ankle. Fell when tried to put weight on it.
Luckily Iain and Tess were passing just as in happened, so kept me sane while I let it rest and happily I able to hobble back with them, so wasn't too bad.
Missed out last 2 controls, though could see both.

Tuesday Jun 17

Orienteering (Forest Sprint) 37:14 [5]3 km (12:25 / km)
ahr:170 max:184 shoes: VJ Twister
Crazy area which was a X-country skiing training centre. Had to dodge the roller-skiiers and cyclists.
Hilly, hilly, hilly.
All was well, bit tough physically, but navigationally fine.
EXCEPT in the area where there was an unmapped ski-jump! Wasted some time finding control 3 here, but much more time finding control 6 here when I returned as I hadn't discovered the problem yet!
(A ski-jump was mapped, but 2 were present, and the big new one was the obvious one).
Orienteering long (Kobras Training Event) 53:53 [4]4.32 km (12:28 / km)
ahr:158 max:177 shoes: VJ Twister
Rushed off at the start in a hurry to get underway, which was silly as a very difficult control 1 in a large dark green block proved too difficult for me.
Once I eventually relocated near control 2 I just continued on to do a few controls, and get a few other controls on the way to the finish.

Handy having a map with all the controls on it!

Monday Jun 16

Orienteering race (Street Sprint) 19:52 [5]2.6 km (7:38 / km)
ahr:184 max:195 shoes: Saucony Grid Fusion
WUOC Street Sprint training with SEDS in Polva.
Caught Kirsten up by 2min by control 4 meaning we could use eachother for much of the course.
No stupid errors, barr maybe missing the optimal route to 1.
Orienteering (Middle training) 1:12:32 [4]4.6 km (15:46 / km)
ahr:175 max:186 shoes: VJ Twister
The bugs, the bugs!
Was an absolute woos on this. Was navigating like a bit of a moo in the early stages, but that improved. In thick green marshes I just struggled to avoid all the wee animals that were delighted there was new flesh.
Brought me crashing down to earth after my sprint happiness.
The second last control was a bugger as i couldn't manage a chance to check my map in the dark green as the bugs were being so pesty.
