Note
(rest day)

Taking a good rest today. BE sprint start times up and they've published the heats. Making the A final looks a bit tricky with the likes of: Ralph Street, Nick Barrable, Ian Nixon, Graham Gristwood and Scott Collier all in my heat plus plenty of other quality orienteers. I think my strategy has to be to go absolutely flat out to try and make the final.

Orienteering (BOK Trot) 1:19:41 [3] 10.1 km (7:53 / km) +490m 6:21 / km

Took it easy today just cruising round but it was fairly physical so still felt tired. Nice change to have a map which you could read, area and course good too. Lost time on 8 confused by the fact the white was open but it was silly I should have ignored that. Lost a little on 9, 10 (I think was too high) and 11 (not quite on the mapped feature) but pretty pleased to be able to spot this. I fell running down a rocky track which hurt a lot and spent a good 10 mins in the shower picking out dirt out of my cuts with a safety pin, bit bruised but should pull through...

Run 10:00 [3] 2.0 km (5:00 / km)

WU/WD

Run 30:00 [3] 6.0 km (5:00 / km)

Went out looking for a kid who was lost. He predictably returned while I was out. Wish I'd eaten/drunk something after finishing before going back out. Think I'm going to take a couple of days off to try and recover for next weekend.

Orienteering (Stock hill) 49:00 [2] 5.3 km (9:15 / km)

Todays race did well at highlighting what a great job Alan (planner) and Charles (controller) did at last year BUCS relay. I came away from that race after previously thinking stock hill was shite thinking it was actually pretty good. I now think it's shite again.

Felt pretty drained from the off then was not able to find 2, I'm glad Craney agreed that the map wasn't quite right and he lost a fair bit off time here too. It probably didn't help that I wasn't into the scale too so I was maybe a little far over but should still have seen it if it was right. Eventually found 3 and had remembered that code as 2 so carried on to 4, got half way to 5 before realising I hadn't found 2...

Went back to 2, 3, 4 again but at this point just felt really tired so just jogged round the rest of the course, this probably enabled me to notice more than the others how wrong the map was in places. Still I'm not particularly bothered I didn't try too hard, it's next week when I want to do well just want to save myself for that.

Not really helping the confidence but I know I'm running and navigating fairly well at the moment so just need to start a fresh tomorrow. Will probably only run at 70% tomorrow anyway. Oh and I missed out 12...not sure how. And stopped for a quick chat with craney on the course.

Cycle 25:00 [3] 6.0 mi (4:10 / mi)

IW - legs feeling a little tired today...due to the clock changes.

Cycle 25:00 [3] 6.0 mi (4:10 / mi)

HFW

Note

Probably needed a rest but too much work to do to go running today anyway.

Cycle 25:00 [3] 6.0 mi (4:10 / mi)

IW

Run 1:00:00 [2] 7.7 mi (7:48 / mi)
shoes: Salomon XA Pro

Nice easy one with Peter, I really couldn't have managed anything harder today. Sore calves still, to be expected doing a rare road race in spikes (sans spikes).

Cycle 25:00 [3] 6.0 mi (4:10 / mi)

HFW. 5km results are up, I did indeed clock 16.59, fancy seeing what time I could do on the flat now.

Orienteering 55:00 [3] 8.0 km (6:53 / km)

BOK training on Merthyr Mawr. Did 3 loops, mass start, was good. Got a bit confused in the same area each time. I think for relay practice it needed to be slightly closer on the gaffling as after the first couple of controls I generally didn't see people. Really appreciate the efforts of Mark and Alice though, still very good training, thanks!

Went to get some food afterwards at a place that offered you carvery then curry (no joke) so I had two dinners...bit much really! Sore soleus muscles from the 5km.

Run race (Bridge Inn 5k) 16:59 [5] 5.0 km (3:24 / km)

Had a bit of shoe dimema as I hadn't bothered replacing my road shoes as hadn't been doing any road running recently. Wanted to get some Inov8 f-lite 230s but nowhere in Bristol stocks them. Ended up running in my XC spikes (without the spikes obviously) which was fine although tough on my calves.

Last time I did this I ran 17.56, I was pretty tired that time so thought I should go quicker. It's a little hilly (well undulating) this course. Settled into the second group with 3 guys and the leading girl who I recognised from intervals (Imo?) after about 2km one guy dropped off and the other two pulled out a little lead. As we turned to come back up the hill it was just me and Imo, I'd go past on the uphill and she'd come back on the flats and downs. with about a km to go she pulled out a 10m lead, I thought that was it but with about 50m to go I manned up and decided I should be able to get past her. Got my sprint on and just got past in time. I slowed for the last few metres, if I was wearing a watch I certainly wouldn't have done as I would have realised how close I was to 17. Think I just snuck under as Imo clocked 17.01, I'll await the results with interest!
