SHI Relay

Cracking runs by Eng first two legs and Willy handing over to me to go out with Peter Bray with a big lead. We played it steady and had different gaffles the whole time but kept coming together. The legs felt awful from the start but it was all pretty easy running due to the technical nature of the course and the position we were in.

Still together through spectator then I was nailing my gaffle but I couldn't see it and panicked and ran back to Peter's and so lost 30s. From then just jogged it in not too fussed as knew this pretty much guaranteed the England win.

The women nailed it too and so a very convincing win in the end.

SHI's is never top of the list of serious competitions but always great fun and most of all pretty relaxed with some quality competition thrown in. The relay with Willy handing over to me (and remembering the key motivational phrase) and out there in the lead with Peter was amazing as all 3 of us have been racing each other since we were about 9 years old.

SHI Individual

Fun area with mining spoils and then some more open moorland. Physically felt fairly good despite some DOMS and not too far off Scott and Sasha on the long hill leg. Made about 5min of mistakes in total, 4 of them on 2,25,26, 28 which were all within about 300m of each other. Evidently didn't quite get that bit of the map.

Despite a smashing in the M21s England had a nice lead after today.

Felt like a giraffe trying to run for first 5min then the DOMS eased slightly for a couple of laps with Alex. Then to the gym to sort membership and popped in for 15min to watch some cricket and flop around on the floor.

Well the DOMS hit about 5s in and the bonk at about 5min. Real struggle but at least was a nice day to be in the pentlands.

To Hillend and bits up the hill but walked the steep bits.

Caerketton Downhill. 1st & CR

1.8km -300m

Always keen to do this as looked like fun and right down my street. In the up and down I had absolutely gone for the descents and been about 10-15s off the downhill record and wasn't sure if I could get that much quicker.

Fairly good conditions but started raining at -3 and had a few tiny slips and struggled round the last 90 degree bend but otherwise couldn't have been much better conditions.
Set off all out on the flat top bit and instantly felt tired then usual throw myself down the steep bit and crawl up the knoll before the fun last section through the gorse. As it was a time trial had to shout ahead but most people got out the way which was very kind. Was on the limit most the way down but held on to get the record by 9s.

Looking at Strava on the bit from Hillend Cairn to the gate (very steep part) I was 1s slower than the race a month ago and only 1s quicker than previous record holder. In last 2min of race again only 1s quicker than previous record holder so must have done the damage on the flat running at the top and maybe the tiny short climb up the knoll.
