Orienteering race 1:02:04 [3] 4.29 km (14:28 / km)

Canadian O Champs, Middle distance Hillsborough New Brunswick. M55+ age group.

Complex heavily pitted area, with very slow forest. Not too much undergrowth but close trees making it slow going. Lots of tracks not all or which made sense at times but most likely due to sweat in the eyes and very hard to see with all the contours.

Tried to take the conservative route to #1 around the tracks, got onto the approach track and though down here a short way then turn in, turned too soon and cam out on the track on the far side, worked out where and back in from behind the control.

#2 & #3 OK but felt slow, #4 went up a steep slope and felt like I had over shoot, so went out to a track to relocated only to find I was really close the first time. #5 & #6 Ok from #6 had trouble making the tracks fit my view so headed north to a big track and along to an obvious attackpoint. #8 was good but made a big mistake on #9 as I lost contact and found a control on a pond, there were lots of ponds, and could not work out which one it was. Wondered a bit until I went south to hit a track and had to run back down the track to near #8 to be sure where I was and then back to the control. slow through very complex area #10 - #14 then a couple to go to the finish.

Ended up 7th, but nearly 30 minutes down on the winner but 5 mins out of 4th place, which was definitely a possibility, but not today.

GPS not happy so later ..

Halifax, Citadel, which is an old British Fort looking over the harbour and was the seat of British power and then the Canadian defence for a century or more.

Back down through the city park, was told off very politely, it is Canada after all, by one of the gardeners that jogging was not permitted in the park. Walked a bit through the park which is a very pretty park with lots of flower beds, bandstand and lake. Then along the wharf and back to the hotel.
