Day 1 of the ride to Montpellier,

Distance 65km,
Trip total 75km

Nantes to Bouin on the Atlantic Coast. Started with usual challenge to find good way out of new city, we picked up a tourist map of the velo routes and there were good signs through the back streets. We just missed a fete de velo which seemed to follow our route which looked like to would be busy with lots of bikes judging by the number of marshals on the turns.

On our way out of Nantes we passed the home of Machines of Nantes who are the creators of the Giants that came to the Perth festival in 2015. Le Grand Elephant was on display and it would be fun to see it move, you could take a ride for Euro 8, also an amazing rotunda in the same the style.

On through vineyards and horticultural farms to the coastal wet lands which were all drained as pastures, lots of small channels and water birds everywhere. We had what looked like a beaver cross the road, but we don't think they live here so maybe a mink?

Found a good picnic spot for lunch by a river and then on to our B&B. Seemed like no one was home so rode out to the ocean and back, still no one around. Eventually woke the host who explained that his wife was looking after her sick mother so the evening diner was cancelled so now off to the local town to a restaurant.

3 GPS Traces for the day as the Garmin was low on power so turned it off at lunch and at the first visit to the B&B

The start of the tour.

Loaded the bikes into the hire car plus numerous panniers and assorted bike boxes and set off from Folkestone to Portsmouth. Other than a few circuits of Pompey to find petrol and the hire car shop quite an easy drive. Even found time to stop at Petworth Manor and check out a few of Tuner's paintings and Capability Brown's handy works. Short ride to the port and then an 11 hour crossing to St Malo, nice food and wine on Brittany Ferries and a decent small cabin.

Ride from the port to La Gare to check out which trains were running, French rail strike is on! Basically every other train was running so a 1 hour wait then 2 hours in Rennes for the connection to Nantes.

Had to hunt around in Nantes for the hotel as there are lots of little streets and crowds of people.

Now to work out the best route out of town for tomorrow morning to get down to the Loire Atlantic coast.

Note

Had pretty much a week off from formal exercise. Went for a couple of slow walks in Bristol around the docks and out to Avebury with Dave & Sheena. Unfortunately Sheena is in long term recovery from major knee surgery and can only recently walk without crutches so slow walking is the best she can do.

Down to Folkestone but with storms and wind there was no motivation to ride or run.

Very short ride in Folkestone to check the bikes that were serviced yesterday. The weather has been disgusting for the start of June with strong wind, driving rain and around 12 deg! So little or no motivation for riding. Anyway all good with the bikes.

My bike needed new wheels as the rim had a small split in one wheels plus the usual chain and cluster worn, cables etc. Nicole's bike was in better shape having had new chain etc two years ago before the last big trip.
