Walking 1:39:54 [3] 10.77 km (9:16 / km) +109m 8:50 / km

A bit of last minute Rogaine training. Walked out through Shenton Park Bush land, loads of really nice Donkey orchids, to Perry Lakes. Back to Subi and home. Legs started to feel a little weary towards the end so 24hrs is looking easy!

Went through the new development at Perry Lakes and later in the walk through Subi Centro, how is that these new suburbs are so soulless? No coffee shops, no corner stores, no community facilities. We have half a dozen coffee shops within 500m of our house, several restaurants, a small bar, a TAB etc and they are all busy and vibrant parts of a community, but these new ones have no heart and must be very dull places to live.

Gentle spin out to East Perth for coffee and back via EQ.

EQ still a horror to ride through with rough cobbles, buses, no designated bike route through the development. Will stick to South Perth in future

Note

Struck down with a cold on Monday, presumably from London or the plane trip. Nicole had it last week.

Getting a bit better today, but not up for running this evening may just go for a walk.

Luckily it did not get to full strength until Monday otherwise the Orienteering Champs would have been more of a struggle due to a lack of breathing

Walking 41:32 [2] 4.36 km (9:31 / km) +60m 8:54 / km

Walking with Noel and trying to fight off the effects of my cold before the rogaine this weekend

Orienteering race 1:14:23 [4] 6.69 km (11:07 / km) +132m 10:07 / km

WA Long Champs Lovers Lane - very cold day, especially after the nice sunshine yesterday it was a bit of a shock. Soon warmed up on the hills and bashing through some pretty thick scrubby bush.

Was doing Ok to #5 and was in the lead at that point, stopped one creek too soon on #5 to #6 and lost 3 minutes to Russell who took the lead there and kept it to the end. Made a big mistake on #8 where I got into a parallel gully and could not make sense of it and lost around 15 minutes getting it sorted out and finding the control #8 and had dropped to 6th on the class. Manged to crawl back to 3rd by the end but like others wasted a bunch of time on the last control in the thicket, which created some discussion :-)

Win to Russell Wade and 2nd to Rob West

Orienteering race 34:52 [4] 3.71 km (9:24 / km) +108m 8:12 / km

WA Middle Distance Champs,

Not enough concentration out of the start triangle and was a few degrees off and was too low on the ridge for the first control, picked up some large rock that I thought was above the control, but was lower on the spur so blundered around too low until I hit control #2 - back up to see Rob West my 2 minute man just below the control so knew that unless Rob made a crazy mistake I was only good for 2nd.

(Edit - GPS tells me I went very close and was on the right line just did not stop on the spur when I should have!!)

No really significant mistakes on the rest of the course a hesitation between 5 & 6 when I thought I had overshot the control but Rob came by and I worked out that I was one creek short.

Did not seem to have much energy on the hills

Made it to the finish about 20m in front of Rob.

Tomorrow is the Long Day and I am last off but with Rob first off and Russell Wade (setter today) in the field it should be a fun race.
