Orienteering race 55:23 [4] 6.33 km (8:45 / km) +172m 7:42 / km
shoes: VJ Integrators

Oz Long Champs M65A

Fairly straightforward area with route choices to go straight, generally the best option when the forest was white and tracks when it was young pines and steeper gullies.

Was caught by my 2 minute man Bill Jones at #2 which considering I thought I was going OK was a bit of a surprise, so dug a bit deeper on the hilly section and manged to get away from Bill. Passed a couple of other people on the hills which kept me motivated, not sure if they were M65 or other courses.

Took the straight route #5 to #6 and will be interesting to see the splits as it worked for me, Was caught at #5 by 4 minute man Gordon but he messed up in the circle at #6 and got all the time back, except of 25 sec which was likely his faster speed over the last section.

I knew Nick Dent had done 54 something and was watching my time and pushed hard at the end to try to get under his time. Ran into to the finish to hear Nick call that I was just over his time :-(

Was under 10 min/km for the first time for a while, and on such a hilly course that felt good. Mind you the winner was 10 minutes in front!

Enjoyed it even if the navigation was a bit on the easy side, still plenty of scope to mess up the route choice and make small errors

Sandy Creek Reserve Barossa

True to its name, it was sandy, lots of fairy orchids and other random flowers.

Bobtail and kangaroos

Retired to Charles Melton for a lovely tasting, and enjoyed some banter with Jill Dalton from New Zealand who came in search of anything but Sauvignon Blanc!

Kaiserstuhl loop.

Some nice flowers out with daisy, donkey, spider and unknown yellow orchids, but nothing like the display of flowers in the WA bush.

OZ Champs Sprint

Fairly straightforward area at Renmark Schools, just don't have the speed of the others and was off the pace. No real mistakes, a couple of routes where I could have gone through the buildings but on a quick look I thought the red lines had closed the way.

OZ Relay 3rd leg in M65

Ok through the first 10 controls before I had a brain fade and went up the wrong gully. Took ages to work out where I was and relocated off the power line. Lost around 10 minutes, likely worth at least a couple of places. Ended up 6th and best result could have been 3rd but more likely 4th without the error.

Tough area with ;lots of deep erosion gullies and short steep sandy climbs.

Nice day but hard
