Orienteering race 51:00 [5] *** 6.47 km (7:53 / km)
spiked:14/17c

Day 2 of the US O Champs

The area was close to the Day 1 but much more open and the navigation was easier than day 1 so the focus was on keeping going and not taking a rest up the hills.

The 1st Control was like Day 1 viasble on on the track from the map collection - did not get caught thinking it was for someone else today. The leg to #2 was in scattered bush and I was not concentrating hard enough and ended up short of the control and relocated from the rock to the SW of the control. #3 was OK but got confused in the Aspen grove on #4 but relocated right on line comming out of the Aspen.

From #4 to the finish was all open running with several longer legs with little or no route choice so just push the legs and try not to blow up.

Finished with 51 mins and a GPS distance of 7.01

I had a long drive to Salt Lake CIty after the event so did not hang around for the final results - the person 3rd on Day 1 was a couple of minutes faster than me so I was sitting 2nd but would expect some others to post a better time.

It was a good event and nice to meet a few old friends from Canada who had come down for the event and run close to potential and survive the altitude.

Orienteering race 52:19 [5] *** 5.89 km (8:53 / km)
spiked:13/15c

Day 1 of the US Orienteering Champs. The Area was just 10km East of Laramie in Wyoming, really nice area of rock and runnable Ponderosa Pine. I was 2nd M55 by 20 sec but wasted around 2 minutes in the middle of the course I was heading straight to the control then turned right for some reason I think I picked up a bit of rock that I think was un mapped, but really lost a bit of concentration. I also lost just under a minute on the first control which you could see from the map boxes and should really have been the triangle and I could not see the number so thought it was all too easy to be mine! I also think the Triangle was 50m out so the control was too close to the start as it should have been 100m but was really only 50m. There were M50, M60 and M18 on the course and some of all of them also were ahead of me and I was 9th overall ? not sure what 3 minutes would do for the placing but it would maybe have been 4th or something. I caught one guy who was M60 who kept running away from me after every control but he was not good in the circle.

The race was at around 8,500 ft and whilst the up hills were not the fastest and some walking did happen it was not as hard as I thought it would be and I might try and push a bit harder tomorrow ? hopefully not with the consequence of completely losing the plot on the navigation.

The area was somewhat of a Peterdine area with lots of open and scatter rock and subtle contours so nothing that was too much of a surprise. Really nice low ponderosa pine trees and never too steep.

Straight line was 5.89km GPS had 6.31km
Looking forward to tomorrow.

Running 34:51 [3] 5.0 km (6:58 / km)

Ran some trails behind the hotel in Phoenix at 6:30am but still far too hot for a good run and around 85deg F (low 30s C) Would be great place to run when cooler. Lots of ridges, steep slopes small trails and good vies to the next peak.

Still much better than the running machines in the Gym.

Moved on to Denver and ready for the US O Champs this weekend

Treadmill 32:00 [3] 5.0 km (6:24 / km)

In Phoenix and 40 deg Plus so went to the hotel gym and ran for 30 minutes in the conveyor belt. How I hate these things, it is so boring that all you do is wind up the speed until you crash!

Tomorrow will try a real run around some streets and then up a trail I saw.
