NOY race 39:31 [4] 4.3 km (9:11 / km)

NOY6 at Belford.

I suspect many didn't travel up to Belford due to the expectation it was going to be horribly wet and we were in a similar mind but decided there just might be a chance it was better slightlly inland. The rain eased off at Rutherford but didn't expire completely until a few kilometres before Branxton. At the event site we even had some sunshine and the conditions in the bush itself were perfect.

As the courses were a bit longer than usual, due to the relative ease of progress in the area, added to the fact we were heading directly to Treachery Beach camp ground after the event, I decided to take on the short hard course foregoing my usual medium distance.

This meant a head to head with Mapgirl who headed out first while I minded LeepBax. She returned ealier than I expected and was keen to tell me she clocked under ten minute K's and made no mistakes. Other than that I didn't know her exact time to beat and since I knew she was actually running better than me at Parkrun I knew the pressure was on to perform well.

All was going to plan until I spotted Maria O heading the wrong way on the Pivot leg from 8 to 9. Why would she be going that way? Doesn't she generally do the short? A quick look at my map revealed the stuningly simple answer. I was doing the pivot loop in the wrong direction. Bugga! Mapgirl will surely beat me now and I might not be able to get my sub 40 minute time I thought was possible halfway around (I was shooting for 36).

A quick change in direction was required but the shortest route took me through some thicker green and I must admit I was a bit unsure of my location as it felt a lot longer to the control. BTW if I had not seen Maria I might have kept going and not noticed as for the second time in a row I failed to take control descriptions and would not have noticed the codes were wrong.

As it turned out I managed to beat Mapgirl by a couple of minutes. Attackpoint splits suggest I lost 1:23 and this can be all atributed to going backwards for part of the loop. Apart from that I had no trouble and enjoyed the course - although I was worried on a couple of controls that I pinged but the control itself was not visible until you were right there.

Thanks to Shane for an enjoyable morning. Pity more people didn't make the trip. Afterwards we headed back to the coast and back to the rain, the worst of it on the drive from the Bungwhal turnoff through to Seal Rocks. Torrential! At least the rain subsided after a day and a half and we had brilliant weather for the next three days.

Note: Since I normally run Middle I thought it best to nominate myself as WF so as not to influence any pointscores in that division. As far as my pints are concerned, I haven't been doing any good anyway so it didn't matter.
