Thursday Jul 17

Note
(sick) (rest day)
Coming down with a boomerang cold - just when I was getting properly back into the swing of things of course

Wednesday Jul 16

Run 1:01:00 [3]
Over to Tinakori Hill in the hope of getting some smallish repeated ups and downs. Not quite to plan though, even ended up on the summit ridge at one point. If I was going to be in Wellington much longer I'd see if I could dig out one of the old maps of that maunga, (assuming the maze of tracks hasn't changed too much) as half the time I had no idea where I was and the rest of the time I was wrong.

Monday Jul 14

Run 28:00 [4]
Did the "easy wednesday" loop (yeah, I know it's monday), supposed to be a recovery session after a hard workout yesterday. But despite coming the closest yet to tanking out on the way up Everton, once I started hitting downhills, got a good bit of speed up and by the time I got on the flat was enjoying myself too much to wind the pace back to what it was supposed to be. Also got lucky with almost all the traffic lights between the gardens/cemetary and waterfront which probably helped.

Sunday Jul 13

Run intervals 44:00 [4]
From home, down to the riverbank, then 4 x 4 min intervals with 2-3 min recoveries, then a slow "warm down" back home. Not the most convincing interval session ever, and had to walk a bit of not quite all the recoveries, but made the 4x4 target so not as bad as I thought it would be. Bewdy day!

Not a lot of sleep, if any, last night which is a worry, because it would have been nice to have got a good night in before the boys in Olmouac make all their finals!

Thursday Jul 10

Run 56:00 [3]
Physically pretty much the same again except for thighs in particular feeling sore before even starting. Still stayed out a good 10 minutes longer than intended though.

Route initially pretty much the same again, but after a bit of looping round the gardens had the (not very sensible) idea that if I was struggling along, might as well be struggling along uphill, so headed up to Highbury. Then down to Aro Valley on a track I haven't tried to use for a very long time, because the bottom end used to be guarded by a neighbour whose hobbies were failing to recognise legal private/public land boundaries, and training large dogs to attack on sight. Judging by the amount of rubbish attempting to block the bottom end he hasn't given up on the first, but nothing tried to bite me today, so he may have been encouraged to give up on the second.

Wednesday Jul 9

Run 49:00 [3]
Back into it...
No specific plan for today other than to see if I can still put one foot in front of the other without falling over. Took a bit of a convoluted route through the gardens with lots of minor ups and downs, then down into Thorndon for a change and across to the waterfront at the stadium. (Pleased to see Stadium management responding to the power crisis by only having one light tower going in the middle of the day)

Felt ok at first, except all those instinctive things like breathing and getting a good stride going weren't so instinctive. Then after about 35mins started to feel every minute of the 3 week layoff, probably still enough of last week's cold left over to not help. Got a bit of work to do to get back where I was, methinks.

Note
Hmmm that last entry was a touch on the negative side (& I didn't even mention what's really been winding me up lately...) so I'd better counter that with some good news that's also developed during the unplanned training hiatus. Late August, birdman begins up to 2.75 years in the employ of Massey University, carrying out fieldwork manipulating and monitoring robin and rat numbers in forest fragments. This is an exciting project in an ecological sense, but I won't explain why here, to prevent readers' eyes from rolling over backwards. But it's also exciting for me, as for the first time in far too long I know where I'll be more than 6 months down the track. The downside is that where I know I'll be for more than 6 months down the track is ...Benneydale! A prize to the first person who knows where that is. Clue: my agent will shortly begin transfer negotiations with Hamilton and Taupo Orienteering Clubs. I hope the bidding doesn't get too frenzied...

Note
(injured) (sick)
The hole in my arm doesn't seem to want to heal up ever, I'm sick sick sick with a nasty cold or flu or something, not getting enough sleep, the weather sucks, and I just wanna get back running!!!

Sorry, I just needed to have a mope. But it is annoying to have hit such a bump in the road just when I was starting to pretend I could see the benefits of the new training attitude....
