| Physically pretty much the same again except for thighs in particular feeling sore before even starting. Still stayed out a good 10 minutes longer than intended though.
Route initially pretty much the same again, but after a bit of looping round the gardens had the (not very sensible) idea that if I was struggling along, might as well be struggling along uphill, so headed up to Highbury. Then down to Aro Valley on a track I haven't tried to use for a very long time, because the bottom end used to be guarded by a neighbour whose hobbies were failing to recognise legal private/public land boundaries, and training large dogs to attack on sight. Judging by the amount of rubbish attempting to block the bottom end he hasn't given up on the first, but nothing tried to bite me today, so he may have been encouraged to give up on the second. |

| Back into it...
No specific plan for today other than to see if I can still put one foot in front of the other without falling over. Took a bit of a convoluted route through the gardens with lots of minor ups and downs, then down into Thorndon for a change and across to the waterfront at the stadium. (Pleased to see Stadium management responding to the power crisis by only having one light tower going in the middle of the day)
Felt ok at first, except all those instinctive things like breathing and getting a good stride going weren't so instinctive. Then after about 35mins started to feel every minute of the 3 week layoff, probably still enough of last week's cold left over to not help. Got a bit of work to do to get back where I was, methinks. |

| Hmmm that last entry was a touch on the negative side (& I didn't even mention what's really been winding me up lately...) so I'd better counter that with some good news that's also developed during the unplanned training hiatus. Late August, birdman begins up to 2.75 years in the employ of Massey University, carrying out fieldwork manipulating and monitoring robin and rat numbers in forest fragments. This is an exciting project in an ecological sense, but I won't explain why here, to prevent readers' eyes from rolling over backwards. But it's also exciting for me, as for the first time in far too long I know where I'll be more than 6 months down the track. The downside is that where I know I'll be for more than 6 months down the track is ...Benneydale! A prize to the first person who knows where that is. Clue: my agent will shortly begin transfer negotiations with Hamilton and Taupo Orienteering Clubs. I hope the bidding doesn't get too frenzied... |
