Orienteering race 1:47:25 [4] **** 5.3 km (20:16 / km) +250m 16:24 / km
spiked:14/18c

Štonah for the OOcup finale. Piopio with forest ...and massive sinkholes that thankfully I didn't have any very close encounters with. A mostly pretty good run marred by the few mistakes becoming big ones. Found the track network useful not so much for running on except for some track run route choice on a couple of longer legs, but more for picking my way through the forest breaking legs into sections. Same mistake at 8 and 10, not monitoring how far around the curve of large depressions I'd come and both times taking far too long to relocate. Both times potentially useful detail was hiding under course marking I might add but I was the one that made the mistake in the first place. Then some classic end of course lost focus silliness at 16 (minor) and 17 (horrible). The rest was great though, even had one of those mythical moments where I could see the map superimposed on the terrain I was running through on the short leg to 5.

Run warm up/down 20:00 [2] 1.7 km (11:46 / km) +250m 6:47 / km

Just a nice little run slash jog slash walk up to the start as I wasn't too keen on the chairlift.

Lajnar. Finally a better effort, probably helped by the orienteering style being more like what we're used to in NZ even though the terrain was still quite special. Didn't take the worst route on the looooooong 1st leg but missed 2 better options. And small glitches in the circle at 2 and 7, the kind of time loss I probably wouldn't have noticed on the other days. Really enjoyed the downhill section, helped that I was nailing everything and could get up a decent speed

Run warm up/down 5:00 [2]

A bit more success working through the traffic today but the start was closer so probably a similar amount of running. Good because it was a bit closer to my time than I thought

Orienteering race 2:08:39 [4] ***** 6.9 km (18:39 / km) +225m 16:02 / km

Laghi di Fusine 2nd edition. The benefits of having an AP log:I'm already feeling better about today after only filling in the stats. Course would be near the upper end physically of what I would normally run even without considering the tough underfoot conditions and spike rate higher than it felt like. I guess when you drop time on 4 controls in a row (3-6) or make the biggest misses on legs you thought you had a secure plan for (4, 6, 19) you're going to feel a bit grumpy. But even on the legs that went clean it's apparent I just don't have the terrain fitness for even the kind of mid field result I'd be rapt with. Although I did get a top 20 split today and would have bagged the finish split if I matched yesterday's run in!

Orienteering race 1:25:22 [4] ***** 3.8 km (22:28 / km) +175m 18:16 / km

Laghi di Fusine. Somewhat intense. I would suggest if this was an offset print map it looked like someone had sneezed on the black screen. But mostly went much better, apart from 10 mins lost after losing map contact on the way to 5 and taking quite some time to get it back. 2 and 15 were also a bit expensive (15 one of the easiest controls of course), other than that every time I lost a bit of time in the circle is matched by an absolutely ridiculous spike at another control. Maybe I do still know how to do this?

Run warm up/down 5:00 [3]

Running on and off to the start. You would think with the higher population density Europeans would be more aware of people trying to get past on a narrow path...

Event: OOcup/2016

Orienteering race 2:23:31 [3] ***** 5.1 km (28:08 / km) +200m 23:32 / km
spiked:13/24c

Graschelitzen. Oh dear. I was not ready for this. I'd like to blame the thunderstorm that nicely coincided with most of the time I was out but given it didn't really hit until I was on the way to 8 and had already been out over 40 mins... good start with everything making sense most of the way to the 3rd control where I completely misread everything in the circle and then just one mistake after another until the track network round the 12-16 loop helped me get my head back somewhere near the game. A mixture of lost confidence and exhaustion threw in a few more mistakes on the final loop. Biggest lesson was needing to be more diligent with the compass, too many times the reason things stopped making sense was because I wasn't heading in the direction I thought I was

Run warm up/down 10:00 [2]

Mostly walked the long haul to the start but I'll give myself 10 mins for the bits and the bits of the finish to event centre that I ran or jogged
