Orienteering race 1:49:45 [4] **** 7.8 km (14:04 / km) +410m 11:09 / km
spiked:15/18c shoes: XTalon 2017

CD champs Long, Okareka. Early contender for Long distance course of the season. Midfield again, but this time feel I performed above expectations, even though it was a bit of a battle, somehow managed to not just keep going but also pushing hard up to almost the end. (Helped that after finally being passed by Bozzy 8-9 I still had enough sightings of him over the rest of the course to know I must have still been going ok - and helped even more being joined in the long farmland legs home by Kyle who I hadn't met before, obviously a lot fitter than me but much more stop-start, so got a good push where I could have easily just faded). I think the minute or 2 I took to have a little sit-down picnic after 13, was also time well invested! Really happy with the nav side of things, apart from a minor route choice error 8-9 which was made more annoying because that's where Bozzy overtook me, found the area around 9 & 10 a bit mysterious and started wandering a little bit, then a small mistake on the final approach to 16 that I probably wouldn't have noticed only it's where Kyle well and truly got away from me after I thought I'd dropped him at 15....

CD champs middle, Whakarewarewa (a map named Turkish Grinder, which is odd because I thought Grinder would be the kind of thing frowned upon in Turkey). Happy with a mid-field placing but even given current state of fitness would like to have been under 50 minutes. Technically mostly ok, with just a few small wobbles into controls up to 14 but definitely started to loose focus a bit towards the end so lost a few minutes on 15, my luck on greenish shortcuts between tracks finally ran out which dragged me out some way east of the intended route choice and away from the very easy final approach to the control. Winsplits says I lost 2.5 minutes here, but I reckon it would have been more, maybe even enough to have hit that 50 otherwise. On first look at the map, with all the tracks I was skeptical it was middle distance quality, but ..yeah... trying to work through that complex network at 'speed' was a fun challenge! So much so the un-tracked light green 5-8 was probably the easy part.

CD champs Sprint, Toi Ohomai campus & Centennial Park. Once again satisfies with placing, not so much time. No particular target, just feel I could have been faster, I like to think I normally have a knack for campus style sprinting but must be out of practice, it was my information processing speed rather than running speed slowing me down, especially over the first few legs (which admittedly were pretty intense). Clean though - only mistake I can remember is a bit of unnecessary deviation 11-12, but in retrospect don't think I had best route to 7 - suspect out to the road (map edge) and dropping down from the carpark would have been better than my down then up through the forest route choice. Any thoughts Bozzy? Casser?

Ouch! Rogaine, Avoca Valley. Have never seen so many contours on a map! Given that and the ground conditions seemed to be a mix of every ankle trap imaginable, was never going to be much running but still pretty physical. 1210/1810 points. Panicked a bit near the end and dropped up to 150 points worth so should be annoyed about finishing with nearly 10 minutes spare - but would definitely gone over time if I had stuck to plan. Only nav issue was wasting some time searching an unmapped cliff that I should have known had come up too soon to be the one with the control on.
