Orienteering race 1:40:37 [3] **** 6.3 km (15:58 / km) +310m 12:49 / km
spiked:17/20c shoes: X-talon 2022

Long distance, Kaihoka Lakes. Feeling fine so not only went out but went out to race rather than cruise around the course taking photos. Not feeling so fine at the finish, but only because of the brutal course, not because of ill health or anything. The sand blows early in the course and the last lot of hills were particularly tough. Apart from some minor in-circle problems, all in the sand blows where it was difficult to interpret the map, 3 real time losses. 9 not so much a mistake but lost focus & confidence (& about 3 minutes apparently) and picked my way slowly through what should have been an easy and quick leg. Thankfully the next leg was a good one for getting the head back in the game. 15 was trying to avoid climb but must have overdone it (1 minute), while 16 was very silly - joined the wrong two bits of index corner so decided to go wide to save(as I realised about halfway through the leg) pretty much no climb compared to going nearly straight. Winsplits hasn't picked that up but I reckon maybe up to 2 minutes plus shame)

Just inside the top half of a packed M50 field. 40 minutes (66%) down on Carsten (and Darren and Bruce). Without those big clangers I should have gained a couple of places but still not quite into the top 10, which honestly would have come as a bit of a shock for where my fitness must be right now (top half itself is better than expected)

It was a really good course and amazing surroundings, but also came away feeling we didn't get the best out of the map (can see several different ways we could have had about the same course length and got more of the rock). It's somehow almost more frustrating having a good course that could have been better than one that wasn't very good at all.

Note
(sick)

Sat out the Canaan Downs middle after an hour or so in the cold wind around the event centre reinvigorated the cold or whatever I'd had over the previous couple of days. Didn't want to throw away the rest of the weekend...
