Road Biking 2:25:00 [3] 35.0 mi (4:09 / mi) +421m 4:00 / mi

Family outing to the Parkrun (playpark!) then dropped off in Denny.
Denny - Carron Valley - Fintry - Kippen - Gartincaber - Doune - Home.
Great sunshine and views. Very steady pace, made steadier in places by road surfaces to die on. Pleased that the bod held out well.

Thursday Sep 26, 2013 #

Trail/Road running 46:00 [3]

Found the new(ish) path around the massive meander behind the new college; an instant 15-20mins extra on all runs if needed! Work - meander - Old Bridge - Gowanhill - Fire Station - work. Job done; 3 runs in the bag this week :-)

Wednesday Sep 25, 2013 #

Trail/Road running 33:00 [3]

Craigforth loop.
Shorter than I'd imagined but not complaining - just want to try and run 3 times this week to see what happens! Bumped into Sue L near the end so stopped for a chat!

Trail/Road running 37:00 [3]

Castle loop
Nervous and excited about going for a run - no idea what bod would feel like. Not run from work for over 2 years! Felt like I was pulling a lead weight to start, but soon warmed up up the castle hill. Have to relearn the overgrown bits! Exhilarating!

Payback - hubby away for 3 days - no chance of training even if I want to!

Wednesday Sep 18, 2013 #

Note

End of maternity leave and back to work (for a rest!)

Tuesday Sep 17, 2013 #

Note

Travel back - v long day!

Monday Sep 16, 2013 #

Note

Beach! Swim in the sea. Sunbathe. Bit of touristing. Train with views galore back to Bastia airport. Fail at hitching to the campsite. Jammying a eurocamp style tent with beds for the last night.

So to sum up
The book says it's the toughest in Europe, and it really was tough! No switching off - you have to watch every single step!
It's really really serious if the weather isn't good - slippy rock and most of it is above the height of Ben Nevis.
It's spectacular!

That'll be my brownie points used up then! Thanks hubby!

Walk 3:50:00 [3] 12.0 km (19:10 / km) +235m 17:27 / km

GR20 d'Ortu - Calenzana
Talked ourselves into thinking it was all downhill and it most certainly wasn't to start - scrambling and even a (pointless in the dry) chain! Made it low enough to be in the pine woods before the thunderstorm and heavy rain arrived. Loads of people starting off and coming up - idiots - the rock is so slippy and dangerous in the wet. Straight to the pizzeria to celebrate and meet up with the 2 Dutch and 1 Alaskan guys we'd picked up along the way. Comical hitching to Calvi to camp by the beach. Ahhh, now the proper holiday begins!

Saturday Sep 14, 2013 #

Walk 5:10:00 [3] 8.0 km (38:45 / km) +1050m 23:24 / km

GR20 Carrozzu - d'Ortu
High level option, of course! One of the best days - sunshine and blue skies along with scramble-tastic route - up down up down etc along the ridge. Spectacular.
Again no dinner food to buy but hut meal was much better and lots of it - phew!

Friday Sep 13, 2013 #

Walk 4:35:00 [3] 6.0 km (45:50 / km) +710m 28:48 / km

GR20 Haut Asco - Carrozzu
Straight up for 90 mins with amazing views and sunshine. Bad morning mentally though, as it was H's 1st birthday. Perked up a bit at the top with the scrambles and then the descent across the Spasimata Slabs. Weather rumours suggested even better for the next day (high level ridge route option), so had a short day and got the best camp spot ever - complete with picnic table! No dinner food to buy in the hut so had to have the meal - hungry!

Thursday Sep 12, 2013 #

Walk 5:30:00 [3] 8.0 km (41:15 / km) +757m 28:00 / km

GR20 Tighjettu - Haut Asco
Cirque de la Solitude day, wooo!
Cloudy on the way up, kicked the book's butt on walking time so were first ones at the Cirque apart from the crazy fools up at first light. Peered over the edge into cloud - looked like a cauldron bubbling away! Cleared as we started the descent so could see the sheer verticalness in all its glory. Great fun - chains and scrambling - but actually no harder than anything we'd done since Conca. Super fun scrambling up the other side, bypassing the chains and those clinging to them! Beautiful sunny day once we'd emerged from the top. Tempted by the old GR route along the ridge to double up the day, but the pull of another luxurious warm shower and shop was too great!

Wednesday Sep 11, 2013 #

Walk 6:50:00 [3] 16.0 km (25:38 / km) +1113m 19:01 / km

GR20 Col Vergio - Tighjettu
Savage fox at Vergio - 3 lots of people had their arms bitten/air beds punctured that we spoke to. We escaped with only another attempt at food removal - very lucky!
Great views as we walked up to Ciottulu di Mori of Paglia Orba, but waaaaay too windy to even attempt an ascent with it being a proper scrambling route.
Met an orienteer on the way to Vallone (it was always going to happen!) identified by his Wilfs mug hanging off his KIMM sack! From SARUM none the less!!
Very windy around the hut, but got a fairly decent spot. Really cold overnight again (1683m).

Tuesday Sep 10, 2013 #

Walk 4:40:00 [3] 17.0 km (16:28 / km) +475m 14:27 / km

GR20 Manganu - Col Vergio
Local fox tried to steal our food at some early hour, but couldn't get the rucksack out of the tent - phew! Really cold overnight .....brrr .... wish I'd brought my silk liner! Part of the day was relatively flat and non rocky, wow! Still some excitement in the cloud near Capu a u Tozzo though! Hot hot hot showers and a shop at the Col - luxury!

Monday Sep 9, 2013 #

Walk 6:00:00 [3] 10.0 km (36:00 / km) +740m 26:17 / km

GR20 Petra Piana - Manganu
Highest part of the GR20.
Sat in hut until light and set off expecting to have to turn back due to gales and low cloud. Didn't get any worse though, and by the time we got up to the col it was much better. Amazing day's walk - lots of scrambling, a chain section (although as we were going up didn't really need it) and views most of the time in between the cloud wizzing past. Good omelette at the hut!

Sunday Sep 8, 2013 #

Walk 4:00:00 [3] 11.0 km (21:49 / km) +910m 15:26 / km

GR20 l'Onda - Petra Piana
Set off on the high route but when we got to the ridge, there was a high risk of lightning. So about turned (~40mins) and did the low level route instead. Shame, but not worth the risk. Turned out sunny later on so good chilling at the hut after a short day. Overnight however...gales. We were at 1842m though, so not unexpected! Had to re-peg tent at 1am, and decamped ~5am to save it!!

Saturday Sep 7, 2013 #

Walk 6:00:00 [3] 11.0 km (32:44 / km) +1180m 21:18 / km

GR20 Vizzavona - l'Onda
Would have loved to have done the high level Monte d'Oru route but after the double day, needed an 'easy' day! Long climb out of Vizzavona, fab views on the col of the next day's walk then along the ridge to the hut (camping in the animal pen!).

Friday Sep 6, 2013 #

Walk 9:20:00 [3] 30.0 km (18:40 / km) +955m 16:06 / km

GR20 Col de Verdi - Vizzavona (double day)
Needed a double day to get a beach day at the end, so sacrificed the high level route to Capanelle to get to Vizzavona a day early. Good lunch at the Bergeries d'E Capanelle before the long descent into Vizzavona. Warm shower for the 2nd day in a row - real luxury! :-) Celebrated half way with a beer, meal out and lots of chocolate!

Thursday Sep 5, 2013 #

Walk 7:45:00 [3] 16.0 km (29:04 / km) +830m 23:05 / km

GR20 Usciolu - Col de Verdi
Great mixture today, walking/scrambling along a long rocky ridge. Windy but still shorts! Warm shower - bliss!

Wednesday Sep 4, 2013 #

Walk 7:55:00 [3] 17.0 km (27:56 / km) +1225m 20:32 / km

GR20 Asinau - Usciolu
Straight up from the hut - huge boulders meant big steps up, so pretty physical. Bagged Monte Alcudina in glorious sunshine, and then a long downhill. Middle section dragged a bit as so hot (possibly the only section of the GR20 that is "easy" (relatively)!) before scrambling along the Arete a Monda (wind picked up in the afternoon) and down to the hut. Bad day head-wise in the middle section; missing the family! Left ITB and right knee niggles but nothing serious.

Tuesday Sep 3, 2013 #

Walk 4:25:00 [3] 8.0 km (33:08 / km) +865m 21:30 / km

GR20 Bavella - Asinau
Beautiful day again, so went for the high route option. Exciting (=tricky, slow etc!) route once back on the high GR20 including 1 chain section. The Bavella area is spectacular, and plenty of great day walks.

Walk 1:20:00 [3]

Unfortunately followed the wrong blobs out of Bavella and being an orienteer got my compass out and didn't admit defeat for ages, so 1hr20 of the wrong high level route, oops. Meant we bagged another mt though (up to Criox Leccie)!

Monday Sep 2, 2013 #

Walk 7:45:00 [3] 19.0 km (24:28 / km) +1670m 17:00 / km

GR20 Conca - Bavella
5 min run as warm up to get a baguette for lunch!!
Scorching hot, amazing views. Gardien at Refuge Paliri (spaced out on smtg!) had a fair few gas canisters that people had given in on their last day, of which 1 fitted! :-) Thunderstorm during the last hour or so, but as there was no camping at Bavella it didn't matter! Kit dried on the radiators at the Gite d'Etape, hot shower, good shop for supplies. Some French nutters turned up at 930pm having just done 3 stages in 1 day ... hobbling badly!

Sunday Sep 1, 2013 #

Note

Fly out to Corsica - crack of dawn start. Made it to Conca in a day though. Hot and sunny - ahhhhh - lovely!
