Orienteering 3:00:00 [3] **** 4.9 km (36:44 / km)

(Feb!) Map Of The Month Training with Dad and Roz at Balavil near Kingussie. Very technical; hilly and tough underfoot - so probably not the best training for the JK! Did two courses, one 2.9km in the steep complex part and the other 2km mainly in the open moor bit. Was good fun and weather was nice for once!

Running intervals 30:00 [4] 7.0 km (4:17 / km)

Intervals!!! Only the second or third time i've done them but after the Start weekend im trying to do them more. 1km x 3 quite fast (3.41/3.54/3.43)and 3 slower. I'm not sure if thats the right distance or no. of reps and i think they are meant to be done on the flat and its quite up and down at Spittal!!!
For once it wasn't raining and the path wasn't too wet except at the bit where you have to squeeze through the gorse bushes which was really muddy.

Orienteering race (Big Wood SARUM National) 52:02 [5] *** 5.7 km (9:08 / km) +145m 8:06 / km

The first selection race this year... and my second proper event 2008!
This area was sooooo different to anywhere I have ever been before!!!Couldn't find the first control. The path looked like all the other rides and I ran straight past it. Then didn't really know what a rootstock was supposed to be... some tree roots! A very strange feature but I found it eventually! The rest of the course was ok but a bit scrappy as it was really hard to find attack points for a lot of the controls so it felt a bit 'run and hope'ish for a few controls. I also lost time on number 9 because for some reason I thought an area of green looked like it might be scattered trees so I ran all the way up the side of the valley and back down again for no reason! Oh well at least next time I go down to another area like it I (hopefully) will know what to expect and won't make the same mistakes!
