Harvester relay 1st leg for Lakeland.
What a whole lot of fun.
Didn't quite know what to expect on this, thought I might be able to keep with the pack in around 5th place. Having not done any races in over a year, other than small local events, I was a bit of an unknown to the organisers and wasn't given a GPS tracker to carry (given to top 10 seeds).
The start was a bit hectic with people spreading out in all directions before most converged on a small path leading out of the field. I was near the back here and just focussed on getting across the stream and onto the big path. Once on the path I started moving forwards and arrived at the 1st control in 3rd place, 2nd control was gaffled and everyone went off left while I went straight and got to my 2nd control 1st. At this point I had no idea who was leading and what the gaffling was like but assumed there must be some ahead of me. 5th control, Alastair Buckley caught me as I made an error trying to go straight in from the junction. From here on we exchanged the lead several times as I was running faster but hesitating a lot more. I tried a different route on 18 hoping to get a lead but didn't execute properly and came to the control with AB. Pushed on a bit through the spectator and managed to open up a gap going up the steep little hill to 22. Massive hesitation after crossing the stream to the last control as I wasn't exactly sure of where I was but just gambled and thankfully ran up the field in the lead to hand over to Heather with a 20s lead over Nick Barrable.
I had to ask Chris at the end how I'd done because although I had an idea I didn't know for sure whether I was 1st back.
Great head-2-head race. Wish I could've been more confident making decisions because I was holding quite a bit back physically.
A few other good runs and a couple of howlers brought us into 9th overall.
With a mostly developing squad, we can only really get better from here.
