Second day. Distance estimated, watch gave up after about 2h30 (still quite some power . more than 6 hours running =))
start -1) I decided very quickly to take the path right away from the start, then climb the hill and cut over the saddle down to the control.
Just after getting up at the other end of the depression, we realised that we could have stayed at the same height by crossing over the campsite. Never mind we went up the hill (had to tell M to slow down again quite a few times). Arriving at the top, we looked down and thought "no way we are going down here" . A few meters to the left we found quite a good grassy patch to go down. Not many bushes, but very slippery. That hill scared the hell out of me, especially when other people were loosening stones above us and they came tumbling down just a few meters to our right....
Came down just about 20m next to the control - perfect.
2) along the path, tried to run and calm my nerves
3) Didn't want to end up in the forest, so climbed quite a bit before starting to cross over. Luckily hit a little path that lead us through the second forest and right to the cabin with the control
4) Again a harsh climb was expecting us. Especially the second part was real jungle style, didn't see much, just hoped to get out eventually. Was really dead when trying to run on the next path, my legs were just not cooperative anymore.Down again to the control.
5) And then we could stay on a nice road for a short while, before having to climb again. Another slightly sloped path and one more murderous downhill. Was too tired to lift my legs properly when once more climbing over some rusty barbed wire. Quite some nasty scratch along my shin (had to update my tetanus vaccination on Monday). Took the same path as yesterday, this time it felt like we could run even more of it. Had that control definitely in the wrong spot (coordinates were weird) but from the control description it would have been obvious that the control has to be more the right. Finally followed the little trail from the other runners that lead us to the control.
6) another control where you couldn't avoid the ascent. Had a good route choice towards the end. Followed the path as long as possible and then cut through cleanly.
7) Good and fast leaving the control. But were soon stopped at the first river. Found a spot to cross it and went on. Some other (older both male) team closed up and wouldn't let us go. They were very confident that we were right, so we ignored our ringing alarm bells and kept going. Finally relocated when we saw a cabin that was not expected, and realised that we were quite a bit too high (although fortunately not that much too far). Just saw some other teams leaving the control when we started to head down.
8) Pushed again to 8, did not manage to distance ourselves from the other team
9) Finally one more flat and downhill to the last control. Here we finally got away from the other team (they were higher up in the result list anyway as they had been faster on Saturday and even had quite an age bonus)
The second day felt much better physically. Had the feeling that I could actually run major parts of the race, which had definitely not been the case yesterday. Not so sure if I'd do it again, was a bit extreme for me (physically and emotionally). But definitely glad to have invested some money into lightweight gear (tent 1kg, backpack 550g and tent footprint and mat in one for 350g).
Just managed to finish in the top 10, actually quite a lot better than I had expected (and aspired). Surviving had been my main aim this weekend.
