Sunday Jun 29

Event: ROC - 2nd Annual Adventure Run

Orienteering (Score-O 24 controls) 2:24:00 [5]*** 9 km (16:00 / km) +500m 12:31 / km
shoes: Brooks - screw shoes mudders
Team Jonesy. Guess he won't need a long walk tonight.

Route:
Went south first, then north and finished with east. Getting much better at reading the map in regards to the topo lines - not going up the wrong spur, etc.

Hot and lots of hills. I've always hated hills. Definitely a 5 despite not running.

I have to determine the answer to the question of whether you stay 'up' in the hills and get the high ones, and then go down and loop around to get the low ones rather than zigzag up and down the hills.

But it was lots of fun.

It will be interesting to see if I get poison ivy. One large one went right between my legs - could be ugly.

R took a good fall right on his coccyx. Made a great 'whump' noise too. I went down maybe 3 times.

Main wildlife was lots of frogs jumping around out there.

Worst bit of orienteering was going around on the creek side of the swamp. should have gone around the other way. On the other hand, it was my first time at this park. Next time I'll know.

Enjoyed seeing others on the course and guessing which routes they took.

Jonesy was given a bath to transform him from swamp-doggy prior to E returning from Canada.

Ended up in second for the score-O. All the usual studs did adventure running or were off on vacation.

Lots of cute tiny (1 cm) frogs all over after the various rains. Hope that means that it will be a low mosquito season...

Saturday Jun 28

walk dog 17:30 [3]1.75 mi (10:00 / mi)

Barely beat the rain.

Felt pretty beat up myself. I'm, uh, 'tapering' for orienteering tomorrow. Yes, that must be it. Never done a score-O before.

Friday Jun 27

No good stuff to pick up today. I did notice that someone snagged the other two flower pots from the pile on Locke Ave. I'm not the only pack rat in town!

Tuesday Jun 24

Run with dog 17:30 [3]
shoes: defyance (sic)
Was going to run further, but a neighbor was throwing out flowerpots - just the size I needed for repotting the flowers at work which are starting to look somewhat unhappy.... I must have looked funny running along holding two flowerpots, a dog and a poop bag (ok, so that was put in the flowerpot).

Yesterday, while walking the dog, I got some brand new plant stakes for supporting my tomatos.

Nothing like walking the dog to encourage my scavenging behaviors... Sure - I'll blame it on the dog.
C • Just don't run on trash-day... 3
walk dog 44:00 [1]2.2 mi (20:00 / mi)
Gorgeous evening. Talked with man picking cherries from his 2 trees. Says he's never had a crop like this before. Wonder if this is where the cherry pits that appear on our porch is coming from (about 1 mile away).

I'll need to verify the distance on Google maps - took some of the City paths between neighborhoods.

Monday Jun 23

Felt pretty good - easier than running in the early morning. However, Jonesy had to rest half way through - the black fur is like solar panels.

Thursday Jun 19

Run with dog 17:30 [3]1.75 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: defyance (sic)
Later in morning - getting hot. The dog wanted to turn back early, which is not his usual attitude...

Still feeling the all-nighter. Have pullled more of those at work than I ever did in college / grad school.

Sunday Jun 8

Digging/Hammering 2:00:00 [2]
shoes: Yes
Hoses, putting in edging, planting corn (under the grass cover, the dirt is completely dust (and rock). Wow. Need some rain.

Hope my 'interesting' planting techniques work, because corn sure beats things that grow well, like zucchini (yuck).

Great workout, because I'm completely sore and tired afterwards.

Saturday Jun 7

Digging/Hammering 2:00:00 [2]
Gotta get the beans into the ground... more of the plastic beds, but this time, I knew how to do it and was very efficient.

Another $200 at home despot. Got everything on the list, except for what my wife asked for (no snapdragons).

I used to love going to hardware stores (Davis Hardware). Something about the big box stores kills the spirit. Of course, having 2 fully laden carts disappear (for reshelving?) after looking for stuff for an hour over the past couple months will dampen the spirit.

Friday Jun 6

Run with dog 17:30 [3]1.75 mi (10:00 / mi)

Ick. Muggy city.

double ick.

Thursday Jun 5

Run with dog 20:00 [3]2.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: defyance (sic)
Out late last night at school, so slept in a bit. Didn't stretch as much before running, so was somewhat tight.

It's going to be one ugly weekend - 90's and humid. Won't do much running, so needed to get something in, even if it was a lame workout.

Wednesday Jun 4

walk dog 15:00 [1]0.75 mi (20:00 / mi)
(rest day) shoes: new balance
Needed to sleep in this morning, as I was barely functional at work due to poor sleeping for previous 2 days.
walk dog 10:00 [1]0.5 mi (19:58 / mi)

Tuesday Jun 3

Run with dog 10:00 [2]1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: defyance (sic)
Need more sleep
Digging/Hammering 1:00:00 [2]
Making beds/frame for green beans. Lots of digging.

Used hardware from http://www.frameitall.com - Given the cost, it's kind of flimsy. However, it was a lot quicker than building it up using outdoor lumber (started and finished in one evening).

So far, I plan to leave it 'open' (no screen or chicken wire). If the birds / deer / groundhog get it, then it is a learning experience for next year. On the other hand, I may put chicken wire on top for someplace for the beans to climb on.

If it is 1/2 as productive as the "garden" in Wisconsin, then we should be eating vegetables until we are sick of them.

Monday Jun 2

Run with dog 25:00 [3]2.5 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: defyance (sic)
Ran with soft lifts rather than orthotics because of sore heel padding on left foot.

Not sure how far I ran - came back to house after first dog poop, then went out again (and he went again - on rooster-house's lawn) Luckily I carry extra bags...

Nice to be able to run again in AM.
walk dog 10 [1]0.5 mi (19 / mi)

Sunday Jun 1

Digging/Hammering (General Gardening) 1:00:00 [1]
shoes: new balance
Gardening for 5 hours, only will count 1. Luckily it was an overcast/cooler day than last weekend. Good for putting the final touches on the raised bed and planting (peppers & tomatoes from Bristol's)

walk dog 25:00 [1]1.25 mi (20:00 / mi)
Still stiff & somewhat sore, but not at all painful.
