Thursday Jun 30

Orienteering race (sprint) 30:10 [5] **** 3 km (10:03 / km)
spiked:8/15c slept:6.5 shoes: VJ pro I
NEOC meet at Needham town forest. Made a lot of dumb mistakes. I'm fitter than I've been in a long time so I guess I need to slow down at critical points like, say, taking a bearing, instead of just running hard continuously.

Sprint - Splits

Wednesday Jun 29

running (road) 34:16 [2] **** 4.07 mi (8:25 / mi)
slept:9.0 shoes: asics GT-2090
Mass Ave. - River St. loop, in the morning (~8:40am). It was warmer and sunnier than past few runs, plus my legs were definitely still tired from last night. Took along another copy of Hogencamp, this time with a shorter course on it, so I finished the course in ~27 minutes. Once again, it seemed easier to read the map. I was also more focused than last night; my mind didn't drift at all.

Tuesday Jun 28

running (road) 40:00 [2] **** 4.62 mi (8:39 / mi)
slept:8.0 shoes: asics GT-2090
Mass Ave. to Longfellow and then up Beacon hill and back to Mass Ave., with a bit of extra looping around to add some time. Took along another copy of the Hogencamp map, but decided that either I drew an easier course or I'm getting better at reading it, so I gave it 4 stars for technical intensity. There was one leg that threw me, where the only route choice seemed to be straight through a swath of mountain laurel, and I really didn't do well on that leg. It's exactly the kind of leg I tend to get lost on in real woods, too - lots of green and not much to navigate off of. To top things off, I left the trail to plunge into the green without being absolutely sure of what I was doing, which Will has told me not to do countless times (although I was thinking about it very hard).

Sunday Jun 26

running long (road) 1:11:37 [2] ***** 8.1 mi (8:51 / mi)
slept:9.0 shoes: asics GT-2090
Dusk Anderson-Science Museum loop with Bosworth. Weather was pretty nice after a hot day. Legs felt great from the time I woke up this morning until right about the science museum on the home stretch, at which point they steadily became more and more ready to stop. After some stretching when I got back they felt fine. Was starting to feel the need for water by the time I got back. You who read my log - about how long will you run for before you decide to take water with you? Took another 1:10000 Hogencamp map with a different course on it that I finished after ~40 minutes. Was a little more focused this time than last, but my mind drifts from time to time. Bosworth mentioned that I slow down a bit every time I look down at the map. I guess that's not such a bad thing.

Saturday Jun 25

running (road) 34:41 [2] 6.5 km (5:20 / km)
slept:8.5 shoes: asics GT-2090
Mass Ave. - River St. loop with Bosworth. 82F when we got back at 9:45. Legs felt sluggish after the day off, and I kept having to suck in a lot of air to fill my lungs, but that was just the weather. Forgot to bring a map with me.

Thursday Jun 23

running (road) 49:20 [2] ***** 5.7 mi (8:39 / mi)
slept:8.5 shoes: asics GT-2090
Science Museum - BU bridge loop with Bosworth. Made a dozen 1:10000 copies of a section of the Hogencamp map yesterday, so I took one along and gave Bosworth a copy to try to introduce him to O. I think I'll have to explain a bit more about it before he'll get hooked. Anyway, quads were a bit tired on the run but otherwise felt fine. Pace a bit more relaxed than other recent runs. Rest day tomorrow, 4mi Saturday, 8mi Sunday. Hopefully the weather won't be as bad as the forecast suggests.

Wednesday Jun 22

running (road) 48:08 [3] 9.1 km (5:17 / km)
slept:7.0 shoes: asics GT-2090
Morning run with Bosworth. Mass Ave. - JFK St. loop. Evidently we managed to just miss the rain. Pace felt pretty good, legs were a little tired from last night, though.

Tuesday Jun 21

Orienteering race 29:40 [5] **** 2.96 km (10:01 / km) +90m 8:42 / km
spiked:10/12c slept:7.0 shoes: VJ pro I
NEOC sprint at Blue Hills. I felt great physically, but really screwed up navigationally. Basically didn't pay enough attention to the map and ended up going off the map on one control (and simultaneously adding about 5 contours), plus mispunching on another control and then going back to punch the right control. Need to run with a map more.

Monday Jun 20

Note
slept:8.0 (rest day)

Sunday Jun 19

running (road) 45:37 [3] 5.47 mi (8:20 / mi)
slept:8.0
Ran down to and around government center, then came back via chinatown & copley, with Bosworth. He was pushing the pace a bit, but I don't remember quite where we went so I'm just guessing at the pace. Felt good, though. I was starting to get a bit tired towards the end, but could easily have gone for another mile. Calves were a bit sore from yesterday but didn't bother me. Tomorrow's a rest day and then NEOC sprint on tuesday.

Saturday Jun 18

Orienteering 2:59:48 [3] **** 11.62 km (15:28 / km) +440m 13:01 / km
spiked:12/21c slept:6.0 shoes: VJ pro I
UNO meet at Fox Forest. The woods there are really nice - very open, conifer forest, not much green, a lot of rock features, not too steep. Weather was great, too - cool and damp. Unfortunately my orienteering was pretty bad and I made several large mistakes. Mostly I couldn't get myself to hold a bearing and I kept drifting off. Finally started to orienteer well after #16. I'm going to call it training because it was too long for me to be "racing" the whole way.

Blue - Splits

Friday Jun 17

running (road) 43:05 [2] 7 km (6:09 / km)
shoes: asics GT-2090
Bexley-Simmons-River St.-Mass Ave.-Bexley, with Lori.

Thursday Jun 16

running race (track) 6:06 [5] 1.0 mi (6:05 / mi) vdot: 47.5
slept:8.0 shoes: asics GT-2090
mile time trial with Bosworth. Soccer on tuesday really killed this.
running warm up/down (track) 15:00 [2] 1.75 mi (8:34 / mi)
shoes: asics GT-2090

Wednesday Jun 15

Note
uh-oh, missed a day.

Tuesday Jun 14

running (road) 36:49 [3] 7 km (5:16 / km)
slept:8.0 (sick) shoes: asics GT-2090
Ran to beacon hill via longfellow, then around boston common and back along commonwealth to mass ave then back across the river, with Bosworth. Kinda fast, but felt pretty good. Weather was nice - overcast, cool, periodic mist.
soccer (grass) 1:15:00 [4]
shoes: diadora tornates
Shouldn't have, but a group of Bexley people went to play and I hadn't played with them in a long time so I felt obliged. Fortunately I'm mostly not sick at this point, so I don't think I made it any worse.

Monday Jun 13

Note
slept:8.0 (sick) (rest day)
I think I got a bit dehydrated on the run yesterday and I also seem to have picked up some sort of bug. Hopefully it won't last long.

Sunday Jun 12

running long (road) 1:08:18 [2] 7.73 mi (8:49 / mi)
slept:8.5 weight:160lbs shoes: asics GT-2090
Ran downtown to NC State, then back and around the neighborhood for a bit. Guessing at the pace again, but it was definitely a bit slower than normal. Legs were tired from yesterday and quads were tight again. 87F after I got back at 4:30.

Saturday Jun 11

Orienteering 1:00:00 [3] **** 5 km (12:00 / km) +160m 10:21 / km
spiked:6/11c slept:9.0 weight:162lbs shoes: VJ pro I
BOK just remapped the north section of Umstead, which had a tornado come through almost 15 years ago now, I think, but somehow managed to survive the past few hurricanes and ice storms without much damage. I got a map from Ruth on wednesday and was debating this morning whether or not to go, but I had been planning to, so I followed through with the plan. I sure am glad I went. The woods are really nice and runnable, which is more than I can say for most of the maps I've been on recently. Aside from some 15 year old trees down here and there, which really aren't bad to jump over, there's not much to impede running, in particular, there's not much green stuff (in the middle of June!). I also haven't found any ticks yet. It would be nice to see an A event here if it survives the coming hurricane season.

Legs felt pretty good. My right thigh was hurting yesterday but felt fine while running. A little sore now. Right ankle seems to have something wrong with it that's aggravated by having my foot bent back, which was a problem at the DVOA meet but hasn't been a problem since until today. Weather was nice (82F and 60% humidity at 12:30, so I guess it was under 80 at 10:30 when I started).

Thursday Jun 9

running (road) 26:53 [2] 3.13 mi (8:34 / mi)
slept:9.0 weight:160lbs shoes: asics GT-2090
Same loop as yesterday. I don't actually know how far it is, so I'm just guessing at paces, but obviously there's some discrepancy in there somewhere. Hamstring felt fine, but quads were a little tight.

Wednesday Jun 8

running (road) 27:47 [2] 3.21 mi (8:39 / mi)
slept:9.0 weight:160lbs shoes: asics GT-2090
Along old wakeforest to brookside, back along brookside out to jones, back home along person. Weather wasn't too bad, certainly better than it's been the last few days. Hamstring felt fine.

Tuesday Jun 7

running (road) 26:02 [2] 3.0 mi (8:41 / mi) +75m 5:00 / km
slept:7.5 weight:160lbs shoes: asics GT-2090
Morning run around lake johnson with Grace. Left hamstring hurt a bit, maybe will take it easier this week.

Sunday Jun 5

Orienteering race 1:13:33 [3] *** 5.4 km (13:37 / km)
spiked:14/20c slept:9.0 weight:159lbs shoes: VJ pro I
BOK meet at Lake Johnson. Pretty hot and really humid. Also the place has grown up a lot in the 8 years since the map was last updated which made things a bit sketchy in places. At least one misplaced control which I lost 6 minutes on and another questionable one which I lost 3 or 4 minutes on.

Saturday Jun 4

running (road) 24:28 [2] 2.82 mi (8:39 / mi)
slept:8.5 weight:160lbs shoes: asics GT-2090
In Raleigh for a little while. Weather's not as hot as I was expecting - 80F and 63% humidity. Ran along old wakeforest down to brookside, which I took back into Oakwood.

Thursday Jun 2

running (road) 48:58 [2] 5.7 mi (8:34 / mi)
slept:8.5 shoes: asics GT-2090
Mass Ave. - Science Museum - BU bridge - Mass Ave. with Bosworth. Legs were tired towards the end, especially after the climb onto the BU bridge. Stomach started feeling hungry around 20 minutes, but didn't get worse after that. Warm day (~70 and sunny).

Wednesday Jun 1

running (road) 33:01 [2] 6.1 km (5:25 / km)
slept:9.0 shoes: asics GT-2090
Mass Ave. - Science Museum and back along the esplanade, with Bosworth. Were a little slow getting to the science museum but picked up the pace on the return leg.
