| Felt much better today. Preran again, and started 4min back from Ross again, but was probably never close to him. Faceplanted on #2 for the first time in a while, bashing my lip on a fallen tree trunk. Was spitting gobs of blood for the next 5 controls. Awesome. Screwed up 2 controls by ~30sec each and mispunched one, for a big fat DSQ. Sucks. I was kind of ticked that there was another control so close to mine, until PG smacked me into reality by pointing out that I was just dumb. Not much to be done for that but not be dumb in the future.
Had I punched the correct control, I'd've been 3rd today and 3rd overall, ahead of Clem and 4secs behind Ross. Lost most of my time to Eddie on the long legs through the woods. Interesting. Much good to be taken from this race. And I guess I've learned to check my codes, or at the very least, look at the damn map.

| Boulder Dash day 1 (blue) in New Hampshire. Not a great race, but turns out it wasn't a great race for anyone else either. Preran, and started 4 minutes back from Ross, who I caught at #10 when he made some big error. Lots of small mistakes and poor contact. Woods were really thick, which didn't help. Felt like I was drifting the whole time. | ||

| CSU track workout. Just Ross and me today. 4x800 @ 3min pace.
2:57.5 (1:29.4 + 1:28.1) / 2:30 rest 2:59.1 / 2:53 rest 2:59.9 (1:29.9 + 1:30.0) / 2:51 rest 3:00.8 (1:30.8 + 1:29.0) The rest bouts were 400m jogging. Ross wanted to do 30sec rest, but I was pretty sure the Daniels workouts specified 3min on, 2min off. I think the last time I did this was last year. I distinctly remember that workout being awful, while today's wasn't that bad, though I think a fifth interval would have been really hard to keep on pace. Of course, last year I was running in the blazing NC sun in the middle of the day...

| Leg 4 of the 4pt relay at the relay champs. My mind just wasn't here today. First 7 controls were fine, if rough. Then I just stopped paying attention on #8 and had a bunch of small mistakes after that. I also felt slow, though not weak, which is kind of weird. | ||
Saturday Sep 22 | ||
| Event: Sprint Series Final & US Relay Champs | ||
| Orienteering race 30:03 | ||
| 28c shoes: Adidas Novas | ||
| First two sprints at the SS finals. Several big mistakes and stomach problems had me a ways back on the first one. Made a ~1min error on the first control of the second one, but was fine after that. Just slow, apparently. | ||
| Orienteering race (sprint) 17:28 [5] *** 3.15 km (5:33 / km) | ||
| 22c shoes: Adidas Novas | ||
| SS Final. Was leading around a pack for the first three loops, then made a really dumb error on #18, which cost me about 1:15. Not a great day of racing; didn't get much sleep during the week and was mostly thinking about the relays tomorrow. Poor concentration on the here and now. | ||

| cycling warm up/down 20:00 [2] | ||
| Biking over to Pine Hill. This hardly counts as training, especially considering the amount of unlogged biking I do. But, I was biking to O-training. I just ended up not doing that because it was dark by the time I got there. | ||

| Event: NEOC Great Brook Farm | ||
| Orienteering race 1:04:00 [4] *** 7.1 km (9:01 / km) | ||
| spiked:16/19c shoes: Adidas Novas | ||
| Red course at Great Brook Farm. Loused up the first control (seemed like there were some extra boulders in there?) and the 15th control (again, extra boulders; map is pretty sketchy). Otherwise a pretty good run. Comparing splits with Vanessa afterwards, she is fast! Will be an interesting relay champs. | ||

| Shadowed Alex on a course over at Hammond Pond. Much opportunity for improvement on her part, but she's looking for the right stuff. We were actually out for more like an hour, but some standing around, etc. Nice weather - cool, raining; typical early fall day. | ||
| soccer 1:10:00 | ||

| Game with the WTR out at Weston(?) High School. Won 5-1. Scored 1 goal and was blatantly fouled on another opportunity resulting in a pk goal. Pretty shitty game, though. I picked off 3 or 4 balls and had a couple more breakaways that I loused up. Need to finish better. Felt pretty good despite the morning's activities. | ||

| running (road) 35:30 [2] 4.4 mi (8:04 / mi) | ||

| running (road) 38:41 [1] 3.9 mi (9:55 / mi) | ||

| Run with Lori along the Charles. She was feeling a bit dehydrated so there was some walking after the 25' mark. Some crazy road race along the Charles was taking up the whole sidewalk and running in the opposite direction, which kind of sucked. I think I saw Jenn at the front of the pack. | ||
| running (treadmill) 20:00 | ||
| shoes: Gel Cumulus 2006 | ||
| The run with Lori left my workout somewhat unfulfilled, but I had some stuff with me, so I didn't feel like running anywhere, hence the treadmill. Jacked the slope up to 8 for two bouts of 4min each. Not a bad way to do hills, actually (I think it's Daniels' preferred method, even). | ||

| Ross's training at Hammond Pond. I got there a bit late so Pia had already gone out, and it was just me and Ross. We decided to alternate legs. Turns out neither of us had remembered to bring a compass, but that wasn't a problem. In fact, I should probably never run with a compass there since I know it so well by now. | ||

Sunday Sep 9 | ||
| Orienteering race 1:13:19 [4] ***** 7.9 km (9:17 / km) | ||
| spiked:12/14c shoes: Adidas Novas | ||
| An awesome run on the blue course at Pawtuckaway to end the weekend. It was wet and raining, which always makes me feel stronger. I started out 3 minutes back from Ross and caught him at #5. We met up at the next 4 controls, until #10 when I stayed on the trail for longer and got mixed up in a marsh, losing 2 minutes. I subsequently almost caught him again by the end. I think he was a lot more tired from yesterday than I was. Today was in stark contrast to yesterday morning. Even when I screwed up #10, I was able to relocate fairly quickly, and apart from that I was in constant contact with the map (well, slight bobble on #4). I was moving pretty quickly, too, and I kept up a good speed for the full 73 minutes. | ||
| Note | ||
| Looks like this run garnered more AP ranking points than my NAOC middle distance last year. Feels good to have more than one anomalously high result. | ||

Saturday Sep 8 | ||
| Event: UNO Camping Weekend | ||
| Orienteering race 1:41:30 [2] ***** 7.9 km (12:51 / km) | ||
| spiked:8/15c shoes: Adidas Novas | ||
| Blue course at Pawtuckaway. I woke up hungry and didn't eat until ~10 I think. Then I went running at 11:30 or so and figured I didn't need to bring anything since it was only 7.9k. I went out hard-ish and I completely bonked on the way to #5. After getting some water at #7 I was able to run a bit. My route was littered with sloppy mistakes. I kept going because I wanted to pull something positive out of it, and not finish with exclusively negative thoughts. Fortunately this was the low point of the weekend. | ||
| Orienteering (line/bus-o) 45:00 [2] ***** 3 km (15:00 / km) | ||
| spiked:4/6c shoes: Adidas Novas | ||
| Barb's bus-o at Pawtuckaway. I was the D bus, which went through some really tricky terrain. On two of the controls I arrived right as I was supposed to be leaving (no time for coffee and donuts, yo!). It was a seriously legit line-o; very good training, and just what I needed to whip myself into shape after the morning's fiasco. | ||
| Orienteering (night-o) 2:08:51 | ||
| spiked:13/14c shoes: Adidas Novas | ||
| JJ's wicked hard night-o at Pawtuckaway. I ate a lot for dinner and had a bunch of lemonade stuff, so I was totally up to 2 hours of fuel-burning. I'd say it was about half slow jog and about half walking, with the rest crazy crashing through dense underbrush. Definitely incurred my fair share of scrapes. After Ross took off from #1, I figured he was way ahead, and stayed more or less with PG up until #9. At that point he was a little behind me and I wasn't sure what he would do if he found the control - would he punch it and run along as if nothing had happened, leaving me stranded and lost in the dark? Needless to say I wasn't totally confident of where I was, and looking over my shoulder to check up on him didn't help much. Pretty soon I yelled, "I'm lost" and he said something similar, so we thrashed around a bit more and I looked down at my map to see if it was possible to bail out to anywhere, and I found Mymeeba Pond not too far away so I called out, "I'm bailing to the pond". I don't know if PG heard me well or not, but I saw his light running around in the rocks when I was down at the pond. I guess sometime around then he decided to bail too and so by the time I got to the control he was nowhere to be seen. I called out, "Peter!" but heard nothing, so I went on. Apparently he was thrashing around for another 15 minutes or so. In the mean time Ross, who managed to get lost on (I think) 6-9 passed PG and was apparently now behind me. I didn't see him until the finish. The rest of the course was trod with caution, as I figured I was probably now well behind Ross, Ernst (who I figured was with Ross) and PG (who I thought had found 9 and gone on before I got there) and therefore my only hope was to not screw up. I didn't, and was surprised to turn in my punch card at the finish and hear, "congratulations, you won!" Huh? Where's Ross? And Ernst? And Peter?
Physically, I felt spectacular when I finished. Nothing like 2 hours of slow-going bush-whacking to clear out all the waste products from your various brokennesses and loosen up the muscles.

| Pia's training at Prospect Hill. Mostly short legs, interspersed with some longer ones. Started 3 min back from Ross and caught him on the way to 21, then stopped thinking and completely bombed the rest of the course. It was getting dark so I eventually gave up on the last one. I took it fast at the semi-intentional expense of accuracy, and I'm glad I was able to keep up the intensity for as long as I did. I'll have to be a bit more accurate this weekend. | ||
