Wednesday Apr 30

cycling warm up/down 1:00:00 [2]
slept:9.0
Between Harvard & Pine Hill. Still feeling a bit sick.
Orienteering race (sprint) 18:28 [5] *** 3 km (6:09 / km)
spiked:15/15c shoes: Adidas Novas
Sprint 1 at Pine Hill. Was moving pretty quickly, got stuck in some green around the first control, but otherwise it was quite straightforward. Not sure exactly how far.
Orienteering race (sprint) 18:28 [4] *** 2.9 km (6:22 / km) +130m 5:12 / km
spiked:15/15c shoes: Adidas Novas
Sprint 2. More tired on this one, so moving a little slower.

Tuesday Apr 29

strength 3:00 [5]
slept:9.0 (sick)
Some core stuff before going to bed. Dead tired and feeling a little sick from the weekend.

Monday Apr 28

running 35:00 [2]
shoes: Adidas Novas
Run from Boris's apartment with Ross and PG. PG got us lost, but not too bad. Uppsala is so much more pleasant than Somerville.
Note
Tiomila was really a lot of fun. Thanks to everyone on the CSU team, particularly Boris for getting it all organized, and Leif for the excellent coaching support. Looking forward to next time.

Sunday Apr 27

Orienteering race (night-o) 1:09:42 [5] **** 6.9 km (10:06 / km)
16c slept:5.0 shoes: Adidas Novas
Leg 3 of Tiomila. Matthias handed off to me at about 1:15am. Winning time on the leg was just under 40 minutes. Felt awesome running at night, probably a little too awesome. Lost about 12 minutes on number 2 after being about 50m too short on several attacks. After that, I was moving fast, got a little off-line on number 6, losing another 2 or 3 minutes, but otherwise just some small hesitations/mistakes. Only considerable following was to #9. Swedish woods are so much fun to run through. Pia's headlamp was excellent.

Saturday Apr 26

Event: Tiomila 2008

Friday Apr 25

Note
In transit to Tiomila.

Thursday Apr 24

running 30:00 [2] 3.43 mi (8:44 / mi)
shoes: Mizuno WR VI 07
Easy jog around the river. Eliot-Western, plus 5x30sec easy strides.

Wednesday Apr 23

cycling warm up/down 1:00:00
Transit b/w Harvard and Menotomy. Took Mass ave. to the Minuteman trail. Had the company of a couple of bats for part of the way back.
Orienteering race (sprint) 17:08 [5] *** 3.1 km (5:32 / km) +90m 4:50 / km
spiked:13/13c shoes: Mizuno WR VI 07
Event #2 of the 2008 Boston Park Series, at Menotomy Rocks, set by Nikolai. Nice course. I took a look at my compass before the start and then put it in my pocket. Worked out pretty well as I beat Ross by 10 seconds or so, which I would probably have spent checking my compass. Legs a little tired from yesterday's exercises, but I was able to push pretty hard and still keep it clean.

Tuesday Apr 22

running 43:00 [2] 4.57 mi (9:24 / mi)
slept:4.0 shoes: Mizuno WR VI 07
Usual loop, with Lori this time.
strength 5:00 [5]
Same set of conditioning exercises. These have gotten much easier. Should probably add strides to the lineup.

Sunday Apr 20

Orienteering race (relay) 38:18 [5] *** 5.2 km (7:22 / km) +330m 5:35 / km
spiked:21/23c shoes: Adidas Novas
Leg 1 of the 4pt relay. Again, had no energy. Started out following a bunch of cadets, but they took off after Emily Kemp at #4 and I never saw them again. Subsequently I was with Wyatt until #9, when he had a different fork and I decided to go check the control despite being sure it wasn't mine. By this point, totally exhausted, so I took a gu at the next control and now Jon Campbell had caught me. He got a little ahead of me on the long leg to 11, and then I was following him through the spectator controls. Then I made a stupid decision and tried to beat the obvious route to 17 by going around to the left. Turns out it was longer and steeper, so I really bombed out on that one. Need to resist the urge to make creative route choices when tired. Lost about a minute to Jon on that control. Nothing interesting after that. Nice course by Will, with excellent spectating.

Awesome runs by everyone in the CSU contingent, particularly Alex, Ross and Ian.

Relay - Green Leg - Splits

Saturday Apr 19

Event: US Middle Distance and Relay Champs

Orienteering race 43:07 [4] *** 5.33 km (8:05 / km) +260m 6:30 / km
spiked:16/17c shoes: Adidas Novas
Felt incredibly tired from the get-go. Had a stomach cramp by the time I got to the flat part, so even that was slow. I guess I should start running earlier in the day or something. On the up side, it was clean. Not sure how I added 75m of climb to the optimal route.
C • Those numbers looked a litt... 1
Orienteering race (sprint) 15:40 [4] *** 2.6 km (6:02 / km) +75m 5:16 / km
spiked:13/14c shoes: Adidas Novas
Once again, clean and slow. Made a mistake on the spectator control, getting too far right. Probably 30sec.
running warm up/down (trail) 10:00 [2] 1.0 mi (10:00 / mi)
shoes: Adidas Novas
Before/after the middle distance.
stretching warm up/down 5:00 [0]

running tempo (road) 32:00 [3] 4.57 mi (7:00 / mi)
slept:8.0 shoes: Mizuno WR VI 07

stretching warm up/down 5:00 [0]

Tuesday Apr 15

cycling warm up/down 1:00:00
Biking up to the Sheepfold. My watch died, so I'm not actually sure of the time. Haven't biked in a while, so the hills were a bit of a workout.
Orienteering race (sprint) 25:56 [5] *** 3.2 km (8:06 / km) +65m 7:21 / km
spiked:7/11c shoes: Adidas Novas
First event of the 2008 Boston Park Series, at Pine Hill North, set by Alexei. Was able to push pretty hard. Made a few mistakes, probably 2 minutes or so.

Katia and Giovanni's last event in the states before they move to the Netherlands. Will definitely miss having them around.

Monday Apr 14

Note
(rest day)
Feelin' some serious pain today. Damage from the fall not as bad as I had feared, probably will be back to normal in time for the relays.

Sunday Apr 13

Event: 30th Annual Billygoat Run

Orienteering long 2:08:16 [4] *** 13.5 km (9:30 / km) +690m 7:34 / km
22c shoes: Nike Terra Ridge 07
Billygoat at Clear Lake. Tripped and fell into a bed of rocks on the first control, which has left me with some nasty bruises on my right thigh and knee, plus some scrapes. Didn't seem so bad at first, but was really feeling it by the downhill from 18-19.

Started out with no energy. Maybe running 7 miles yesterday was a mistake. Pretty straightforward to 1&2, then took the left option around the left of the marsh to #3, moving pretty slow and too hesitant. Took my first gu at #3 and felt better after that. Slow through the rhododendron, came to #4 at the same time as Balter, then skipped #5, which allowed me to catch up with Ross and Kenny, who I was with through #7 and halfway to #8, before I took a retarded route choice up the crazy steep slope. By this point was quite tired, which probably affected my reasoning. Anyways, by #10 a pack had caught me, though I stayed ahead of them through #13. On 14 I had a huge (probably 3-4 minute) error, running right by the control and correcting in a miserably poor manner, so by this time that crowd I had left at #12 had caught back up to me. The rest was slow and not so clean. Lost some time on #16, then just slow. Made probably 8 minutes of mistakes, and another 5 minutes of giving in to being tired. Nice course, though.

The Goat - Splits

Saturday Apr 12

running 1:00:00 7.0 mi (8:34 / mi)
shoes: Mizuno WR VI 07
Ran over to Tufts, around twice, did 5x30sec strides on the track, then home. Watch died halfway through, so time is a guess.

Wednesday Apr 9

running tempo (dirt/road) 38:08 5.3 mi (7:11 / mi)
shoes: Mizuno WR VI 07
Usual Lyman-Eliot-Western loop, but decided to take it briskly until the return to JFK, which is about 3.85 miles (7:03/mi). Then did 4x30sec strides by the river, same conditioning exercises from Saturday, and ran back to Lyman.
