Orienteering race (sprint) 14:08 [5] **** 2.1 km (6:44 / km) +75m 5:43 / km
spiked:11/12c slept:9.0 shoes: VJ pro I
I lost my e-punch right after 2 on the first sprint, so I didn't finish that one. The second sprint went pretty well though. Eddie started a few seconds late so I basically followed him to 1 and followed him past 2 and then had glimpses of him until 5. Aside from the mistake on 2 spiked every control. Was running reasonably fast, had no one to follow after 3, so I was pleased with my run.

Peter seemed surprised to have trouble catching up to me, which was nice to hear. I think I'm faster on sprints than I should be given my time on longer courses, because I've had more practice with them and with pacing myself for them. I still don't really know how to pace myself to run for the duration of a red course, especially if there's appreciable climb. I'm also not fit enough for longer courses, whereas I can keep up a good pace for the duration of a sprint.
Orienteering 15:00 [2] **** 1.5 km (10:00 / km) +50m 8:34 / km

Continued on half-heartedly to a few of the controls on Sprint #1 after losing my e-punch.

Event: Memorial Day Weekend US Team Fundraiser

Orienteering race 1:39:27 [3] **** 8.21 km (12:07 / km) +310m 10:11 / km
spiked:7/11c slept:9.0 shoes: VJ pro I
Day 1 red at DVOA's memorial day weekend event. Started out well but goofed up #2 and really screwed up #3, then went through a bunch of green and climb for the rest of the way which I was slow in and not motivated for after the early mistakes. Legs were also tired - probably should have taken Saturday off.

Saturday May 28

running (track) 25:49 [2] 4.8 km (5:23 / km)
slept:9.5 shoes: asics GT-2090
Great day, if a bit humid. Legs were a little tired, hopefully they'll be fine tomorrow. Would have preferred to take today off and have run on thursday, but such is life.

Friday May 27

running (road) 34:41 [2] 6.5 km (5:20 / km)
slept:7.5 shoes: asics GT-2090
Mass Ave. - River St. and back along the other side. Was a little fast, but felt ok.

Thursday May 26

Note
(rest day)
Intended to run 4 mi today and take tomorrow off, but got caught up at work and then had to work Bexley desk in the evening.

Wednesday May 25

treadmill 27:17 [2] **** 3.13 mi (8:43 / mi)
slept:8.0 shoes: asics GT-2090
Put off running while it was calmer and ended up wimping out and going to the Z center. Took along a blown up map of Hogencamp Mt. Legs felt fine but stomach gave me some problems.

Tuesday May 24

running (road) 31:35 [3] 6.1 km (5:11 / km)
slept:9.0 shoes: asics GT-2090
Mass Ave. - Science Museum and back along the other side of the river. Raining and windy; pretty crappy weather. Definitely took it a bit too fast. My shins felt like they were working too hard about the time I passed the Science museum, but they felt fine by the time I finished. Legs felt pretty good overall. Should have taken a map with me but didn't think about it.

Green course at Mashamoquet Brook. Woods and weather were really nice. Overshot a few controls.
Orienteering 37:01 [4] **** 3.69 km (10:02 / km) +120m 8:38 / km

Will suggested that he shadow me on a makeshift course after we were done with our other courses. I think this was the best training I've done in a long time, at least since the last time I was at Pawtuckaway. His comments gave me a lot of confidence as well as some things to work on. In particular speed and reducing the map. Thanks, Will!

Includes some instructional time (stopped).

Orienteering race 1:05:36 [3] **** 5.6 km (11:43 / km) +120m 10:35 / km
spiked:6/14c slept:8.5 shoes: VJ pro I
Pretty good run at CSU's Pine Hill meet. I'm being reasonably harsh with 6/14 spikes. Mostly I was just a bit off in approaching the controls, losing maybe 30 seconds on some. My only big error was in approaching #10 from the trail to the east. I got stuck in some green stuff for probably 5-6 minutes.

running warm up/down (road) 8:00 [2] 0.83 mi (9:37 / mi)

Ran from Lyman & Main to the Stonehurst parking lot.
Orienteering race (park-o) 20:04 [4] *** 2.87 km (7:00 / km)
spiked:7/10c shoes: VJ pro I
A nice course by Sanna at Stonehurst. The map was printed without trails. Had there been trails on the map, more optimal route choice would have been available.
Therefore, if I were able to "figure out" where the trails were, I would have been able to capitalize on trail runs. This worked reasonably well for #1 and #5, but I really blew it on #10. On the other hand, I did end up with a fast trail run for #10, even though it was way out of the way. I'd say overall I lost ~2-3 minutes from bad route choice and general mistakes. I felt like I could have pushed harder, too (though probably with more errors) so I'm giving it a 4 intensity.
Orienteering 10:00 [2] *** 1.16 km (8:37 / km)

Picking up the beginner course at Stonehurst.

NEOC Hale reservation sprint. A compact course by Jeff Saeger. Managed to not screw up too badly and came in third.
Orienteering race (middle) 43:05 [4] *** 3.9 km (11:03 / km) +110m 9:41 / km
spiked:6/10c shoes: VJ pro I
Advanced course at hale reservation. Ran pretty cleanly and came in 4th overall. These distances are a bit shorter than the ones that were advertised, I'm not sure why, but they're what I measured.

Turns out printed scale was actually 1:10638, not 1:10000. Distances are corrected now. -5/16/05

Probably shouldn't have, but a few bexley people were playing right beside the track, so I joined them for a little while.

Thursday May 12

running (track) 35:39 [2] 6.4 km (5:34 / km)
slept:0.0 shoes: asics GT-2090
Feel pretty crappy in general, probably due in part to having spent last night on my string theory term project rather than in bed, but also legs were tired from yesterday's park-o.

Wednesday May 11

Orienteering race (park-o) 23:13 [5] *** 2.48 km (9:22 / km) +105m 7:44 / km

Park-o at Peters Hill. A tricky (in my opinion) course by Pia Kivisakk, but lots of fun. Made some really bad mistakes, particuarly on #1 and #7. Probably 4 minutes of errors.

Physically, I felt pretty good, and I think I was moving pretty quickly, which may have contributed to my errors. Probably should have gone out a bit slower to get used to the map. Ankle was no problem.

Almost felt like a 3 intensity towards the end, even though I was slowing down. The ankle felt ok. It doesn't hurt, but I can tell it's weak.

NEOC meet at Breakheart Reservation. Cold, windy, raining. I don't know if that contributed to it, but lots of little mistakes were made.

I guess I lied about the ankle being ok. It still hurts a bit, particularly when I almost roll it again and again. I think I'll give it a day off tomorrow, a light day monday, another day off tuesday, park-o wednesday, and we'll see how it is then.

Wednesday May 4

running (track) 25:26 [2] 4.8 km (5:18 / km)
slept:8.0 shoes: asics GT-2090
Ankle is ~80% better. I went out a bit fast and didn't really slow down, so I was ~15sec/mi faster than E/L. Felt fine, though.

Tuesday May 3

running (track) 34:45 [2] 6.4 km (5:26 / km)
slept:7.5 shoes: asics GT-2090
A beautiful but windy day. Took the first and last 1600 10-15 sec faster than the middle two.

Left ankle is feeling better. I'm not quite sure what's wrong with it, but it feels like I almost rolled it (which I did, a couple of times). Anyway, it felt better when I got up this morning and didn't hurt while running.

West Point day 2 Red Y. A fun course. I navigated cleanly, with only some very minor mistakes that I corrected for quickly. Some bad route choice, and the uphills killed me, but I was pleased with my time.
