| Brisk jog over to Tufts and back. Wore tights even though it's not too cold. Took along a 1:10 pawtuckaway map which I got about 3.5k through before arriving back home. Had more concentration than I was expecting to, but still made some mistakes. | ||

| First 12 controls of the Blue course at NEOC's Hale reservation event. It was nice of Jeff to set a blue at a local meet, and I felt bad about not finishing it for him, but I stopped at 1:20 for a variety of reaons. Definitely out of shape from not running. | ||

| My quad actually feels really good today, despite playing soccer yesterday. Maybe dropping a few of the stretches I was doing over the summer was the right thing to do. | ||

| To/from soccer. There was a 3, for ~11min, then back was more like a 2 and a lot slower. | ||

| I was at MIT on saturday and was talking to some guys on the bexley team who requested my presence, so I reneged on my previous sentiment and played in the IM game tonight. Tie, 1-1. Quad feels better, but a little sore afterwards. | ||

| The swimming facilities at Harvard are rather inferior to those at MIT, mostly because of crap hours, but also things like tonight, where the recreational swimmers were relegated to the 5ft section of the pool. I guess I could have done some actual running on the pool floor, but I opted to swim instead, which I suck at, hence the high intensity. Arches are really tight, I think because my everyday shoes are too small. | ||

| Various parts feel better than they've felt for the past week or two, but calves are wicked sore (in a good way) and arches are semi-problematic. | ||

| I was having a great race until I arrived at #6 and it wasn't there. I attacked from the south side of the big boulder and had to reattack from the north side to find the control. Apparently it was quite visible to people coming straight on from the north. Maybe I'm wrong about the placement, I don't know, but I lost 4 minutes in the circle. Damn!
After that I started to wear out and make bad decisions and bad executions. I think I ran all the way around the pit at #13 before finding it. I couldn't find a trail on the long leg and opted out of my original route instead of sticking with it. Then I spent too long worrying about a trail I hadn't seen going into #19 when really I knew where I was without the trail anyway. Lots of fatigue problems. Overall, my map reading was fine, except my fine navigation within the circle (which gave me problems in spots other than #6), but my route choice, willpower, and physical and mental stamina were lacking. Even so, I couldn't have posted this result a year or two ago. Need to get new O shoes.

| Overshot #3 by a little bit, almost went to #4 instead of #10, but that was quite minor, it seems, and then paused in the depression just SE of #14. Otherwise fairly clean, but after blowing #3, which it turns out wasn't as bad as I thought, I figured I'd pretty much blown the race. I certainly didn't feel like it had been a great race when I got back.
As it turned out, everyone else apparently had bigger problems than I did, and in retrospect I had a better run than I was thinking at the time. It actually was quite similar to a lot of local races I've run recently, and my performance was quite similar to those, though I was pushing a bit harder this time, I think. Was able to stay straight and true to my bearing, which I think was key. I slowed down a lot to make sure I was in the right place, and it worked out well. This is probably my best result yet (place-wise and also performance-wise) in a big race, although bubba goat and the classic in the intercollegiates were good results, too. I think I need to work on faster map reading and foot speed, which were the limiting factors for me today.

| One particularly bad route choice, one instance of inadequate map reading in the control circle, and one mispunch were my 3 non-spiked controls. Overall lack of speed, but that's no surprise (this felt like a tempo run, and I just don't know how to run faster yet). Something I should work on once I figure out what's wrong with my leg and get back into training. | ||

| This really wasn't worth it. I got to the game a couple minutes late, subbed in halfway through the first half, and was subbed out halfway through the second. I think I won't bother playing IM games with Bexley if it's going to be like that. | ||

| swimming/DWR 20:00 [2] | ||
| Really sore from yesterday, so I wanted to do something low-impact just to stay loose. Quad feels ok, maybe a little less sore than it has been. It generally hurts for an hour or so after running, then feels much better (better than if I hadn't done anything) in the evening. | ||
