| Run with Kazza - she usually doesn't agree to a run with me, but my request for a short, easy run this afternoon, prior to lil nic's 'sleepover' mates arriving, was granted. Big problem - how does Kazza define 'easy'? - she's an absolute bloody maniac. Thank goodness we agreed on a definition for 'short'.
NOTE: found out to-day that the 10km last Saturday, which I thought was more like 9.6km, was in fact advertised as 9.2km on the results board displayed before to-days relays - talk about a brutal and deflating reality check!!! |

| Slow but steady longer run on a magnificent Ashtonfield morning. Kept myself honest up the frequently encountered long / gradual climbs. Wish we had more forest trails for this sort of run in our neck of the woods - hard to escape the bitumen for anything other than short periods of time. |

| First time I have run on the 'Wallaroo' map, another great map from Dennis. Heard club coach Geoff Todkill talking about 'traffic light' O'ing at the orange to red coaching day yesterday. Yesterday arvo, after X-Country, Joshwa told me he reckons I'm running strongly at the moment. So to-day I really tried to do more in terms of speed on the 'green' part of my route choice. Might have been beneficial, though probably negated too often by some pretty slow
navigation around the control circle and slow exit direction decisions - but sadly I have grown to expect that. Great area, really enjoyed David Kitchener's course, and very pleased with my effort overall. Over 100 entries again to-day - perhaps the momentum generated on National 'O' day has continued. |

| This race was advertised as 10km - it most definitely was not, or I have reversed the tyranny of getting older by some 19 years. During my warm down I overheard a lot of conversation about the distance. Many runners with the GPS style watches seemed to be agreeing that it was more like a 9.6km course - 2.4 km out / return / then repeat. So the distance is a bit of an informed guess. Very happy with my splits though - 9:50, 9:50, 10:03, 9:30 - irrespective of the distance. Quicker in the second half left a smile on the face that's for sure. |

| Very cautious / very slow - jogging, running patterns, stretching - left calf felt a bit dodgy in the last 2.4 km of the race. Will apply ice a couple of times this arvo / tonight - local club Orienteering event tomorrow which I would like to have a go at. |

| Thank you to 'Ophir Diggings' for returning some enjoyment and dignity to what was threatening to be a totally humiliating weekend. Thought I ran quite strongly, and worked hard at map orientation and rough compass direction. Got a bit sloppy 11 to 15, in the intricate gold mining detail - short legs/direction change, and wished I had pushed a bit harder physically 15 to finish. Great area for an Orienteer of my limited abilities - a real "bring me back next weekend" experience (and I really needed that). Interesting note: overheard many conversations around the results board in which people described how they went underground from what was 215 to 217 on my course. Apparently, if you looked in the right direction after punching 215 you could see another control in what was clearly "the light at the end of the tunnel" - saved anywhere from 30 secs to 1 minute it seems - not bad on what was a straight line distance of no more than 50 metres. Exciting stuff!! |

| If I could just view the glass as half full I would say to myself that I did a pretty reasonable job in a demanding area on 16 controls, and that I should take heart from that. But the glass is half empty got me during whatever it was that I was trying to do to-day. The perfect combination - no ability, deteriorating eyes, rain (wet glasses), and no sunlight for reading - if only I could accept that I am not improving, abandon that absurd prospect, and stop ruining physical activity by putting a map in my hand. Experienced a lot of crushing feelings at times to-day. 'Kahli's Rocks' 3, me 1. This map has an impressive destruction rate of 75%!! |

| Great afternoon around Ashtonfield, but I never really felt comfortable. Left knee and right calf not happy, but I persevered and got the job done - though very slowly at times!! Really looking forward to the challenge of SL 6 / 7 in Orange this weekend - just hope the body is too. Good luck to those competing in the WOC trials / NOL events down in Tassie this weekend. |

| Newcastle Cross Country event at Walka Water Works ( billed as the 'Millington Championships'! ). The opportunity for golf was long gone, and given this is such a handy venue for Maitland residents, decided to try a second consecutive cross country event - as things turned out, I was so glad I did. During warm up decided to aim for 54 minutes. 12km to-day / 10km last weekend. Grass trails, gravel, little bit of bitumen to-day / Redhead Beach last weekend. Couple of nuisance climbs to-day / flat at Redhead. 3 laps of a 4 km loop - 17:26, 17:39, 17:44 - calves were screaming at the end - hope I don't pay for it too much over the next few days! |

| Dropped Joshwa near Broadmeadow Race Course for more 'pain by Hans'. Ran from here onto the 'Merewether' Street 'O' map and visited some control sites from an event held in the 2006/07 series ( I think!). Lots of traffic at times, and plenty of dogs walking their owners to avoid, but the Merewether - Bar Beach stretch of coastal scenery towards the end of the run made it all worth while. A nice atmosphere about this area of Newcastle. |

| At 'Brush Creek'. Great mapping, setting and organisation from Dennis yet again. It has been a long time since I broke 10min/km at a local club event, so feel quite satisfied. Managed to ignore the myriad of tracks and concentrate on the contours for most of the course. Four short/sharp legs with directional changes at the end of the course cost me 2-3 minutes - need to stick to my plan for a full course, and respect the challenge of each leg, irrespective of distance and how 'easy' it might look. National Orienteering Day to-day - the club went through over 130 maps - a real positive for our sport in the Hunter. Hope we see a few back again. |

| Newcastle Cross Country race at Redhead Beach. 2.5 km south, 2.5 km north, then repeat! Put up with very wet socks/shoes, or put up with very soft sand. Opted for the former - many ran in bare feet, which in hindsight might have been an interesting choice. Don't do much of this any more - had nothing to offer in the final 2.5 km - very glad to see the finish. Enjoyed watching the battle up in front between Steveo and a 'female assassin' - boy she was clinical ,cold and brutal in the last 2.5km! |
