Orienteering 42:00 [2] ***
'The Range', 1: 10000 map. Club minor event. Shadowed a prospective junior squad member around the short orange course. On reflection, I certainly haven't had a heavy weekend of training that's for sure.

Saturday Aug 30

Orienteering 30:00 [2] ****
'the Chimney' / 1: 10000. Placing controls for todays NSW junior squad training exercises. Coach Darvo set a series of short courses in the intricate watercourse / erosion gully detail, control descriptions but no codes provided, with decoy controls on similar nearby features. This was followed by a compass only course - running a bearing needs work for many. Then some bush running technique / "straight and smooth" was the message for the kids. A really enjoyable and productive day - thanks Darvo.
Orienteering 15:00 [2] ****
Collecting controls after todays training exercises. Plenty of assistance today from parents, so not a lot of work to do as far as control collection is concerned - or placing controls for that matter.
Note
Got home in time to watch the final quarter of the Cats versus Eagles. One side winning by almost 100 points, Eagles couldn't get a possession, Geelong did stuff all with the ball at times other than keepings off. OK - I only saw one quarter, but what a shocking advertisement for AFL 2008!! Finished up watching Randwick versus Easts Union game on the ABC. Is it possible that the Cats are bad for football?

Street Orienteering long 1:23:19 [4] *
Ran around Kazza's street 'O' course from 2005, then added a little bit more to get the time up to 80 mins. Felt good today and worked hard, though the legs, and particularly the knees, had well and truly had enough by the time I got home.

Warm Up/Warm Down warm up/down (warm down) 18:00 [1]
Jogging, resistance work and stretching.

Sunday Aug 24

Warm Up/Warm Down warm up/down (warm up) 8:00 [2]
Again found it hard to do a sound warm up - plenty of Carbines shop gear to set up again to-day. A couple of bouts of jogging.
Orienteering race 1:02:56 [5] *** 8 km (7:52 / km) +255m 6:47 / km

NSW SL 12 / 'Arthursleigh' / 1:15 000. Very pleasing effort. Read the contours well, and thought I simplified well also. Got a bit tired towards the end, which was frustrating because my map contact was good, but couldn't make the most of it. Great weather / terrific area - just like a par on the 18th after 21 miserable stableford points, this was the sort of day that brings you back to the next 'O' event!!

Event: NSW Middle Distance Champs

Warm Up/Warm Down warm up/down (warm up) 10:00 [2]
A little haphazard in amongst setting up the Carbines shop, but tried to make time for a couple of jogging efforts.
Orienteering race 1:01:32 [4] **** 4.6 km (13:23 / km) +95m 12:07 / km

NSW Middle Distance Champs / 'Baronga Creek' / 1:10 000. The technical challenge and physically tough vegetation (at times) caught me by surprise. By my standards had 15 good legs. Not surprisingly though, when I stuffed a control, I did a good job of it in this type of terrain. 3 big chunks of time were lost, and I finished up way down the list of finishers. Plenty to be happy about though.
Warm Up/Warm Down warm up/down (warm down) 5:00 [1]
Slow jog back to the car - pretty ordinary effort given there is another run tomorrow.

Friday Aug 22

Running 29:57 [3]
Short run around Ashtonfield.
Warm Up/Warm Down warm up/down (warm down) 15:00 [1]
Extended jog and stretching.

Wednesday Aug 20

Running tempo 1:10:51 [4]
Longer run around Ashtonfield on a pleasant afternoon.
Warm Up/Warm Down warm up/down (warm down) 15:00 [1]
Jog, resistance work, stretch. (I think Angus has his 'habit' under control!)

Sunday Aug 17

Orienteering (Course Setting) 1:30:44 [3] ***
Out at 'Rural Acres' - finalising placement of controls for todays club event. Magnificent weather.
Orienteering (Course Setting) 1:08:35 [2] ***
Collecting controls. About 60 starters - not too bad, but on a great day on such a different style of Newcastle map can't help but think that an hours drive to Singleton is a problem for many. Think the courses were well received - regret leaving control 2 on the green course - nearly took it out last night - feedback suggests it was not a good control. Ah well - you live and learn. Very enjoyable, but very long day.

Saturday Aug 16

Orienteering (Course Setting) 2:05:00 [2]
Out at 'Rural Acres' this afternoon, placing controls, streamer trails and the like - my minor event is on tomorrow. Great place to be course setting. Weather forecast looks OK - I hope the club gets a reasonable turn out. It's a bit further to travel (Singleton) than normal!

Friday Aug 15

Running 1:18:10 [3]
Longer run around Ashtonfield on a magic afternoon. Body coped well. Great way to finish what has been a very tough week at the 'factory'.

Warm Up/Warm Down warm up/down (warm down) 10:00 [1]
Jogging outside, then stretching inside, watching the Olympics, and thinking what a significant departure from the norm the uniforms of the Brazilian womens Basketball team are.

Wednesday Aug 13

Running 32:13 [3]
First tentative efforts to iron out the last of the soreness and stiffness from Sunday. Not real successful in that regard, but really enjoyed lil nic's company on my usual shorter run around Ashtonfield.
Warm Up/Warm Down warm up/down (warm down) 10:00 [1]
Slow jogging and stretching with lil nic. Nice afternoon / great company.

Sunday Aug 10

Event: City to Surf

Running race 1:01:35 [5] 14 km (4:24 / km) vdot: 47.1
'City 2 Surf'. Really thrilled with my effort today. Along with lil nic and joshwa I was able to come up with a PB. Calf felt 'iffy' for a while early, but I just felt stronger and more confident as the run progressed. Can't explain it, but immensely happy. Might even get a few less seconds yet as this was my stop watch time, and I started it on the gun, and not when the 'magic timing chip initiating line' was crossed.

PS Official results are in - I picked up another 35 seconds thanks to the 'magic timing chip'. Gotta love technology!!

Friday Aug 8

Running tempo 46:19 [4]
I needed to convince myself that I could give the 'City 2 Surf' a go this Sunday - even skipped 'the Boss's Shout' over at 'the Terrace'!! 6 weeks ago I was sure I would run a PB this Sunday - this will not be the case now, but I will be at the start line, and I will have a red hot go - we have entered the 'family of four category', and I am fearful of being the weakest link!!
C • Maybe 2
Warm Up/Warm Down warm up/down (warm down) 10:00 [1]
Jog and stretch - tried to keep Angus company in the process. Not convinced the recent surgical procedure has completely eliminated his undesireable personal tendency!!!

Wednesday Aug 6

Running 32:06 [3]
First road run in almost three weeks. Took the safe option of a short run around Ashtonfield. Very pleased with the outcome.
C • Intensity! 20
Warm Up/Warm Down warm up/down (warm down) 12:00 [1]
Jogging, resistance work, stretching.

Sunday Aug 3

Warm Up/Warm Down warm up/down (warm up) 10:00 [2]
Some tentative jogging trying to convince myself the calf was up to a run, rather than walk around a course to-day. Decided to give a run a go, but opted for medium red - 4.5km rather than 6.1km long red, just to be on the safe side.
Orienteering race 59:06 [3] *** 4.5 km (13:08 / km) +90m 11:56 / km
spiked:9/12c
'Little Burkes Creek / 1:10 000'. Plenty to be positive about - the calf muscle survived, and I did very little walking - just not all the quick with the running speed either I guess. Should be happy with that, and I am, but lost about 8 minutes combined on my two really poor controls, both in classic Hunter Valley watercourse related scrub - thick, low visibility, which always seems to sort me out. Over 120 entries today - close to Newcastle and superb weather seems to be a common characteristic of the really well attended events the club has run this year

Saturday Aug 2

Orienteering (Course Setting) 1:53:13 [1] ***
Back out to 'Rural Acres' this morning. Very strong and cold wind to deal with. Finished checking control sites and doing map corrections. Calf felt good - but given I was walking, it would have been shattering to have a problem. Think I will try and run at tomorrow's Newcastle OY event!
