Warm Up/Warm Down warm up/down (warm up) 12:00 [2]
Jogging, running patterns, stretching before to-days Newcastle Cross Country event at Rathmines. Magnificent afternoon by the lake.
Running race 39:13 [5] 9.2 km (4:16 / km) vdot: 50.5
This race was advertised as 10km - it most definitely was not, or I have reversed the tyranny of getting older by some 19 years. During my warm down I overheard a lot of conversation about the distance. Many runners with the GPS style watches seemed to be agreeing that it was more like a 9.6km course - 2.4 km out / return / then repeat. So the distance is a bit of an informed guess. Very happy with my splits though - 9:50, 9:50, 10:03, 9:30 - irrespective of the distance. Quicker in the second half left a smile on the face that's for sure.
Warm Up/Warm Down warm up/down (warm down) 15:00 [1]
Very cautious / very slow - jogging, running patterns, stretching - left calf felt a bit dodgy in the last 2.4 km of the race. Will apply ice a couple of times this arvo / tonight - local club Orienteering event tomorrow which I would like to have a go at.

Friday May 23

Running 31:49 [3]
Haven't felt great all week - throat and chest infection. Decided to-day that it was time to get going again. Usual short run around Ashtonfield.

Orienteering race 1:12:13 [4] **** 7.1 km (10:10 / km) +340m 8:12 / km
spiked:11/17c
Thank you to 'Ophir Diggings' for returning some enjoyment and dignity to what was threatening to be a totally humiliating weekend. Thought I ran quite strongly, and worked hard at map orientation and rough compass direction. Got a bit sloppy 11 to 15, in the intricate gold mining detail - short legs/direction change, and wished I had pushed a bit harder physically 15 to finish. Great area for an Orienteer of my limited abilities - a real "bring me back next weekend" experience (and I really needed that). Interesting note: overheard many conversations around the results board in which people described how they went underground from what was 215 to 217 on my course. Apparently, if you looked in the right direction after punching 215 you could see another control in what was clearly "the light at the end of the tunnel" - saved anywhere from 30 secs to 1 minute it seems - not bad on what was a straight line distance of no more than 50 metres. Exciting stuff!!
