Event: 2008 Australian Championships

Bush Orienteering race (Aust Middle Distance Cham) 40:00 [3] 3.3 km (12:07 / km)
3rd Place, but a run with errors.

Wednesday Sep 17

Note
No time for training . Very busy at work, and organising lessons for next week - it's more work to be away than it is to actually be there and teach!! Went searching for some NSW blue goodies after work. Still not feeling as organised as I'd like to be. I know I'll get there. ANOTHER week of midnight-to-bed evenings.

Event: NSW Long Championships

Bush Orienteering race (NSW Long Champs) 3:00:00 [3] 5.8 km (31:02 / km)
Well for everyone who left before I returned, I did get back safely. I think organisers in the future will think twice before giving Karen Blatchford a late start. I've only ever had a dnf when I've injured my ankle badly or had a mispunch, so there was no way I was giving up today. I navigated OK to the first four controls, and was absolutely loving it. I wasn't moving quickly, but was keeping really good map contact. Then came my problem. I was too low and went too far on route to No. 5. I finally found it, but was quite disappointed and rushed off doing a 180. Stupid. Realised I was heading downhill, and turned around, but didn't keep good map contact. Control 6 took in total 50 minutes to find. Once I'd lost map contact I found it very difficult to relocate with such low visibility and rock everywhere in the green. I was in the right area all the time, but just unsure of my exact location. Considered giving up, but battled on. Eventually found it, and then proceeded to complete the rest of the course. Still made some errors and had lost quite a bit of confidence by this time. Was moving completely different to what I was at the start of the course. At times I felt like I was just bushwalking on a very very wet day; getting excited when I saw something orange!!. I was out there long enough to experience fog, three thunderstorms, rain, and wave to people as they left the event while I was running along the road in the direction of the finish. Despite such a horrific result, I still really enjoyed the map and would love to run there again. I think I'd love to practice orienteering there. Would be so good for me....................OK, just told Josh my km rate; his comment "I can swim faster than that Mum!!"
