Added some single-leg squats to the usual pushup routine. Need to strengthen leg stability muscles. Probably why I had knee issues earlier this year and the cycling has just increased the imbalance methinks.

It only took 3 months, but we finally went for a run! Or a run/walk at least :) From Split, over the hill on gravel roads to Kasuni Beach and back along the beach path. Nice run with good views, but everything is tight in all the wrong places. We should have more energy & time to gradually get into this running habit again over the next few weeks :)

Beautiful riding along the coast today - more like the typical postcard Croatia we were expecting. Traffic got quite busy on our way into Split, but we had a good lunch stop in the tiny island old city of Trogir. More traffic into Split and now we're here for the next 5 days or so.

Zadar to Jesonovo. All the rest must be doing us well as these coastal days are just flying by. We were on a fairly busy road for most of the day, but went past some scenic beaches and islands. Weather was perfect as well. The town of Sibenik surprised us with a really well-preserved old town and cathedral. Campsite has been great - right on the beach. Cycling to Split tomorrow and then another 5 days off visiting islands while waiting for Fran's sister, Jo, to join us.

Nice chilled day today. Cycled out the remaining length of Pag Island and then crossed back to the mainland on the bridge. Easy undulating cruising to Zadar from there. Taking 2 days off here including a day at the Plitvice Lakes tomorrow.

Woke up to blasting wind and it took some effort to get out of our lazy stupour and onto the bikes. Turned out to be a brilliant day. Not your typical postcard Croatia scenes (it was overcast), but a wild landscape which felt very different to the terrain we have traversed so far. The biggest contrast was when we crossed over to Pag Island using a short ferry and went from lush green mountain slopes to dry rocky bleakness in 10 mins. I really loved the sparseness of Pag. We are now camping at a very resorty campsite on the beach, feeling a million miles away from the challenges of the mountains! Short day to Zadar tomorrow, where we're spending 3 nights, including a bus trip to Plitvice Lakes.

In the spirit of our newly-found chill, we slept in, took our time having breakfast and only got going at 10am. Just 10km later, we stopped for an hour in Rijeka for well-deserved coffees and burek :) We had slightly more momentum in the afternoon, but the traffic got really bad. Couldn't really admire the view due to the concentration required. Road got quieter later on - hopefully it stays that way. Camping at a really simple campsite right on the Adriatic. We've decided to take a rest day here. Because we can :)

Had a chilled morning and cycled the 3km back to the Skocjan Caves, where we took a 2h tour of the underground canyon (impressive!). So only really got going at 1pm, but the road was kind to us and the trees sheltered us from the strong headwind. Border formalities into Croatia were a breeze and then it was a downhill 18km to our campsite at the beach. First time we have been at the sea properly since Spain! And now we get to apply the brakes and turn on the chill - due to the Schengen Visa rules, we have to spend a month in non-Schengen countries on this trip. Since we only have 1200km to cover during that month in Croatia, Montenegro and Albania, we have plenty rest days and island visits coming up :)

Woke up to gloomy skies but somehow avoided the rain all day - it seemed like it was always pouring just ahead of us. Had our last Italian coffees and crossed into Slovenia. Very lush and farmy :) We're camping just outside of the huge Skocjan Caves, which we'll visit properly in the morning.

Another day in the agricultural plains, so despite not getting an early start, we still piled on the kms. Staying in a very run down town called Palmanova, which was built as a Utopian city but nobody wanted to move here. Very strange... Slovenia tomorrow!

Got going nice and early for a long flat day. Nothing difficult all day, just dragged on a bit with all the canal tow paths and farm lands. Staying in Mestre for 3 nights, which is the mainland town near Venice. First days of rest in 2 weeks coming up! :)

Completely changed our planned route into Venice for the next two days. Decided we had done enough 1400m passes and took the longer but flatter bike path via Verona instead. Made it quite a chilled day, just quite hot. Verona is a great city - definitely need to come back.

Hit a moderate climb (700m) first thing but it was pretty steep with many 10% sections. Great downhill, pizza for lunch, short bop over a 400m climb (incl waterfall swim) and then the most spectacular cliff-top MTB singletrack above Lago di Garda, with tunnels and all. Just wow. Beautiful sunset on the lake that evening

Pretty simple day really: descend 1000m to Lovere on a lake and then climb over a beastly pass which I had never heard of, the Colle di San Zeno, a 1220m climb over 16km. Great descent on the other side after well-earned beers at the col restaurant.

Shortened day due to extended rain storms in the afternoon. Went over two passes and started realising that the unnamed Italian climbs can rival the famous Alpine cols for difficulty. First got roasted by the sun and then poured on. Great views either way ;)

Brilliant day riding along the shores of Lake Como via Belaggio to Lecco. Charne has joined us for the stretch to Venice so it was a good start for her until the last part of the day out of Lecco - 500m climb in the rain at 7pm. It's a good thing we have crazy friends...

Only need to be in Como to meet Charne tomorrow night so 2 easy days for us. Nothing too noteworthy today, just rolling hills, mostly downhill and hot, humid weather. Camped on the shore of Lago Maggiore.

Got an early start and found a cafe for coffees and pastries straight away. Then we had a tortuous climb up to Andrate. None of this consistently graded alpine stuff. Nope, this one was 15% gradients followed by flats or even downhills and them back up to 15% on repeat. The kind of climb Pantani loved apparently. Awesome narrow contouring road to reach the Santuario di Oropa, followed by a steep climb up to a tunnel and a steeper descent into the valley. Finally, a 600m climb past the Bielmonte ski station and then down to Castagnea, where we're spending the night at a farm stay. Loads of climbing - pity the views were so hazy.

Good luck for EA everyone!

Beautiful day to start, but got hot and windy later on. Spent the whole day "descending" the Aosta valley, but plenty of small steep hills either side of the river. Back into the mountains tomorrow, Como on Saturday.

It rained overnight and was still raining in the morning. Turns out our 10-year old tent is not that waterproof anymore! And there were slugs everywhere... Packed everything wet and set off for the nearest Boulangerie in Bourg St Maurice. Fortunately the weather started clearing after breakfast and we had a glorious sunny ride up the Col du Petit Saint Bernard to the Italian border. We were even able to dry all our stuff out on some picnic tables while we had our lunch two-thirds of the way up. The climb was long (28km) but easy (4-5% gradient) and soon we were bombing down into the Aosta Valley in Italy. Camping (slugless) in Arvier tonight.

Col de la Madeleine today. What a monster... 1500m climb over 19km, with a relentlessly consistent gradient. Took us 3h to cycle up including a 30min coffee break halfway. Not as scenic as the Galibier, but still well worth doing. The AG2R team were out training on the pass and naturally they were caning it past us. At least they were kind enough to shout out some "Allez!" of encouragement on their way down ;) Yet another awesome downhill (1500m over 27km) and then 30km up the valley to a campsite right next to the bike path, about 6km before Bourg St Maurice. Italy tomorrow!
