Mountain Biking 7:40:30 [3] 112.4 km (14.6 kph) +2130m
shoes: Merida Big Nine TFS 500

And then the big days started! Nice ride down the steep side of the pass in the morning mist and then some rolling terrain towards Elliot. To get to the main event (Bastervoetpad), we had to ride up the tar Barkly Pass, a 600m climb at a relatively gentle gradient. But the headwind pumping down the pass had other ideas and all of us burnt a few matches on this one...

Some cokes from the Mountain Shadows Hotel revived us and we pushed on into the windy, overcast afternoon, up towards Bastervoetpad. It was a wild and technical pass, with rutted & rocky dual track, requiring plenty of concentration to stay on our bikes. But it really got us into the mountains so well worth the effort. Still not quite sure how Alex survived on his gravel steel frame bike with rigid fork and 1:1 gearing!

Janneke's Dad met us at one of the river crossings with cokes & beers (what a legend!) which fuelled the last 15km of fast forest roads to their farm near Ugie. We pulled into their driveway as it got dark.

Drove down to Barkly East for a proper 4-day MTB tour in Wartrail country with Alex, Kev, Oli & Melch. We started riding in the early afternoon after the drive from Joburg & CT and were planning on finding a spot to wild camp for the night.

This was a great way to warm-up to it with an easyish 50km ride through farmlands and eventually up the Otto du Plessis pass. Found a good spot to camp close to water just over the other side about 20 mins before dark :)
