Lazy morning, taking the walk to Die Hel, which was waaay more impressive than I had expected. Must be at least a 50m x 30m mountain pool, fed by a waterfall, with towering cliffs all around. Would have loved to spend the entire day there!

But we had other fish to fry - back up to the hut, backpacks on again, and onwards to the Groot Kliphuis campsite for Fran & me (Jo & Steve had to head back a day early). We hiked into the campsite at sunset and had that beautiful spot all to ourselves. One of those vast wild spaces that I imagine the wilderness areas in the US to be like. Just perfect for a last evening in the mountains.

Hiking 7:46:56 [2] 17.5 km (2.2 kph) +1746m

Groot Winterhoek summit day! Completely off trail all day and a monster ascent up to one of the prime peaks in the Western Cape (it seems to be visible from everywhere). Got some good route beta from some others who had been recently and had a perfect day for it - just had to enjoy the full day out - more like 12 hours door-to-door.

Initially quite a slog up a few big fynbos slopes, then some fun Cederberg-like vlaktes and boulder fields, finishing off with a spectacular summit ridge and some airy scrambles. Made it down, feeling pretty worn out, just before dark :)

4-day hike in the Groot Winterhoek Reserve with Fran, Jo & Stephen. Have been meaning to come hiking here for close to 20 years, so good to finally make it happen!

First day was an easy stroll down the river valley to Disa Hut, with overcast skies and a few drops of rain here and there. Gorgeous sunset after an afternoon snooze ;)

Climbing 45:00 [4] +60m

Wasn't planning on trying to squeeze a mid-week Hole session in, but got an invite, so saw it as a sign ;) Still no send though - aargh. Same high point on the 27 as Sunday on my 2nd proper go. Linked to the top from 1st crux though... sooo close!
