orienteering race 1:39:00 [5] 5.89 km (16:48 / km)

Day 6. same area as previous day, and same kind of course ie middle distance. struggled early on at number 2, bit then did OK until one of the later controls. generally played it safer than yesterday, taking longer routes in order to use more reliable attack points. Improved immensely on previous day's time, whereas others continued to struggle or did worse.

walk warm up/down 13:00 [2] 1.3 km (10:00 / km)

walk to day 6 start, not including bigger and steeper walk to assembly area

orienteering race 2:04:00 [4] 6.45 km (19:13 / km)

Day 5. Middle distance, but not middle time. This was the most technical course I have done, dense forest, totally unrunnable rocky terrain. i set off with the good concentration that i knew would be required, and did well for the first half of the course, but then made a mess of four of the last controls, taking over an hour to do just four controls. Nil points as I was over the 2 hour time limit :-(

walk warm up/down 19:50 [2] 1.6 km (12:24 / km)

Day 5 walk to start.

walk warm up/down 25:00 [2] 1.3 km (19:14 / km)

walk to the start for Day 4, the highest of the week at over 2000m. spectacular views and alpine flowers.

orienteering 2:20:00 [5] 11.9 km (11:46 / km)

Day 4. A downhill course from over 2000m start, but still plenty of climb too. nightmare at number 7, otherwise not too bad. really tricky underfoot as it has been all week, wary of twisting ankle or falling down unmarked pits every step of the way. very hot so was glad to have an early start for this one. highlight of the week for the scenery, weather and orienteering all coming together.

walk warm up/down 1:30:00 [4] 4.6 km (19:34 / km) +700m 11:07 / km

Extreme warm up for Day 3 to the top of Glatalp.

orienteering race 1:13:28 [4] 5.92 km (12:25 / km)

Day 3 on Glatalp. Weather now better. Race at height of 1900m; spectacular. But, with climb to top, and needing to get down again, and back of right knee hurting from day before, I never intended to complete the course, just took one control at a time and ended up missing a loop of 4 controls on the limestone pavement towards the end of the course. really enjoyed the run; kept stopping to take pics. knee no worse than yesterday.

running warm up/down 45:00 [3] 4.6 km (9:47 / km)

extreme warm down. 700m descent over 4.6k

orienteering race 2:12:56 [4] 8.79 km (15:07 / km)

SOW Day 2
Second day of rain. Had trouble reading the map and seeing where I was putting my feet (rain on glasses). Very muddy. Would have been a great view, but low cloud meant visibiility was very restricted for most of the race. messed up on one or two controls and slipped around for the rest.

Note: transport fiasco afterwards whereby army had been sent home at planned time despite scores of people still at the top of the mountain in the cold and rain - for two hours!!!

walk warm up/down 40:00 [4] 2.0 km (20:00 / km)

very steep climb to the start

Sunday Aug 2, 2009 #

orienteering race 22:49 [4] 3.54 km (6:27 / km)

SOW Day 1 (sprint)
Best result of the week 82/116. No mistakes, should've run faster. one poor route choice. the rain made it less fun than it might have been.

running warm up/down 15:00 [3]

warm up in the car park (thundery rain outside)
