Gym 35:00 [3]

Mostly leg stuff, balance, while Rhonda was on the treadmill.
8 AM

Hike 30:17 intensity: (14:07 @1) + (13:06 @2) + (2:12 @3) + (42 @4) + (10 @5) 1.31 mi (23:07 / mi) +41m 21:04 / mi
ahr:111 max:164 slept:7.0 weight:165lbs shoes: 2019 Blue Gel Kayanos

Dog loop with Rhonda, a little slippery in the snow. Not much more than a dusting, but slick on the leaves.
2 PM

Hike 40:44 intensity: (5:13 @1) + (21:29 @2) + (7:49 @3) + (3:55 @4) + (2:18 @5) 1.62 mi (25:09 / mi) +66m 22:20 / mi
ahr:128 max:199 shoes: 2019 Blue Gel Kayanos

Back out again, now with about 3" of snow, pretty moist and making clumps under my microspikes.

Gym (Plank) 4:00 [3]
slept:5.0 weight:165.6lbs

I’ve been thinking for a while about how long I could reasonably hold one. This was more a limit of will than a physical one, but the physical limit would not have been far behind.
8 AM

Gym (Yoga) 20:00 [3]

9 AM

Hike 1:28:32 intensity: (11 @0) + (5:51 @1) + (28:41 @2) + (46:52 @3) + (6:38 @4) + (19 @5) 4.68 mi (18:55 / mi) +110m 17:38 / mi
ahr:128 max:160 shoes: 2019 Blue Gel Kayanos

Some diminishing returns on these walks. L hamstring and R hip are really not liking them, and the irritation is probably more than whatever training value I am getting. Need to cut these back to shorter sessions.
1 PM

Gym 20:00 [3]

Various single leg exercises I picked up from Eric. Single leg stand ups, lunges with rear foot on bench, bird dips, one where I use a pull-up assist band around my upper leg, anchor it to the smith machine, kneel on the other leg and pull in different directions against the band. Good for relieving the impingement in my R hip.
3 PM

Note

Maybe an hour and a half pruning an apple and another crabapple. Plenty more pruning work available around here.

With Rhonda at the lake.

Jess and Jonathan came up last night, left this morning with Cooper. Their plan is to wait it all out in NYC at Jonathan's brother's place. Much bigger than theirs, close to the hospital for when the baby comes, Andrew is away indefinitely, so a pretty good location for sheltering in place.

Not a lot of free time with Cooper around. Reading books, watching movies, playing basketball, taking him down to ride his bike, playing chess, etc. also I was pleased that he got to see the bear stroll across the yard. That was pretty timely because the book that he likes to have read to him over and over is “We’re going on a bear hunt.” So we got to act the book out in the yard.

Also watching some opera, as the Metropolitan is offering free streaming of a different opera each day now that the opera is closed for the season. La Bohème 3 nights ago, then il Trovatore, La Traviata and tonight La Fille du Regiment. Very cool. Cooper was pretty pleased watching opera, too.

ahr:143 max:156 slept:6.0 weight:165.8lbs shoes: 2019 Blue Gel Kayanos

Went out to do hospital loop laps on a 5:15 clock. This was quite a disappointment, as my L hamstring was really sore. I thought running a bit might loosen it, but it got worse each lap, so pulled the plug after 3. Rolling and stretching don’t seem to be helping. This is now at 8 months and certainly no improvement.

Out early to drive to NYC and pick up young Cooper for a stay at grandmother’s house. Met up with Jonathan and Jess in front of their apartment, got the young man situated and his necessary toys in the back and headed right back home. Traffic not too bad going to the city these days. Arrived in NYC at 7:35, back on the road at 7:53. Not bad.

ahr:111 max:146 slept:7.0 weight:165.6lbs shoes: 2014 Mafate 2

Another outing with Tullio and Rhonda. Almost threw these Mafates out a while ago because I hadn't worn them in about 5 years, but glad I have them. I have been wearing them while my foot is recovering from the bruise I aggravated last week orienteering at Ansonia. They are nice and thick.

On the way back we saw our first bear of the season, crossing the road from our property to the other side. Really handsome fellow, well-nourished and glossy black. No ear tags. I was not alert enough to take his picture.

Hiking with Rhonda and Tullio at the lake

in the age of social distancing.

Ran into a guy with two young and friendly collies. Turned out he was pretty friendly, too. To the point where it was a bit difficult to extricate ourselves from the conversation. Kept him a good two meters away, though, although his dogs were a little closer.
2 PM

Gym (Yoga) 20:00 [3]

Outside on the grass
3 PM

Note

About an hour and a half of pruning. Today it was the pear tree and a crabapple, both seriously overgrown. Yesterday it was a couple of apple trees, a few days before blueberry bushes and lilacs. It's been several years since any of them have had much attention, but now that I'm (mostly) retired I can start keeping up with this stuff.

ahr:151 max:163 slept:8.0 weight:165.4lbs shoes: 2014 Mafate 2

At the lake, more or less with Rhonda. A few dog walkers out today.
HR seems right, generally in the 150s until the last push up the final hill, max 163. I have generally had more repeatable results from the optical HR monitoring on the FR235 than I ever had from a chest strap monitor. Not that it matters all that much to me.

Event: MOC Tour

4 PM

Gym (Yoga) 25:00 [3]

Followed by one round of 10 reps each side: Bird dips, side lunges, one leg standups from bench, lunges with rear toes on bench. This last one is a good one for me, since I can't do regular lunges very well with a R big toe that doesn't bend. Thought I was going to do three rounds of this, but dinnertime intervened, and then forgot about it.
